Chargers vs. Ravens score, takeaways: Baltimore defense stifles Justin Herbert, L.A. offense for 9th win

The Baltimore Ravens defense dominated the Los Angeles Chargers so thoroughly in their 20-10 Week 12 road win they put quarterback Justin Herbert in a time machine back to his second career start in Week 3 of the 2020 season. On Sunday night, Los Angeles committed four turnovers -- an interception and a lost fumble by Herbert as well as lost fumbles by Pro Bowl receiver Keenan Allen and running back Austin Ekeler. That gave the Chargers their first four-turnover game since Herbert's second start, a 21-16 home loss against the Carolina Panthers. The Ravens, now 9-3 entering their Week 13 bye, sit atop the AFC standings.

The four turnovers occurred in a span of five drives spread across the second, third and fourth quarters. Los Angeles went lost fumble (by Allen), lost fumble (by Ekeler), interception, punt and lost fumble (by Herbert on a strip sack). However, Lamar Jackson and the Ravens only scored three points off the four turnovers.

The Chargers took an early lead by driving down the field on its opening drive of the night, but the possession stalled deep in Ravens territory after an obvious late hit out of bounds against Justin Herbert went uncalled, and tight end Gerald Everett was instead flagged for retaliating against a Baltimore defender. Following Cameron Dicker's field goal, the Chargers managed only 38 yards of offense on 14 plays the rest of the first half.

Baltimore piled up a decent amount of yardage in the first half and Lamar Jackson was relatively efficient throwing the ball (12 of 18 for 115 yards and a touchdown), but the Ravens also only managed to score once on their first three possessions. At the tail end of a strong drive, Jackson found rookie wideout Zay Flowers in the back of the end zone from 3 yards out to give the team its first lead of the night. The 2019 NFL MVP finished with 177 passing yards and one passing touchdown on 18 of 32 passing while also rushing for 39 yards on 11 carries.

Then, after a late second-quarter fumble by Allen, the Ravens got back on the board. The fumble set them up with great field position, and even though the drive didn't go very far, Justin Tucker was able to add to Baltimore's tally from 42 yards out. The Chargers had another chance to drive for a trying score, but Ekeler fumbled on a checkdown. Another field goal from Tucker, this one from 48, was the only score of the third quarter. That kick extended the Baltimore lead to 13-3, with 10:53 left in the third quarter.

Herbert kick-started the scoring in the final frame with a 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Gerald Everett that capped a seven-play, 60-yard march to the end zone. All of a sudden, Los Angeles was within three with 8:32 left to play. Then, something else happened that the NFL world almost never sees: Tucker missed his first field goal inside of 50 yards in 2023, misfiring on a 44-yard attempt wide left with 2:57 left in the game. That miss opened the door for Herbert and the Chargers to, at a minimum, tie the game and force overtime.

After reaching as far as the Ravens' 46, the Chargers could go no further. A hard hit from Ravens linebacker Patrick Queen jarred a pass loose from Ekeler's arms to force an incompletion, and a blitz by cornerback Arthur Maulet on fourth-and-6 was enough for Maulet to pop Herbert as he released the football, causing it to bounce harmless to the SoFi Stadium turf. Herbert finished with 217 passing yards, one touchdown and one interception on 29 of 44 passing while leading the Chargers with 47 rushing yards on four carries.

Flowers provided the exclamation point in Baltimore's victory, taking a shotgun handoff 37 yards for a touchdown that put the Ravens up 20-10 with 1:36 to go. Flowers, who totaled 62 yards from scrimmage (25 receiving and a touchdown on five catches as well as the 37-yard rushing touchdown), accounted for both Ravens touchdowns on "Sunday Night Football."

Why the Ravens won

Any team that wins the turnover battle 4-0 is bound to emerge victorious. That's exactly what happened. Jackson played turnover-free football, and that's pretty much all Baltimore needed of him tonight. Flowers becoming the first Ravens rookie with a receiving and rushing touchdown in the same game was more than enough.

Why the Chargers lost

The Chargers did what they're most known for: coming up just short. Los Angeles had a chance to tie the game or take the lead after a rare missed field goal by Tucker gave them the football with just under three minutes left, but Herbert was unable to connect with his receivers when he needed to the most. That pretty much sums up the Chargers season.

Turning point

Maulet's blitz and hit of Herbert on fourth-and-6, just after the two-minute warning, all but iced the win. He also hauled in Herbert's only interception earlier in the fourth quarter, but this play officially swung the game in favor of the Ravens.

Play of the game

The most explosive score of the night was Flowers' 37-yard rushing touchdown that sealed Baltimore's victory. In a game that was mostly lacking in offense, Flowers shined brightly, accounting for both of the Ravens touchdowns.

What's Next

The AFC North-leading 9-3 Ravens will return home for their Week 13 bye. The 4-7 Chargers have a cross-country road trip in Week 13 as they head to New England to play the 2-9 Patriots.

Chargers brought heat on third down and Lamar tried to hit the one-on-one to OBJ but put a little too much on the throw. Forces the Ravens into a 49-yard Tucker field goal to make it a 13-3 game.

This Ravens WR room has so much more juice than at any time in the last few years. You never saw their receivers in recent seasons do anything like what Flowers just did.

Alright, the Ravens get the ball first to start the second half. They have a chance to extend their lead to multiple scores here.

Woah. Now the Chargers have a shot for a Hail Mary. Very weird play from the Ravens right there.

And now Lamar fumbles. Crazy. Ravens won't get a chance for a field goal because of where the fumble occurred. Khalil Mack again.

Keenan Allen trying to make up for the fumble, picks up a pair of catches to start the drive... and then Austin Ekeler fumbles after a catch over the middle and the Chargers turn it over again. Unreal stuff.

Khalil Mack's sack stalled that Baltimore drive. Chargers have a chance to either cut into the lead and tie it up with their final trip.

That sure seems like a play that's going to come back, but we'll see how the refs rule on it.

That is an enormous stop for the Chargers defense. Kenneth Murray came flying in to take down Gus Edwards before he got anywhere close to the line.

Lamar is doing a great job of changing arm angles to fit the ball into tight windows. He's done that 3 or 4 times already tonight.

Really rough drive for the Chargers:

  • Sack
  • Herbert throws incomplete to Jalen Guyton into double coverage
  • Screen to Josh Kelley (rather than Austin Ekeler) goes nowhere

Ravens have a strategy in the pass game: Target seventh-round rookie Deane Leonard:

Then the Ravens bring the Gus Bus in and fake the run, with Lamar finding Zay Flowers wide open in the back of the end zone. Great play call there.

The Ravens must have seen something on film that is leading them to use their two smaller RBs (Mitchell/Hill) much more often than Edwards, who has been the lead back of late. The Chargers tend to play a lot of two-high shell coverages to encourage teams to run, so maybe Baltimore wants to get the speedier backs in space.

Odell is looking really good these past couple weeks. He led the team in receiving against the Bengals and already has three grabs tonight.

TE screen there to Isaiah Likely. He's filling in for Mark Andrews, whose season was possibly ended last week when he suffered an ankle injury on the opening drive against the Bengals. Likely is really talented but doesn't get a lot of opportunity behind one of the best in the game.

Kyle Hamilton is having a fantastic season. His versatility is key to the Baltimore defense. He blew that second-down play up deep in the backfield and basically ended the drive himself.

Terry McAulay says on the NBC broadcast that the Chargers missed out on ANOTHER 15-yard penalty. Should have been kick-catch interference on the punt.

No Gus Edwards on that first Ravens drive, which is interesting. Interior of the Baltimore OL got beat pretty badly on third down to force Lamar to throw it away. Chargers will get a chance to extend their lead.

Odell Beckham just caught a pass pretty near to the same spot where he tore his ACL in this stadium in the Super Bowl a couple years ago. (Going in the opposite direction, but similar area of the field.P

The Ravens have explosive rookie RB Keaton Mitchell out there for the first snap of the game. That's new.

And the Chargers get penalized for unnecessary roughness instead after Gerald Everett takes exception to the hit. Really rough sequence for LA.

Not sure how Gene Stone avoided a flag for that very obviously late hit on Justin Herbert. That was pretty blatant.

The Chargers were the third-worst short-yardage running team in the NFL coming into this game, converting only 50% of the time on third- or fourth-and-1. They just converted a big one right there.

The Chargers will start this game with the ball, so we'll see Justin Herbert against Mike McDonald's defense. Worth noting that Marlon Humphrey is out, so Keenan Allen could have some friendlier matchups in the slot.

The Ravens can move into first place in the AFC if they win tonight. At 9-3 they would have the conference's best record.

There have also already been three different teams in first place throughout the day today. The Dolphins started the day in first. The Jaguars won early in the afternoon and took over. Then the Chiefs won in the late-afternoon window and assumed the top spot.

Playing DFS tonight? Here's Mike McClure's guide for who to roster.

Part of McClure's optimal NFL DFS strategy also includes rostering Ravens quarterback Lamar Jackson . The 2019 NFL MVP has the Ravens offense in the midst of one of its most dominant runs over Jackson 's tenure in Baltimore. The Ravens have scored at least 30 points in five straight games and Jackson is QB7 in Fantasy football during that stretch.

His rushing ability provides a tremendous advantage and floor in NFL DFS lineups as the 26-year-old is averaging 51.7 rushing yards over his last three contests. The Chargers are allowing the second-most Fantasy points per game to opposing quarterbacks this season, including the most passing yards in the NFL. The Chargers are allowing 291.6 passing yards per game, over 20 yards more than the next-highest team, making

Jackson well worthy of his price tag for NFL DFS lineups.  See the rest of McClure's NFL DFS player pool right here.
