Jets vs. Bears score, takeaways: Mike White makes most of starting spot, throws three TDs in win over Chicago

On a rainy afternoon in North New Jersey, the New York Jets got back on track by defeating the Chicago Bears 31-10 in Week 12.

In a battle of backup quarterbacks, Mike White got the better of Trevor Siemian, and by a lot. White completed 22-of-28 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns. The first two scores each went to rookie wide receiver Garrett Wilson, giving him two more scores from White in this game than he had in seven games with Zach Wilson under center. White also found second-year receiver Elijah Moore for a touchdown, his first score since Week 13 of last season.

The Jets also got a lift from rookie running back Zonovan Knight, who played much more than expected after Michael Carter injured his ankle and James Robinson was a surprise inactive. White ran 14 times for 69 yards, and added three catches for 34 additional yards in the first NFL action of his career.

Siemian, who reportedly injured his oblique during pregame warmups and was rumored to not be starting, got off to a nice start to the game by completing 8-of-11 passes for 127 yards and a score prior to halftime. He couldn't get much going in the second half, though, and the Jets' defensive front repeatedly had him under siege. He finished just 6 of 14 for 52 yards and an interception in the second half.

Here are a few key takeaways from the Jets' win over the Bears.

Why the Jets won

Mike White played the best game any Jets quarterback has played this season, and perhaps in quite some time. He completed 22-of-28 passes for 315 yards and three touchdowns, and was not intercepted. That was good for a 149.3 passer rating, the best for any Jets quarterback since Geno Smith registered a perfect 158.3 rating back in 2014. White connected with 10 different receivers, and got both Garrett Wilson and Elijah Moore in the end zone. He calmly navigated the pocket and spread the ball around to the backs and tight ends, as well as the wideouts. He was in complete control of the game from the jump.

Why the Bears lost

Their defense was torn to pieces by Mike White, Garrett Wilson and the rest of the Jets offense. Also, their own offense lacked the ability to create any explosive plays without Justin Fields. Oh, and injuries. Eddie Jackson and Darnell Mooney each left the game with injuries. They were pretty much completely overmatched on both sides of the ball for most of the afternoon. David Montgomery did all he could to break a bunch of tackles and create yards on his own, but it wasn't nearly enough.

Turning point

With the Jets trailing 10-7 late in the second quarter, White dropped back to pass on first-and-10 from his own 46-yard line. After faking a handoff to rookie Zonovan Knight, White found Garrett Wilson streaking across the field on a crossing route. It looked like it would turn into a nice gain, but Bears safety Eddie Jackson collapsed to the ground due to an injury, and it gave Wilson the opportunity to cut back across the grain. When he did, there was a whole lot of room to run:

Wilson turned the play into a 54-yard touchdown, giving the Jets a lead they would never relinquish.

Highlight play

With the Jets nursing a three-score lead late in the game, Chicago had a chance to make things mildly interesting. C.J. Mosley took that chance away with a diving interception of Siemian, robbing Cole Kmet of a potential catch for a score.

The Jets simply ran the clock out from there.

What's next

The Jets improved here to 7-4, keeping pace with the surprisingly competitive AFC East. Next up is a trip to Minnesota to take on the Vikings, who bounced back on Thanksgiving to defeat the Patriots. Chicago drops to 3-9 after its fifth consecutive loss. The Bears host the division rival Green Bay Packers next week before taking a bye in Week 14. Fields should be able to play next week, given that he was a game-time decision for this contest, but the Bears could also elect to hold him out and let him rest for two more weeks before playing again, given that their chances of making the playoffs are pretty much non-existent at this point.

Corey Davis did a really nice job holding off Jaylon Johnson with his body on that third-down conversion. Gives the Jets a chance to turn this drive into some points.

Zonovan Knight now has four carries to Michael Carter's five. Pretty surprising distribution of snaps and touches in the backfield for the Jets, but Knight looks pretty good. New York has a nice RB room with those two and the injured Breece Hall.

Pretty nice punt return by Braxton Berrios, who was the First Team All-Pro return man last season. They say your job as the returner is to make the first guy miss and then depend on your blocking, and Berrios made the first guy miss right there.

Wilson's second touchdown of the day:

Mike White is 12-16 for 198 yards and two touchdowns already. (And it's Eddie Jackson who was hurt, looks like some sort of lower-leg injury.)

And then White delivers a strike to Wilson over the middle of the field... and a Bears defender falls down, giving Wilson a cutback lane for a huge play and a touchdown!

Nice job by White to step up through the pocket and avoid pressure, then flip the ball out to Ty Johnson in the flat.

What in the world was that third-down play? Did Siemian mis-handle the snap? Or was that supposed to be a sneak but he felt the center was covered? Whatever it was, it didn't work, and now the Bears will punt.

Seems as though Darrynton Evans has surpassed Tristan Ebner for the No. 2 RB job behind David Montgomery. (With Khalil Herbert on injured reserve.)

OK so it seems like this was ruled an incomplete pass and not a fumble by the holder. Which means the Bears get the ball. Hilarious play all around.

Bears picked up the fumble and then I believe Jaylon Johnson fumbled it right back to the Jets. At least I think that's what happened.

The Jets didn't even really try to pick up the third-down conversion, opting for a screen to Braxton Berrios. Then there's a bad snap on fourth down, followed by a fumble, followed by some absolutely craziness that LOOKS like it will end with the Jets actually getting the ball back.

White just led Wilson into a HUGE hit over the middle. Can't leave your receivers out to dry like that.

Much better throw on third down as White finds Elijah Moore up the seam for what turns into a 32-yard gain. Moore spun off a tackle at the catch point and his some YAC for a big gain.

VERY dangerous throw by Mike White intended for Garrett Wilson. Probably should have been picked by Eddie Jackson but the ball went through his hands. (And then Wilson's, also.)

Siemian is 7-9 for 120 yards and a touchdown. White is 7-9 for 75 yards and a touchdown. It's a shootout!

Byron Pringle, what a catch! Goes up over the top of DJ Reed for the touchdown. Incredible play.

Siemian looking for Claypool on a fade against Gardner again, and this time they connect for 31 yards. There's a flag, not sure if it's gonna be DPI or OPI.

Looked like Siemian audibled at the line to that third-down QB sneak. Saw the center was uncovered, tapped the top of his helmet and just sneaked it up the middle for a first down.

This time Siemian is able to connect with Claypool for a nice gain over the middle. Bears inching closer to Jets territory for the second time in two drives.

White had Corey Davis open for what should have been a first down, but Jaylon Johnson was able to get his hand in there and break up the pass. Bears will get the ball back.

Mike White is getting the ball out very quickly. Mostly underneath throws, which makes sense.

Siemian was looking for Chase Claypool on a goal line fade on third-and-goal but couldn't connect. Sauce Gardner in coverage, adding to his Defensive Rookie of the Year resume.

Darrynton Evans breaks a big play to get the Bears into the red zone. He was elevated from the practice squad for this game.

Siemian couldn't connect with Cole Kmet on second down, but found David Montgomery in the flat on third-and-4. Montgomery broke a tackle and gave the Bears a new set of downs.

Siemian gets the start. After the Bears had previously announced that Peterman would start because Siemian got injured during warmups. Weird stuff.

Garrett Wilson wide the heck open for a touchdown. Looked like a flag came in the area of potential offensive interference, but instead it's a hold on Kindle Vildor and the Jets decline. Mike White with a very successful opening drive.
