  • Pirates' Rich Hill: Scratched due to illness

Hill has been scratched from Sunday's Grapefruit League today against Atlanta due to illness, Justice delos Santos of MLB.com reports. Hill will miss Sunday's start against Atlanta, and Will Crowe will be on the bump in his place. The left-handed hurler should be fine for the regular season barring something unforeseeable.

  • Pirates' Rich Hill: Sharp through two spring outings

Hill has allowed one earned run on three hits and two walks while striking out four across five innings of Grapefruit League action. Hill signed a one-year deal with the Pirates over the winter and was brought on in part to mentor the team's young starting staff. However, so long as he is healthy, Hill should be a consistent member of the rotation. He's looked fairly sharp early in camp and will be looking to improve on the 4.27 ERA and 1.30 WHIP that he posted across 124.1 innings in 2022.

  • Pirates' Rich Hill: Gets one-year deal from Pirates

Hill signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the Pirates on Tuesday, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. Hill is coming off a season with the Red Sox which saw him put up a 4.27 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 109 strikeouts over 124.1 innings covering 26 starts. He'll turn 43 in March but has remained mostly effective in recent years, albeit with a drop in strikeout rate. Hill will be a candidate to be traded to a contender at the deadline if he's healthy and pitching well.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Quality start to wrap up 2022

Hill pitched six innings, surrendering three runs (one earned) on three hits and a walk while striking out six in Monday's win over the Rays. He did not factor into the decision. Hill gave up a solo home run to Wander Franco in the top of the first inning before Manuel Margot took him deep for a two-run shot in the bottom of the fourth frame after an error extended the inning. The homers accounted for all the damage against him in the contest and the left-hander notched his second consecutive quality start. Hill will finish his season with a 4.27 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 109 strikeouts over 124.1 frames in 26 starts.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Fans nine in six shutout innings

Hill (8-7) earned the win Wednesday, allowing no runs on five hits and one walk with nine strikeouts over six innings against the Orioles. The 42-year-old turned back the clock Wednesday as he fired six masterful innings. His nine punchouts were his second highest of the season, and the quality start his first since Aug. 27. The strong outing lowered Hill's ERA to 4.41 on the season, which would be his highest since 2013. He lines up to face Tampa Bay next week in his final start of the season.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: No-decision Friday

Hill didn't factor into the decision in Friday's 5-4 loss to the Yankees, giving up four runs on five hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out four. The 42-year-old lefty lasted five innings for only the second time in five September outings, and he's coughed up at least four runs in four of those. Hill's 6.75 ERA and 1.72 WHIP on the month suggest he has very little left in the tank right now, and if he does return for a 19th MLB campaign in 2023, it seems highly unlikely he'll be asked to fill a traditional starting role.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Allows four runs in loss

Hill (7-7) took the loss against the Royals on Saturday, allowing four runs on eight hits while striking out four batters and walking none over 4.2 innings. Hill had a rough day on the mound, tossing 58 of 81 pitches for strikes across 4.2 frames and allowing four runs to score, all of which came via RBI singles or doubles. This has been a tough month for the veteran, who has allowed 13 earned runs across 17.2 innings for a 6.62 ERA. Saturday's outing raised his season ERA to 4.70.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Fires five scoreless innings

Hill (7-6) allowed two hits and three walks over five scoreless innings Sunday, striking out seven and earning a win over Baltimore. Hill let just one Oriole reach scoring position during his dominant victory. Since his last win Aug. 27, the veteran southpaw had been tagged for nine runs over eight frames in two appearances. However, with the standout performance Sunday, he lowered his ERA to 4.56 alongside an 86:33 K:BB across 22 starts this season. Hill is expected to face the Royals at home next week.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Knocked around in loss

Hill (6-6) took the loss Tuesday in Tampa Bay, allowing five runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out three in four innings. Randy Arozarena deposited an 0-2 pitch into the seats for a three-run homer in the first inning against Hill to get the scoring started for the Rays. In the third, Harold Ramirez plated two runs with a single to put Tampa Bay up 5-2. Ten of the 20 batters Hill faced reached safely and the 42-year-old was removed after four innings with only 64 pitches thrown. He's allowed four runs or more in four of his last six starts and has a 6.33 ERA and 1.48 ERA in 27 innings in that span.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Walks four in no-decision

Hill pitched four-plus innings in a no-decision against Texas on Thursday. He allowed four runs on five hits and four walks while striking out two batters. Hill pitched his best game of the season his previous time out, striking out 11 batters over seven scoreless innings against Tampa Bay. He couldn't carry over that momentum, however, as he tied a season high with four walks and was lifted after allowing the first three batters he faced in the fifth frame to reach base. Hill hasn't had many big blowups this season, but he's allowed at least four runs in six of his 20 outings, leading to a mediocre 4.52 ERA for the year. He no longer strikes out batters on a consistent basis, further dampening his value in fantasy.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Dominant in win

Hill (6-5) earned the win Saturday, allowing zero runs on three hits and one walk over seven innings in a 5-1 win over the Rays. He struck out 11. Hill did not allow an extra-base hit in his outstanding performance against the Rays. The lefty has had a tough stretch following his return from a knee injury, recording a 7.50 ERA and allowing 16 hits over 12 innings in the three starts prior to this contest. The 42-year-old veteran currently has his highest ERA (4.32) since 2013 when he recorded a 6.28 ERA in 38.2 innings as a reliever.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Next start coming Saturday

Hill is scheduled to start Saturday's game against the Rays at Fenway Park, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Manager Alex Cora had previously suggested that Hill could piggyback Brayan Bello in the latter's start Wednesday against the Blue Jays, but Hill may only be available in relief in an emergency now that he's been confirmed to make his next start this weekend. When he takes the mound Saturday, Hill will be pitching on nine days' rest after having made his previous start Aug. 17 in Pittsburgh.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Likely to piggyback Bello

Red Sox manager Alex Cora hinted that Hill will piggyback starter Brayan Bello in Wednesday's game against the Blue Jays, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Boston has already locked in Kutter Crawford and Michael Wacha to start Thursday's series finale and Friday's series opener versus Tampa Bay, respectively, so unless Hill is being pushed to the back of the pitching schedule, Wednesday marks the most logical day for him to get some innings. Bello likely won't be serving as a traditional opener after building up to 4.1 innings in his most recent rehab start, but Hill could still have better odds than usual of factoring into any decision even if he has a lighter workload than normal.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Earns road win

Hill (5-5) earned the win Wednesday, allowing two runs on three hits and zero walks over five innings against Pittsburgh. He struck out four. Hill surrendered a two-run homer to outfielder Bryan Reynolds with nobody out in the first inning, but he otherwise kept Pittsburgh off the board. The 42-year-old has been vastly better on the road with a 3.44 ERA and a 1.13 WHIP in 52.1 innings compared to a 6.82 ERA and a 1.62 WHIP in 30.1 innings at home. The lefty has not been built for longevity this season as he has pitched five innings or more just eight times in 18 starts.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Hit hard in no-decision

Hill did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing four runs on seven hits and one walk over four innings against Atlanta. He did not record a strikeout. Austin Riley got to Hill for an RBI triple to score Ronald Acuna in the first inning. Atlanta then tagged hill for three more runs in the third inning before manager Alex Cora pulled him from the game. Hill has now gone three straight games allowing three or more runs while failing to reach five innings and holds a 4.75 ERA on the season. He next lines up to face the Yankees this weekend.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Allows four runs in loss

Hill (4-5) took the loss to the Astros on Wednesday, allowing four runs on six hits while striking out one and walking three over three innings. Hill threw 40 of 58 pitches for strikes across three frames and allowed four runs thanks to a groundout, a sac fly and a two-run homer. The veteran lefty has not been sharp this year and has especially struggled in his past eight outings with a 5.12 ERA.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Picking up start Wednesday

Hill (knee) is scheduled to start Wednesday's game in Houston, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Boston activated Hill from the 15-day injured list ahead of Monday's series opener, but manager Alex Cora declined to define what the veteran southpaw's role would look like upon his return. After he wasn't needed out of the bullpen either of the last two days, Hill will end up slotting back into the rotation as a replacement for Brayan Bello, who had previously been listed as Wednesday's starter. Since Hill covered only three innings and 56 pitches in his lone minor-league rehab outing prior to being activated from the IL, he could be capped at around 75 pitches Wednesday, which could make it difficult for him to factor into any decision.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Activated, next start TBD

Hill (knee) was activated from the 15-day injured list Monday, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The Red Sox have confirmed starters for the next few days, and it was reported earlier in the day that Hill would not start for the big club Wednesday as scheduled, so perhaps he is going to work out of the bullpen as a piggyback option for now. He gave up one run on four hits and zero walks while striking out five in three innings in his rehab outing last week.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Will not start Wednesday

Hill (knee) will not return to action Wednesday against the Astros, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. It was reported earlier Monday that Hill was on track to return to action Wednesday, but it turns out he is not ready to rejoin Boston's rotation just yet. Brayan Bello will get the nod Wednesday for the Red Sox.

  • Red Sox's Rich Hill: Lined up to start Wednesday

Hill (knee) is expected to be activated from the 15-day injured list to start Wednesday's game against the Astros, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. Hill had been targeting Tuesday's contest for his potential return from the IL, but the Red Sox will instead have Nathan Eovaldi and Kutter Crawford start the first two games of their series in Houston. Though he'll miss out on a two-start week as a result, Hill should be ready to take the hill for the series finale with the Astros unless he experiences an unexpected setback with his knee within the next two days. If Hill does in fact get the starting nod Wednesday, the veteran southpaw could have a limited pitch count after he covered three innings and tossed 56 pitches in his lone rehab start with Double-A Portland last week.
