Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Tallies three hits in loss
Soderstrom went 3-for-5 with a double in Tuesday's 5-3 loss to the Mariners.
Soderstrom has opened May going 8-for-25 (.320) over six games. It's been mostly an empty average so far this month -- he's added one RBI, one stolen base and three runs scored, and his double Tuesday was his first extra-base hit of the month. Overall, Soderstrom is at a .291/.353/.525 slash line with nine home runs, 25 RBI, 23 runs scored, two stolen bases and six doubles over 37 contests. He's already matched or surpassed many of his totals from 61 games in 2024, so this could end up being a breakout year for the 23-year-old.

Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Receiving first day off
Soderstrom is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins.
Soderstrom will get his first day off of the season, in the midst of a rough patch at the dish. After slugging nine home runs in the Athletics' first 19 games, Soderstrom has gone without a long ball over the ensuing 15 contests and is slashing .228/.286/.281 with three doubles, one stolen base, six RBI and five runs during that stretch, a downturn that has coincided with a shift to the outfield to accommodate rookie Nick Kurtz. Soderstrom will give up his spot in the lineup Sunday to Miguel Andujar, who will start in left field and bat cleanup.

Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Will see time in left field
Athletics general manager David Forst said Tuesday that Soderstrom will see some playing time in left field and at designated hitter once first baseman Nick Kurtz is promoted from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
Soderstrom has never played a position other than first base and catcher during his time in professional ball, so he will be learning left field on the fly. Brent Rooker will also see increased reps in left field in addition to DH. Kurtz is likely to see some action at DH as well, but most of his playing time will likelly come at first base, where he is regarded as a superior defender to Soderstrom.

Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Adds six RBI to explosive start
Soderstrom went 3-for-5 with a pair of three-run home runs Tuesday against the White Sox.
Soderstrom continued his upstart beginning to the season, cranking his seventh big fly of the year to bring three runs in during the first inning. He wasn't done there, however, launching his eighth long ball to drive in three more runs and push the Athletics in front 9-3 in the sixth inning. The 2020 first-rounder leads the major leagues in homers to this point, slashing an exceptional .328/.403/.734 with two doubles, 17 RBI and 15 runs scored through 72 plate appearances.

Athletics' Tyler Soderstrom: Could get reps at third base
The Athletics have mulled giving Soderstrom some reps at third base as a way to clear a spot for the arrival of Nick Kurtz, Martin Gallegos of MLB.com reports.
It might be the least likely of the numerous ideas the A's are kicking around to come to fruition. Soderstrom has never played third base before, and having him attempt to learn a new position on the fly while he's showing signs of an offensive breakout could be unwise. A likelier scenario is Brent Rooker moving back to the outfield while Soderstrom and Kurtz split reps between first base and designated hitter.
