Jung is expected to miss the next 8-to-10 weeks while on the mend from a broken right wrist, so this move simply clears a spot on the 40-man roster while he rehabs. Jung could return to action by the end of May if all goes according to plan.

Jung's initial timetable was estimated at six weeks following X-rays on the wrist, but unfortunately, he'll require more recovery time following a procedure that was more invasive than anticipated. The third baseman likely won't return until late May now in a best-case scenario and will be a candidate to move to the 60-day injured list at some point down the road. Josh Smith and Ezequiel Duran have both received a start at third base since Jung went down with the injury, and Justin Foscue is also an option at the hot corner.

Jung suffered the unfortunate injury when he was hit by a pitch in Monday's game against the Rays. There is no timetable for the 26-year-old's return at this point, but he will certainly be on the shelf for several weeks.
