Callihan is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Brewers.
The left-handed hitter will hit the bench for the second time in the series while the Brewers face off against another lefty starter in Robert Gasser. Since blasting two home runs in a June 10 game against the Dodgers, Callihan has left the yard just once in his subsequent 24 contests, and he's slashing an underwhelming .231/.282/.354 during that stretch. He could soon find himself as the odd man out of the lineup against right-handed pitching after the Pirates completed a trade earlier in the weekend for another left-handed bat in Jacob Gonzalez, who may be in store for playing time at first base while Spencer Horwitz (hamstring) remains on the injured list.

Callihan is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta.
After starting in each of the last three games at three different positions, Callihan will give up his spot in the lineup Wednesday to designated hitter Marcell Ozuna. Callihan was instrumental in Pittsburgh's comeback Wednesday, blasting a three-run jack in the eighth inning to put the Pirates ahead 7-6. He also launched a solo homer off Shohei Ohtani earlier in the contest. Callihan has gone 4-for-12 with four extra-base hits, six RBI, five walks and a stolen base since being called up for his Pittsburgh debut in late May, and Wednesday's heroics should bolster his case for more playing time.

Callihan was recalled from Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday but wasn't in the starting lineup. The Pirates recalled Callihan from Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday.
Callihan has spent the entire season at Indianapolis up to this point, slashing .223/.305/.346 with five home runs, 16 RBI, 30 runs scored and eight steals through 49 games. Although he hasn't been a very efficient producer at the plate, he'll give the Pirates value as a defender capable of covering all three bases as well as the corner outfield positions. Esmerlyn Valdez was optioned to Triple-A in a corresponding move.

The Pirates optioned Callihan to Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, Colin Beazley of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports.
Callihan was acquired by the Pirates from the Reds in early March in a move that saw Kyle Nicolas go to Cincinnati. Callihan was competing for a depth spot on the Pirates' Opening Day roster and could see some major-league action in 2026 if Pittsburgh needs a utility man on the roster. He made his major-league debut with the Reds in 2025, appearing in four games and going 1-for-6 with an RBI.

Reds' Tyler Callihan: Fully cleared
Reds manager Terry Francona said Sunday that Callihan (forearm) has been fully cleared for all baseball activities during spring training, Charlie Goldsmith of Fox 19 Now Cincinnati reports.
Callihan has had an incredibly unlucky professional career when it comes to his health, with his latest setback coming in May, when he snapped his forearm trying to make a sliding catch in Atlanta. He's facing an uphill battle to make the team as a bench player coming out of spring training, with Will Benson and JJ Bleday seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order among Cincinnati's left-handed-hitting corner outfielders.

Reds' Tyler Callihan: Likely done for season
Reds manager Terry Francona said July 10 that Callihan (forearm) recently had surgery on his left wrist and isn't expected to return from the 60-day injured list this season, Pat Brennan of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.
Callihan had been on the shelf since May 6 after suffering two broken bones in his left forearm a day earlier, when he crashed into an outfield wall while pursing a flyball. He underwent surgery shortly after that incident, but he had been cleared to resume light baseball activities about a month later. Unfortunately for Callihan, his wrist had been bothering him during his ramp-up process, and after consulting with a doctor in New York, he elected to have another follow-up surgery. Callihan should be back to full health for spring training and will look to compete for a utility role with the Reds in camp.

This was the first time Callihan played catch since breaking his forearm six weeks ago. Callihan underwent surgery May 6 to repair two broken bones in his left forearm and isn't expected to resume workouts for 6-to-8 weeks, MLB.com reports.
The Reds initially placed Callihan on the 10-day injured list the same day of his surgery before transferring him to the 60-day IL on May 9. Since he'll need to pick up some competitive at-bats during a minor-league rehab assignment once he's cleared to resume baseball activities, Callihan will most likely need more than minimum 60 days before returning from the IL. After getting his first big-league call-up April 30, Callihan went 1-for-6 with an RBI in four games before landing on the shelf.
