Cowboys vs. Eagles takeaways: Dallas evens score in NFC East race, blows out Philadelphia

The Dallas Cowboys certainly have the look of the best team in the division, even if they have a ways to go to wrap up the NFC East title. Dallas dominated Philadelphia from start to finish in a convincing 33-13 victory that displayed how much better the Cowboys are since they lost to the Eagles six weeks ago.

The Cowboys lead the NFC East via tiebreaker, even though them and the Eagles share the same record. Dallas holds the division lead based on having the best win percentage in division games, but Philadelphia will win the division if the Eagles win out (will hold the tiebreaker based on better conference record).

Dak Prescott threw for 271 yards and two touchdowns as Dallas scored on all four of its first-half possessions, including three touchdowns to build a 24-6 lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Cowboys never trailed in this one as Prescott and the offense put up a clean performance in rolling to the victory. CeeDee Lamb and Michael Gallup each had a receiving touchdown and Rico Dowdle added a rushing touchdown in the win.

The Cowboys put up nearly 400 yards of offense and went 9 of 16 on third down. Excluding kneel-downs, Dallas scored on seven of nine possessions as the final outcome was never in doubt. Brandon Aubrey kicked four field goals, including becoming the first kicker in NFL history to hit two field goals of 59-plus yards in a game.

Philadelphia failed to score an offensive touchdown and fumbled the ball three times, one from Jalen Hurts and the other two from A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. All three of the turnovers were in Cowboys territory. The Eagles' lone touchdown come via a forced fumble from Fletcher Cox that resulted in a scoop and score from Jalen Carter. The three turnovers were the most for the Eagles in a game since Week 6.

Hurts finished 18 of 27 for 197 yards and was held out of the end zone. The Eagles running backs had 18 carries for 77 yards while Brown and Smith combined for 14 catches for 167 yards -- yet had two fumbles and two crucial drops inside the 3-yard line that cost the Eagles potential touchdowns.

A recap of the game can be found in our live blog below as the Cowboys and Eagles both have the same record through 14 weeks. Here's how the Sunday night showdown unfolded with our takeaways.

Why the Cowboys won

The Cowboys were flat out dominant in all three phases of the game. The offense scored on seven of nine possessions and scored touchdowns on three of its first four possessions. The Cowboys didn't even need to score touchdowns in the second half because the game was well in hand. The defense didn't allow a touchdown and forced three fumbles. Brandon Aubrey hit four field goals, including two from 59-plus yards. They could have beat any team in the NFL with this performance.

Why the Eagles lost

Where do we start? Philadelphia scored more points on the defensive side of the ball than on offense, thanks to a scoop and score defensive touchdown from Jalen Carter. This same defense allowed 394 yards and 33 points. They also trailed 10-0 at the end of the first quarter, the fifth consecutive game the Eagles trailed by double digits at some point. The offense fumbled the ball three times in Dallas territory, adding to the frustration. The Eagles were outplayed and outcoached at all levels.

Turning point

Jalen Hurts' fumble on an 11-yard run that took the Eagles to the Cowboys 20-yard line on their opening possession in the first quarter. After Dallas scored on its opening drive to take a 7-0 lead, Philadelphia marched right down the field to get into Dallas territory. Hurts hit DeVonta Smith for a 30-yard gain two plays prior to the fumble, as the Eagles appeared to get points on the opening drive.

The fumble was the first in a series of miscues for the Eagles on offense. The Eagles just found ways to beat themselves as their star players came up short.

Play of the game

Brandon Aubrey hit a 60-yard field goal in the first quarter -- the first from that distance in the first quarter in NFL history. Aubrey's kick would have been good from 65 yards easily, then backed that kick up with a 59-yard field goal in the third quarter to put Dallas up 27-13. He's the first player to make two field goals of 59-plus yards in a game.

Aubrey hit three field goals of 50-plus yards in the game. He's 30 of 30 on field goal attempts this year, drilling the long ones with ease.

The quote

"He was pissed off at halftime and he was trying to rally the troops. I think Nick feels the same that we all do. We can play a lot better than we're playing right now." -- Eagles center Jason Kelce on the team's performance in the loss to the Cowboys.

Up next

The Cowboys (10-3) travel to Buffalo to face the Bills (7-6) on Sunday while the Eagles (10-3) travel to Seattle to face the Seahawks (6-7) next Monday night.

The Eagles are down double digits for the 5th straight game.

Rookie kicker Brandon Aubrey improves to 27-of-27 on field goals in his young career after draining a career-long 60-yarder. Dallas leads Philly 10-0 with 50 seconds left in the opening quarter. The Cowboys are able to turn Jalen Hurts' fumble into three additional points.

Dak Prescott hasn't been able to connect well with receiver Michael Gallup of late, only one catch in Weeks 11 and 12. However, he draws a clutch DPI call on Eagles Pro Bowl CB Darius Slay to keep the drive going.

Uncatchable balls shouldn't resort to the PI call, but that's the NFL. Way too many flags in this game for both teams.

Cowboys head coach Mike McCarthy trusts running back Tony Pollard with the fourth-and-two play, and he picks it up with relative ease with a gain of four.

Pollard suffered a gruesome, fractured left fibula injury in the NFC Divisional Round loss at the San Francisco 49ers in January. Since Week 10, after last playing the Eagles, Pollard has been a much more hard-charging, elusive runner as more time passes since his leg injury.

His 30% tackles avoided rate is the second-highest in the NFL since Week 10 among 20 players with at least 50 carries, and his 3.4 yards after contract per carry is the third-highest in the NFL in the same span. Pollard's three rushing touchdowns across the last three games are more than the two he had in the Cowboys' first nine.

Last time Jalen Hurts had a game without fumbling? Week 6 -- at Jets.

Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn has repeatedly called safety Donovan Wilson one of his defense's tone setters, and he displayed why on the strip of Eagles QB Jalen Hurts there.

Jalen Hurts took off to scramble, and he did well in picking up a first down after a gain of 11. However, Cowboys safety Donovan Wilson poked the football loose and recovered the fumble for the first takeaway of the night. Dallas didn't get any takeaways in the 28-23 loss at Philly in Week 9. The Dallas returns to the field at their own 21 up 7-0.

Jalen Hurts has 15 turnovers this year in 13 games. 10 INT, 5 fumbles lost (8 fumbles overall).

Penalties have stalled the Eagles offense. A false start by Lane Johnson and Jordan Mailata have pinned the Eagles back 10 yards. For a team that is struggling to get things consistent on offense, this is on par.

Three carries for 19 yards to start the drive for the Eagles. They were told by fans to run the ball. They are running the ball -- better.

Eagles TE Dallas Goedert hauls in his first catch, for 10 yards, since Week 9 against the Cowboys when he fractured his forearm. Tonight is his first game back.

After initially throwing a penalty flag for holding, the referees decide against the call, meaning wide receiver CeeDee Lamb's 13-yard receiving touchdowns stands. 7-0 Cowboys after the game's opening drive. Lamb is now the first Dallas player since another No. 88, Dez Bryant, to have five consecutive games with a receiving touchdown. Bryant did so from Weeks 13-17 in the 2013 season.

That appeared to be a hold on Jordan Davis by Tyron Smith I believe, but flag was picked up. TD Cowboys.

Cowboys begin with the ball, and they convert their first third down of the game by getting returner and wide receiver KaVontae Turpin involved early on offense. A receiver reverse to Turpin results in a game of 22. He caught his first career TD at the Eagles in Week 9.

Fully expecting the Cowboys to score a TD on their opening drive against an Eagles defense that can't seem to stop anyone of late.

Good evening everyone. Garrett Podell is in Dallas tonight to bring you the updates from the stadium. He's your go to for Cowboys tonight. I'll be your go to for Eagles. This will be a good one.

The Philadelphia Eagles secondary is susceptible given the unit has allowed 27 passing touchdowns, the second-most in the NFL ahead of only the Washington Commanders' 30 entering Week 14. Philadelphia only allowed 22 a year ago during its NFC Championship-winning season. Fifteen of those touchdowns have been allowed since Week 8, also the second-most in the NFL. In that same span. Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has thrown 20 touchdowns, the most in the NFL.

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts may be running for his life on Sunday night against the Cowboys. Lining up across from him will be Dallas All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons, the NFL's 2023 leader in quarterback pressures (78) and quarterback pressure rate (20.3%, best among players with at least 250 pass-rush snaps in this season) entering Week 14.

The Eagles are allowing a quarterback pressure rate of 41.1%, the fifth-highest rate in the NFL. Parsons totaled 1.5 sacks and six quarterback pressures in the Week 9 matchup.

During the Cowboys' 14-game home winning streak, they are 11-3 against the spread, and they are averaging 36.6 points per game during the NFL-best stretch. Dallas enters "Sunday Night Football" as 3.5-point home favorites.

A huge component of Dak Prescott's breakout is his telepathic connection with Pro Bowl wide receiver CeeDee Lamb. Lamb's 1,182 receiving yards are the second-most in the NFL entering Week 14. His 318 yards on go routes, also know as vertical routes, are third-most in the league on an individual route, trailing only Tyreek Hill, who is on pace to be the first player in NFL history with 2,000 receiving yards in a single season.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has entered the NFL MVP conversation over the last seven games since the Cowboys' 42-10 loss at the San Francisco 49ers in Week 5 on "Sunday Night football. He has 21 touchdown passes to only two interceptions since Week 6. He had 66-1 to odds entering Week 10, but Prescott is now the NFL MVP favorite with 3-1 odds. A productive win tonight could heavily swing the award in his favor.

The Dallas Cowboys defense believes "the secret sauce" to defeating the Philadelphia Eagles in their Week 14 rematch is winning on early downs (first and second down) in order to keep quarterback Jalen Hurts, and the Eagles stout offensive line out of the tush push zone, third or fourth and short.

Eagles tight end Dallas Goedert has been out since fracturing his forearm against the Cowboys in Week 9. After fully practicing every day this week, he will make his return tonight versus Dallas.

In the first matchup between these two teams, Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts accounted for three of Philadelphia's four touchdowns. He threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns, one to A.J. Brown and one to DeVonta Smith, and he ran for 36 yards and another touchdown on the ground.

Hurts and the Eagles will look to bounce back in Week 14 after losing 42-19 at home in Week 13 to the San Francisco 49ers. That snapped Hurts' 14-game winning streak against teams entering with a winning record, which was the longest quarterback streak since the 1970 NFL/AFL merger.

The Cowboys have a clean bill of health entering "Sunday Night Football" against the Philadelphia Eagles. Cowboys All-Pro edge rusher Micah Parsons was added to the injury report with an illness, but he is active. Dallas head coach Mike McCarthy is expected to call the offensive plays from the sideline despite undergoing an appendix procedure on Wednesday

The Eagles will attempt to do something on Sunday night at AT&T Stadium that hasn't occurred since Week 1 of the 2022 season when Tom Brady and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were in town: beat the Cowboys. Dallas is on a 14-game home winning streak, the longest active streak in the NFL and the second-longest in franchise history.

Eagles versus Cowboys is a matchup of two of the NFL's most dominant teams. Dallas entered Week 14 with a point differential of +168, the best in the league while Philadelphia possessed a total of +41, tied for the seventh-best mark entering the week.

The Eagles become the first team to clinch a playoff berth this season with a win tonight. Since the Los Angeles Rams lost earlier today in overtime at the Baltimore Ravens, Philadelphia reaching an 11-2 record would ensure they are participant in the NFC playoffs in January.
