Cowboys vs. Lions score, takeaways: Dak Prescott victorious in return as Dallas sinks turnover-prone Detroit

It was a surprisingly low-scoring contest, but the Dallas Cowboys nevertheless secured their fifth victory of the season on Sunday, defeating the Detroit Lions 24-6.

Most of the talk leading up to the game was about the return of Dak Prescott, but the Dallas pass offense was somewhat quiet in this contest and it took until the final two minutes of the game before Prescott (19 of 25 for 207 yards) threw his first touchdown pass of the season. Instead, the Cowboys leaned on their defense and run game for most of the afternoon. Dallas actually trailed 6-3 at halftime, but scored three second-half touchdowns and did not allow the Lions to get into the end zone at all.

Detroit, which entered the game without D'Andre Swift, lost Amon-Ra St. Brown on its second drive of the game with a concussion. Without their top two offensive threats, the Lions actually still managed to move the ball fairly efficiently (5.6 yards per play), but they undermined themselves by committing five turnovers and taking five sacks. Those miscues were all Dallas needed to stage a comeback victory.

Here are a few more things to know about this game.

Why the Cowboys won

Timely turnovers, stingy defense and a strong run game. The Lions scored at least 24 points in each of their first four games of the season (and at least 35 in three of them) before being shut out by the Patriots in their fifth game. Dallas held Detroit to just six points in this one, with the aforementioned four turnovers and four sacks setting the tone for that performance. The Cowboys also got big games from both Ezekiel Elliott (two touchdowns on the ground) and Tony Pollard (109 total yards on 14 touches). Plus, Prescott was efficient (8.3 yards per attempt), if not necessarily explosive in his return from a broken thumb.

Why the Lions lost

Turnovers. That's about it. For much of the game, the Lions and Cowboys were essentially even in time of possession, yards per play, yards per run and yards per pass. But Detroit turned the ball over four times, and Dallas turned it over only once. Jared Goff was intercepted once each by Trevon Diggs and Jourdan Lewis, Jamaal Williams lost a fumble at the goal line when Detroit had a chance to take the lead, and with Detroit needing two desperation drives to stage a comeback, Goff was strip-sacked by Dallas rookie Sam Williams. Then, after Dallas made it a three-score game, Goff was strip-sacked by Micah Parsons.

Turning point

After Diggs picked off Goff early in the third quarter, Dallas ripped off a seven-play, 82-yard drive led by Elliott and Pollard. The two running backs combined for 64 yards on six carries, including Elliott's 1-yard plunge into the end zone to give the Cowboys their first lead of the game.

Highlight play

After taking a nasty looking hit to his knee toward the end of the first half, it looked like Zeke might have suffered a serious injury. Incredibly, he not only came back into the game, but looked better than he did before the injury. That included a ridiculous full-speed hurdle of a Lions defender to break off his biggest gain of the day.

What's next

The Cowboys are now 5-2 after playing the Lions and they will quickly finish up the NFC North portion of their schedule. They host the Chicago Bears next week, take their bye in Week 9, then visit the Packers in Week 10 and Vikings in Week 11. The Lions are 1-5 and will be in action for 11 consecutive weeks after taking their bye in Week 7. The next month features home games against the Dolphins and Packers followed by trips to Chicago and New York to take on the Bears and Giants, respectively.

And now Zeke goes into the end zone at the tail end of what was easily Dallas' best drive of the afternoon. Cowboys take their first lead of the day. Still cannot believe Zeke didn't suffer a serious injury and is out there making real runs.

Uh holy crap and then he just leapfrogged a defender at full speed! What the hell????

Zeke is back in there, somehow. Tried to get to the edge on the first carry but it got strung out.

Did Trevon Diggs get both hands underneath that ball? I think so. Another pick for one of the ball-hawkiest DBs in the league. Looked like he was the WR making the adjustment on that one.

So we head to halftime with the Lions holding a surprising 6-3 lead. They also get the ball for the first possession of the second half.

The ball is definitely out. What a play by rookie safety Kerby Joseph.

Noah Brown wide open on a slant and Dak hits him in stride... but he takes a huge hit and seems to fumble it on his way down. Lions recover. What a hit. Wow.

Here's the hit on Zeke. No idea how he didn't tear something here. Incredible ligament strength if he's actually all good.

Somehow Zeke is not even going to the medical tent? Very surprising. Seemed like the Cowboys doctors did the ACL stability test on the field and it checked out, so perhaps he just hyper-extended it or something.

Zeke looked like he just got hit right in the knee on an option carry to the right side. Bent WAY backward. Yikes.

Hutchinson must have been setting Smith up for the spin move because he just pulled out a great one and hit Dak as he was trying to throw down the field to Noah Brown, who was triple-covered.

Aidan Hutchinson is getting very far up the field on his pass rush vs. Tyler Smith. He had a sack earlier but he's gone past Dak a few times now.

Zeke's best run of the game so far on that first-down carry. Looked like he got tripped up from behind or he could have had more.

KeVontae Turpin with a nice return on the punt, just got tripped up before he was able to break it into a big gain.

Dallas has been managing Micah Parsons' snap load today and he does not look happy about it on the sideline. Might be connected to the groin issue he dealt with a couple weeks back. In any event, Goff goes down on a sack by Donovan Wilson, who came unblocked off the edge after seeing the play-action fake to Reynolds.

TE screen to undrafted rookie Peyton Hendershot doesn't get much but also gets a block in the back call on Noah Brown. And then Dak can't connect with CeeDee on second-and-long as he almost gets picked (should have been picked). Ugly stuff from the Dallas offense against what had been the worst defense in the league so far this year.

Cowboys still trying to establish Zeke on the ground. Still not working at all.

52-yard kick from Michael Badgley is good after some discussion about a penalty that was ultimately not called. 6-3 lead for the Lions.

Detroit's offensive line looks pretty good so far, clearing space against one of the NFL's best defensive fronts. And even though the Cowboys have a few good options against tight ends, Hockenson and Wright have four catches combined. But a penalty and then a failed screen have Detroit looking at either fourth-and-very-long or a long field goal attempt.

The Cowboys lined up to go for it on fourth-and-goal from the 2 ... but they chickened out and kicked a 20-yard field goal. Game is tied 3-3.

Tony Pollard much more involved on this Dallas drive as well, after not touching the ball on the first two possessions. Great play by Jeff Okudah to get Pollard on the ground before he was able to get in the end zone right there.

Schultz appears to be back to his full workload, and back in the game after that tweak of his knee on the earlier catch. He's a top short-yardage target for Dak.

Dallas finally getting something going offensively on this drive. Dak looking much more accurate with great touch on throws to Dalton Schultz and CeeDee Lamb.

Amon-Ra St. Brown is now headed to the locker room. Lions already short-handed on offense, so that's a big loss.

Pollard was THIS close to breaking that second-down run for a huge gain. He just tripped up by his ankles but he was about to be one on one with a safety and nobody else in the open field. Dallas picks up a first sown on the next snap.

Detroit gets on the board first with a short field goal. Dallas has gone three-and-out on both drives, needs to put something together on this ensuing possession.

St. Brown looks like he took a shot to the back of the head and is being removed from the game by the spotter to be evaluated for a concussion. Could be a huge loss for Detroit if he doesn't pass the protocol.

Fun design on the WR screen to Reynolds, with a tight end going in motion to that side and being used as a blocker. Lions set up just outside the red zone now.

Craig Reynolds is the secondary back for Detroit with Swift out. Nice job breaking a tackle to gain the first down.
