Browns vs. Cardinals score: Arizona remains undefeated as injuries pile up for Cleveland

The Cleveland Browns had a glimmer of hope just before halftime when Baker Mayfield converted a Hail Mary to wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones. It was the only moment of joy for Browns fans Sunday evening. Arizona clobbered Cleveland 37-14 to remain undefeated.

The game ended with Case Keenum at quarterback, D'Ernest Johnson at running back, Blake Hance at left tackle and James Hudson III at right tackle for the Browns. Mayfield aggravated a left shoulder injury and running back Kareem Hunt left with a potentially serious lower leg injury. Kevin Stefanski's team quit in the fourth quarter.

Arizona remains the league's only undefeated team.

Why the Cardinals won

Arizona took advantage of Cleveland's mistakes and needed to do little more. The Browns committed three turnovers and nine penalties worth 88 yards lost. Absent starting center Rodney Hudson, the Cardinals did fumble four times but recovered every single one. With Kliff Kingsbury at home, the offense converted 8 of 15 third downs and its lone fourth-down attempt.

Kyler Murray was efficient completing 67 percent of his passes with four touchdowns. A.J. Green, Christian Kirk and DeAndre Hopkins were making big plays down the field for their quarterback.

Why the Browns lost

Where does one begin to answer this question? Was it the drops by David Njoku, Odell Beckham Jr. and others? Was it Mayfield's reckless play resulting in two lost fumbles and an interception? Was it injuries to Nick Chubb, Jedrick Wills Jr. and Jack Conklin? Was it because the secondary failed to properly communicate for the second consecutive game leading to multiple coverage busts? Was it the lack of effort in the fourth quarter? Was it the nine penalties or aggravated injuries to Hunt, Mayfield and Beckham?

Yeah, all of those are valid points.

Play of the game

The Browns were down to their final play before halftime when Mayfield found wide receiver Donovan Peoples-Jones for a 57-yard Hail Mary conversion. The score brought the Browns within single digits after being down 20-0. According to Next Gen Stats, the pass had a 15.4 percent chance of being completed. The ball traveled 66.4 yards in the air, which is the longest completed pass in the Next Gen Stats era (sine 2016) by 2 yards.

Peoples-Jones finished with four receptions for 101 yards and two touchdowns.

Stat of the game

With a sack against the Cardinals in his 57th career game, Myles Garrett is the third fastest player in NFL history (sacks became official in 1982) to reach 50 career sacks behind Reggie White (40 games) and Derrick Thomas (54 games). It was also Garrett's eighth sack of the season, which is the most among all NFL players.

What's next?

Cleveland has some soul-searching to do because there is a quick turnaround at home on "Thursday Night Football" against the 3-3 Broncos. Believe it or not, the Browns have yet to play an AFC North game but that changes drastically soon. Six of the final 11 games come against divisional foes, including the Steelers and Bengals immediately following Denver.

Arizona returns home for its next two games against the Texans and Packers. Houston has been frisky but the Cardinals should have a sizeable skill advantage. Despite a 5-1 start, Green Bay has hardly inspired fear through its play in 2021.

- What keeps this Browns' rush game chugging is that both Nick Chubb and Kareem Hunt bounce off defenders and keep on gaining yards.

  • They both rank in the top 4 in yards after contact/rush -- Chubb is 2nd averaging 4.17 yards after contact/rush, Hunt is 4th w/ 3.71 yards

- With each run, Chubb is quickly stamping his name as one of the most efficient rushers in NFL history.

  • The 4th-year RB has averaged 5.3 yards/rush throughout his NFL career… amongst RBs w/ 500+ rushes, that ranks 3rd in NFL history below only Bo Jackson and Jamaal Charles

- The Browns put up 42 points thanks to their ground attack, which has been merely unstoppable this season.

  • They have had 6 straight games of 150+ rush yards dating back to last season… with 1 more 150+ rush yard game, it would tie the franchise record.

  • They lead the NFL in rush TDs (12), no other team has more than 8

- The Browns played nearly flawless football against the Chargers, but fell short in a 47-42 classic.

  • The Browns became the first team in NFL history to score 40 points and not turn the ball over... and lose the game.

    • Teams are now 401-1 in the Super Bowl era when they scored 40+ PTS and did not turn the ball over… the Browns are that only loss

- Flying under the radar has to be the play of the Cardinals' defense.

  • They have held teams to 20 PTS or fewer in 4 of their 5 wins this season

  • They rank 6th in the NFL in OPP PPG (19.0), 3rd in def 3rd down pct (31.6) and T-3rd in takeaways (10)

- Leading that offense is MVP-candidate Kyler Murray who has been the perfect blend of efficient and explosive for the Cardinals.

  • He's the 3rd QB in NFL history to complete 75.0% of his passes for over 1,500 yards joining Drew Brees in 2018 and Peyton Manning in 2013 -- Manning went on to win NFL MVP and the Broncos made the SB that season

- The Cardinals' offense stumbled against the 49ers, failing to score 30 PTS in a game for the first time this season.

  • But, this offense still remains one of the most deadliest units in football

Something has to give:

- Cardinals have won 7 of their past 11 road games, including each of the past 3.

- Browns are 8-2 in their last 10 home games and have won 3 straight.

- The Cardinals improved to 5-0 for the first time since 1974, when the St. Louis Cardinals started 7-0

  • That Cardinals team finished 10-4 and lost in the NFC Divisional

  • That team's HC was Don Coryell, who went on to reinvent the NFL later in his career thru his "Air Coryell" offense for the Chargers (1978-1986)

- Cardinals still remain as the NFL's lone unbeaten team.

The final unbeaten team in the NFL hasn't won the Super Bowl since 2006, when the Colts started 9-0 and went on to beat the Bears in Super Bowl XLI

Browns lead the all-time series 33-15, but the Cardinals have won 5 of the past 6 meetings.

  • This will be a meeting of Heisman-winning, #1 overall pick, and Oklahoma alums Kyler Murray and Baker Mayfield -- Murray won the 1st matchup in 2019, 38-24.

Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury, G.M. Steve Keim, defensive tackle Corey Peters, edge rusher Zach Allen and edge rusher Chandler Jones are all out for as part of the COVID-19 list. TE Maxx Williams and C Rodney Hudson were added to the Injured Reserve this week.
