Top Dennis Smith Jr. News

  • Hornets' Dennis Smith: Dishes out nine assists

Smith notched 15 points (6-11 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 3-4 FT), nine assists and three rebounds across 29 minutes during Monday's 120-102 loss to the Jazz.

Though he hasn't entered the starting five while point guard LaMelo Ball (ankle) has been sidelined for the past two games, Smith has benefited from an uptick in playing time on the second unit and has been a strong source of assists in the star floor general's absence. Smith hasn't provided his usual production in the defensive categories in either of those contests, but he made up for it Monday by providing better-than-expected scoring production. Fantasy managers should still continue to stream Smith mainly for assists and steals for any future games that Ball misses.

  • Hornets' Dennis Smith: Gets more run after LaMelo's exit

Smith finished with nine points (2-8 FG, 0-2 3Pt, 5-6 FT), seven rebounds, two rebounds and one steal across 29 minutes in Wednesday's 122-117 win over the Rockets.

While Smith's overall stat line doesn't inspire reason to run to the waiver wire, the fact that starting point guard LaMelo Ball exited the contest with a sprained left ankle is enough to make Smith worthy of a cursory pickup in 12-team category leagues. The Hornets have yet to provide an updated timeline for Ball's return, but given that he previously missed 13 and 11 games earlier in the season due to sprains of the same left ankle, it's reasonable to expect the third-year player to miss some time after his latest aggravation. In his 11 starts this season when Ball has been sidelined, Smith averaged 10.0 points, 6.5 assists, 3.9 rebounds, 1.9 steals and 0.5 blocks in 30.9 minutes.

  • Hornets' Dennis Smith: Decreased minutes again

Smith contributed two points (1-4 FG), one rebound, three assists and one steal in 17 minutes during Saturday's 122-106 loss to Boston.

With the backcourt of Charlotte back to full strength, Smith has had much less of a role and his minutes have dropped in each of the past three games. He can still put up decent numbers, particularly steals and assists, but only if he's going to see over 20 minutes per game. Look at the 25-year-old guard as a solid stream option if LaMelo Ball or Terry Rozier miss some time.

  • Hornets' Dennis Smith: Scores eight points in return

Smith (ankle) registered eight points (3-10 FG, 1-3 3Pt, 1-2 FT), three rebounds, one assist and one steal in 18 minutes during Monday's 121-115 loss to the Lakers.

Smith missed each of Charlotte's previous 18 games due to an ankle injury, so it's not surprising that he was limited to 18 minutes Monday. The sixth-year pro struggled with his shot and committed three fouls in his limited court time, though that's understandable given the long layoff. Smith was working as the Hornets' staring point guard earlier in the campaign, but those days are numbered now that LaMelo Ball is back in action. That being said, the Hornets could look to have Smith and Ball share the court more frequently moving forward, as Kelly Oubre (hand) didn't play Monday and Gordon Hayward exited early with a hamstring injury. Both Oubre and Hayward could be sidelined for the Hornets' next game Wednesday against the Grizzlies.

  • Hornets' Dennis Smith: Available to return Monday

Smith (ankle) is available for Monday's contest against the Lakers, Roderick Boone of The Charlotte Observer reports.

After missing Charlotte's past 18 contests, Smith is officially available to make his return to game action. The 25-year-old guard was productive for the Hornets earlier this season, averaging 9.3 points, 3.3 rebounds, 5.7 assists and 1.8 steals over his first 15 showings of the year. However, it wouldn't be surprising to see Charlotte ease Smith back into the lineup, making him a risky fantasy option Monday.

  • Hornets' Dennis Smith: Intends to play Monday

Smith (ankle) intends to return to action Monday against the Lakers, Chris Haynes of Turner Sports reports.

Smith has been sidelined since Nov. 23 due to his ankle injury, but he should be back on the court Monday after initially being listed as questionable for the game. Given the length of his absence, it wouldn't be surprising to see him face a minutes restriction, assuming he's officially given the green light.

  • Hornets' Dennis Smith: Questionable to play Monday

Smith (ankle) is questionable for Monday's game against the Lakers.

While there's no clarity on whether Smith will be available or not, this is a step in the right direction for the floor general after not appearing in each of the Hornets' last 18 games. Even if he does return to action, his fantasy appeal should be minimal, both due to the presence of LaMelo Ball in the lineup and also due to the rust that comes associated with not stepping on a basketball court since Nov. 23.
