The first round of Chicago Bears roster cuts left them with three quarterbacks and brought an end to one veteran player's attempt to resurrect what has been a disappointing career.
The Bears still had one more player to cut after Sunday's roster moves, which included putting safety Brandon Hardin on season-ending injured reserve due to a neck injury and placing wide receiver Johnny Knox on the physically-unable-to-perform list while he rehabs from back surgery.
Notable cuts: DT John McCargo (7th year, North Carolina State) -- The 26th overall pick of the 2006 draft by the Buffalo Bills, McCargo never achieved close to the status the Bills had hoped. He has started only one game in his NFL career. His fate seemed sealed from the time the Bears traded with Tampa Bay for DT Brian Price. It would appear Price will get the last DT spot, and veteran Nate Collins remains in the running, as well. ... Also, quarterback Matt Blanchard (rookie, Wisconsin-Whitewater, undrafted) was waived after he had directed a late fourth-quarter drive to a game-winning field goal against Washington in the second preseason game. Blanchard was a local player out of Lake Zurich High School in a Chicago suburb and had a 45-0 record as a starter at Division III Wisconsin-Whitewater. With Jay Cutler, Jason Campbell and Josh McCown ahead of him, there was no room for a fourth.
Also cut on defense: LB K.C. Asiodu (3rd year, undrafted free agent, 2009); S Trevor Coston (rookie, undrafted, 2012); DE Derek Walker (first year, undrafted 2009, Illinois); DE Thaddeus Gibson (3rd year, undrafted free agent, Ohio State); LB Adrien Cole (rookie, undrafted, Louisiana Tech).
Also cut on offense: WR Chris Summers (rookie, undrafted, Liberty); WR Terriun Crump (rookie, undrafted, Western Illinois); G Nick Pieschel (rookie, undrafted, Central Florida).
