Chiefs vs. Bills score: Josh Allen, Buffalo roll over Kansas City, get revenge in AFC title game rematch

The Buffalo Bills got their revenge on the Kansas City Chiefs. Josh Allen and Co. went to Arrowhead Stadium and whooped the home team 38-20 in a game that was delayed more than an hour due to severe weather at halftime and was not as competitive as the final score.

The Bills improved their record to 4-1 with the victory, while the Chiefs dropped to 2-3 and last place in the AFC West. Allen threw for three touchdown passes and ran for another, while the Buffalo defense held Patrick Mahomes to just 5 yards per attempt and intercepted him twice.

The Chiefs lost Clyde Edwards-Helaire to a knee injury during the game, and Travis Kelce later left the field after taking a huge hit from Bills safety Micah Hyde. It's safe to say the two-time defending AFC champions have some things to work on at the moment.

Here are some takeaways from Buffalo's big prime-time win:

Why the Bills won

They were basically a carbon copy of the Chiefs in peak form. Maybe even better. Let's start with the offense: Allen didn't throw it a ton compared to other outings, but when he did, he was a big-play machine, lasering deep shot after deep shot against a helpless Kansas City secondary to put the Chiefs on their toes early. On the ground, he was just as good, running hard to lead Buffalo in that regard, either pounding through or leaping over red defenders. This was an MVP-type night from him, with Dawson Knox, Stefon Diggs and Emmanuel Sanders chipping in with huge catches. Defensively, Sean McDermott's squad was just as impressive, making Mahomes uncomfortable for much of the night. Sure, they allowed No. 15 to sniff a comeback in the second half, but not for long, containing the Chiefs' weapons and rendering their rushing attack almost nonexistent. All in all, it was a total-package performance from the Bills, perhaps solidifying them as favorites in the AFC.

Why the Chiefs lost

A week after scoring touchdowns with video-game ease against the Eagles, Mahomes and Co. looked unusually out of sync at Arrowhead. Sometimes, drops were the culprit. Other times, Mahomes himself threw off-balance for no good reason. They flashed some red-zone creativity and looked primed for a potential shootout early, but they just never got into a rhythm. Edwards-Helaire struggled before leaving with a knee injury, so Mahomes was the only real threat on the ground, and not even Tyreek Hill or Travis Kelce could find much room deep downfield. As for their defense, it came up with a key stop or two, but it also looked like the absolute sieve it is for chunks of play. Tyrann Mathieu was left to watch with his arms up in frustration as Allen torched the secondary in each quarter, and Daniel Sorensen found himself on the wrong end of maybe a half-dozen deep balls.

Turning point

Down just seven points after holding the Bills to a field goal, the Chiefs dialed up a fourth-and-5 play from Buffalo's 32 with just two minutes left in the first half. But Mahomes couldn't connect with Kelce, so the Bills took over and proceeded to score in two plays, with Allen launching a 53-yard touchdown to Knox. That one put Buffalo up 24-10 ahead of the break, burying the Chiefs for the duration of the rainy evening.

Play of the game

Allen's connection with Knox was electric against the Chiefs, and this deep shot down the right sideline was a sight to behold:

What's next

The Bills (4-1) will be back in prime time in Week 6 on "Monday Night Football", when they're set to visit the Titans (3-2), who are fresh off a rout of the Jaguars. The Chiefs (2-3), meanwhile, will hit the road to take on Washington (2-3), which just fell to the Saints on Sunday afternoon.

Goodness gracious, how does Dawson Knox get that wide open? Josh Allen just keeping his eyes way downfield, and it keeps paying off. Bills suddenly routing the Chiefs at Arrowhead.

Wow. Another laser from Allen, this time after buying time behind the line of scrimmage. Nice job by Dawson Knox running the scramble drill, and Daniel Sorenson gets victimized by a big play again.

Mahomes had an absolute ton of time behind the line of scrimmage. Really impressive job by the Bills to stick in coverage for that long.

Interesting decision on tap for the Chiefs after the two-minute warning. Kick a 50-ish-yard field goal to go down 17-13 or try to convert fourth-and-5-ish to drive for the score?

The quarterbacks have 84 rushing yards on nine carries. Everyone else has 77 yards on 17 carries.

Nice job by the Kansas City defense to buckle down after the deep Diggs completion. Hold to a field goal and Mahomes now gets a chance to drive for a game-tying score before the end of the half. Buffalo gets the ball after the break, so this drive is big.

The Chiefs defense is an absolute sieve, in case you haven't noticed yet. And Josh Allen is picking it apart. Bills only need the ball for four plays, and they can put six on the board. It's like they are the Chiefs tonight.

Great pass protection and blitz pickup. Allen had ALL DAY in the pocket to find Stefon Diggs, who looked like he didn't see the defensive back behind him and started backing up toward the end zone instead of sprinting toward it.

The Chiefs running the ball on third down always seems like a waste. Why not put the ball in the hands of your best player?

Chiefs may be holding the ball, but that honestly might be working in the Bills' favor. You know the Chiefs are gonna score. You might as well have them take longer but fewer possessions. Obviously they're also capable of scoring in a hurry, but Buffalo is winning the efficiency battle. Let Kansas City have to work its way up and down the field while you breeze by them with touchdowns.

Good lord that was an absolute LASER!!!! Josh Allen hit Sanders over the top of L'Jarius Sneed for a touchdown. What a throw.

Josh Allen motioned Stefon Diggs into a stacked alignment to get him a free release, which allowed him to run that crossing route just past the first-down marker and move the chains.

The Bills offense has barely been on the field. Chiefs have had the ball for 14:31 so far, with both of their drives taking a ton of time to move the ball down the field.

Remember earlier in the game when I said the Chiefs like to get creative in the low red zone? Well, that was fun.

It looked like Andy Reid tried to call timeout prior to that play because the Chiefs were slow out of the huddle. They've been running up against the play clock on pretty much every snap. Unusual for a home team.

Josh Gordon in the right place at the right time for his first grab as a Chief, a first down to help Kansas City push deeper into Bills territory. His big body came in handy as Mahomes kind of just threw it up his way.

Another defensive holding penalty to give the Chiefs a first down. That's three on the Bills so far.

In the regular-season game between these teams last year, the Bills played very soft coverage and dared the Chiefs to run, and Clyde Edwards-Helaire ran 26 times for 161 yards. Chiefs backs have six carries for only 20 yards so far. Mahomes (20) and Tyreek Hill (15) have done the only good work on the ground.
