Player Outlook
Francisco Alvarez didn't break camp with the Mets, but he was called up a week into the season and became the regular backstop, catching two-thirds of the club's games, along with seven games as the designated hitters. Alvarez fanned 26 percent of the time, which was in range of his minor league track record. However, his walk rate was just eight percent, considerably lower than his minor league pedigree. An above average exit velocity on fly balls supported bashing 25 homers. However, Alvarez's .222 BABIP, along with an above average strikeout rate rendered him a batting average liability. Some of the low BABIP was an unusually low line drive rate, along with a low BABIP on grounders. Both should improve this season, but Alvarez's average will still likely be detrimental to a fantasy lineup. On the other hand, his power is real, and his run production should pick up as the Mets offense should improve. Alvarez's defense and framing were excellent, though he had trouble controlling the running game. Alvarez should be among the leaders in homers from catchers, just make sure you can absorb his low average.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Rejoining lineup Sunday

Alvarez (elbow) will start at catcher and bat fifth in Sunday's game against the Pirates. Alvarez was held out for Saturday's 5-2 win after he was struck in the left elbow by a fastball in Friday's 14-2 loss in the series opener, but the day off was apparently all the young catcher needed to overcome the soreness he had been experiencing. Since returning from the injured list June 11, Alvarez has slashed .338/.413/.600 with three home runs, 15 RBI and eight runs.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Homers again in loss

Alvarez went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Saturday's 8-1 loss to the Cubs. Alvarez's solo home run off Jameson Taillon in the fifth inning was the only run the Mets could muster Saturday. He later added a double in the seventh frame and walked in the ninth. Alvarez has homered on back-to-back days and has gone 10-for-19 with two long balls and six RBI over his past five contests. The young catcher is hitting .284 with three home runs and 16 RBI in 88 at-bats this season.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Three more hits Tuesday

Alvarez went 3-for-4 with a double and two RBI in Tuesday's win over the Rangers. The Mets' offense has suddenly roared to life, scoring 52 runs over the course of a seven-game win streak, and it's perhaps no coincidence that Alvarez returned from his thumb injury the day before the streak started. The 22-year-old backstop has delivered back-to-back three-hit performances, boosting his slash line on the season to .269/.305/.372 through 24 contests with a homer, nine runs and 14 RBI.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Activated from injured list

The Mets activated Alvarez (thumb) from the 10-day injured list Tuesday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Alvarez has been sidelined since late April with a fractured left thumb but is ready to roll after playing in six rehab games. It's possible the Mets will ease him back into everyday action with some extra off days mixed in, but he will immediately regain his role as the club's primary catcher. Alvarez was slashing .236/.288/.364 with one home run in 16 contests before getting hurt.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Return could be delayed

Alvarez (thumb) has flown back to his native Venezuela to tend to a family matter, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Alvarez had been set for activation June 11 upon the Mets' return home from London, but he might now be back a day or two later. The young catcher has been sidelined since April 20 with a fractured left thumb and has played five rehab games, going 3-for-14 with one home run.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Set to catch on consecutive days

Alvarez (thumb) will be behind the plate for Triple-A Syracuse on both Friday and Saturday before serving as the designated hitter Sunday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. The young catcher is on track to return from a fractured left thumb early next week when the Mets return from London, but the organization will put him through his paces this weekend to make sure he's ready. Alvarez caught a combined no-hitter with High-A Brooklyn on Tuesday, and he's drawn praise from coaches for the work he's put in during his rehab assignment. While his thumb will remain in a splint for a while yet, he should immediately slot back in as New York's starting catcher when he returns, although his backup -- whether that's Tomas Nido or Luis Torrens -- could still see a bigger workload in the short term as Alvarez gets eased back into action.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Looking good in batting practice

Alvarez (thumb) was reaching exit velocities over 100 miles per hour during batting practice over the weekend, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. The 22-year-old catcher is still wearing a splint on his surgically repaired thumb, however, and the Mets aren't going to rush him back from the 10-day injured list. The team may also use his recovery period to have him work on his positioning behind the plate, as Alvarez has a tendency to be overeager reaching for pitches and is susceptible to getting his glove hand smacked by a swing. Alvarez was batting .236 (13-for-55) with one home run and eight RBI through 16 games when he was injured in mid-April.

Alvarez (thumb) is set to participate in batting practice Saturday, Abbey Mastracco of the New York Daily News reports. Alvarez landed on the 10-day IL after tearing the UCL in his left thumb April 19, and the 22-year-old catcher is on track for a return by late June. Alvarez was slashing .236/.288/.364 with one home run and eight RBI over 59 plate appearances prior to his injury.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Hoping to take BP soon

The Mets are aiming for Alvarez (thumb) to begin taking batting practice during their upcoming homestand, which begins Friday and runs through June 2, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. It's been a month since Alvarez had surgery to address a torn UCL in his left thumb, and he's almost ready to pick up a bat as he advances his rehab. The catcher remains on track to return from the 10-day injured list in mid-to-late June.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Gets stitches removed

Alvarez had the stitches removed Monday from his surgically repaired left thumb, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Alvarez underwent surgery April 23 to address a torn UCL in the thumb on his glove hand. At the time his surgery was performed, the Mets estimated that Alvarez would need eight weeks to make a full recovery, so he appears unlikely to return from the injured list until around late June. A more precise target date for his return should come into focus once he resumes taking batting practice and performing defensive drills.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Undergoes thumb operation

Alvarez underwent surgery on his left thumb Tuesday, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. Alvarez was placed on the 10-day injured list Saturday with a torn UCL in his left thumb and he will now officially begin the road to recovery. The Mets said Tuesday that the catcher is expected to miss eight weeks of action while recovering from the surgery, which likely means that Alvarez will be on the shelf until late June. In the meantime, Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido will continue to split the work behind the plate for New York.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Set to have surgery

Alvarez will get surgery Tuesday for the torn UCL in his left thumb and expects to miss 6-to-8 weeks, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Alvarez sustained the thumb injury during Friday's game against the Dodgers after stumbling on his turn toward second base. He started the season slashing .236/.288/.364 with one home run and eight RBI over 59 plate appearances. Omar Narvaez and Tomas Nido will handle the catching duties while Alvarez is sidelined.

  • Mets' Francisco Alvarez: Getting more tests on left thumb

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza revealed Saturday that Alvarez is undergoing additional testing on his left thumb, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Alvarez was diagnosed with a left thumb sprain after undergoing an MRI following Friday's game against the Dodgers. The initial scan didn't reveal any ligament tear or break, but there is concern that there is more to the sprain, and Mendoza noted that Alvarez is expected to miss more than 10 days with the injury. While Alvarez continues to be evaluated, Omar Narvaez will serve as the Mets' top catcher while Tomas Nido fills in as the backup.
