Nationals' Andrew Alvarez: Takes tough loss Friday
Alvarez (2-4) took the loss Friday against the Mets after allowing two runs on two hits and one walk while striking out four over 5.2 innings.
Alvarez carried a one-hit shutout into the sixth inning before New York finally broke through. A two-out homer from Francisco Lindor and a wild pitch that allowed Bo Bichette to reach first -- and eventually score -- were enough to force Alvarez from the contest. Despite taking the loss, the lefty delivered an encouraging performance, allowing just two hits while throwing 47 of his 73 pitches for strikes. The 26-year-old has now allowed two earned runs or fewer in each of his last four starts, lowering his ERA to 3.72. He's lined up to make his next start on the road against the Rangers.

Nationals' Andrew Alvarez: Gives up one run in no-decision
Alvarez did not factor into the decision Saturday against the Reds, allowing one run on three hits and one walk while striking out two across 5.1 innings.
It wasn't a flashy performance by any means from Alvarez, but he managed to keep the Reds off the board through the first five innings. He was pulled in the sixth after yielding an infield single and was tagged for his lone run after Max Kranick gave up a two-run homer to Eugenio Suarez, which also removed Alvarez from the decision. Alvarez has yielded two earned runs or fewer in each of his last three outings and has a 3.76 ERA and 1.40 WHIP over 69.1 innings this season. His next start is lined up for next weekend on the road against the Mets.

Nationals' Andrew Alvarez: Sticking around in rotation
Alvarez is slated to start Saturday's game against the Reds at Nationals Park.
After being called up from Triple-A Rochester on Monday, Alvarez will wind up getting a two-start week. The 27-year-old southpaw delivered a quality start Monday against the Phillies with two earned runs allowed over 6.1 innings, and he's compiled a 3.94 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 63:31 K:BB over 64 innings through his first 16 appearances (eight starts) with Washington. Alvarez should have a good chance at sticking around in the rotation spot for the rest of the season after the Nationals designated right-hander Zack Littell for assignment earlier in the week.

Alvarez took a no-decision Monday against the Phillies, allowing two runs on three hits and three walks in 6.1 innings. He struck out five.
Alvarez was cruising along Monday, spinning six shutout frames initially, but a Derek Hill go-ahead grand slam off reliever Tom Cosgrove in the seventh inning took Alvarez out of position for the victory. It was still arguably the southpaw's best outing of the season, as Monday marked his first quality start so far. Alvarez should maintain a rotation spot until Connelly Early (elbow) is ready to make his Nationals debut, posting a 3.94 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 63:31 K:BB over 64 innings.

Nationals' Andrew Alvarez: Recalled to start Monday's game
The Nationals recalled Alvarez from Triple-A Rochester on Monday.
Alvarez will start Monday's game in Philadelphia. The left-hander had not made an appearance for Rochester after being sent there one week ago, so he'll be taking the ball Monday on six days' rest. Alvarez has logged a 4.06 ERA, 1.51 WHIP and 58:28 K:BB over seven starts and eight relief outings with the Nationals this season.

Nationals' Andrew Alvarez: Demoted to Triple-A
The Nationals optioned Alvarez to Triple-A Rochester following Monday's 3-2 loss to Toronto. He allowed one earned run on four hits and three walks while striking out three across 4.1 innings in bulk relief.
Alvarez put together a strong performance out of the bullpen, managing to keep his club in the ballgame after opener Eddy Yean allowed a pair of runs. However, the left-hander didn't show enough to keep his place on the big-league roster. Jake Irvin (shoulder) is nearing a return from the 60-day injured list and could slot into the fifth spot in the rotation the next time Alvarez's turn comes up.

Alvarez (2-1) picked up the win Wednesday, allowing two hits and a walk over 4.2 scoreless relief innings in a 10-2 rout of the Red Sox. He struck out six.
Entering the game in the third inning with the Nationals already up 2-0 after Brad Lord recorded the first seven outs as the opener, Alvarez kept the shutout going while tossing 74 pitches (46 strikes) in bulk relief. The 27-year-old southpaw has given up two runs or fewer in six straight trips to the mound since the beginning of June, producing a 2.45 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 31:11 K:BB across 25.2 innings during that stingy stretch. His next outing is set to come at home early next week against the Astros.

All five of Alvarez's appearances in June were traditional starts, but he's operated as a bulk reliever multiple times this season. Alvarez (1-1) took the loss Friday as the Nationals were downed 3-1 by the Orioles, giving up two runs on six hits and three walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out five.
The 27-year-old didn't pitch poorly, although he needed 88 pitches (53 strikes) to record 13 outs, but Alvarez didn't get much help as the Nats' offense was held in check by Trevor Rogers. Alvarez has yet to complete five innings in any of his 10 big-league appearances (five starts) this season, making him tough to roster in fantasy formats any time he gets a traditional start rather than working behind an opener, but over 21 innings in June he's produced a 3.00 ERA, 1.62 WHIP and 25:10 K:BB.

Alvarez turned in another effective start, with the lone run against him coming in the third inning when Tampa Bay strung together consecutive doubles. The left-hander set a season high with his six punchouts. After tossing 90 pitches in his June 9 start, Alvarez has been limited to under 70 in each of his last two starts. He has yet to complete five innings in any outing, limiting his chances to qualify for wins unless he's working behind an opener. Alvarez owns a 3.34 ERA, 1.39 WHIP and 37:12 K:BB across 32.1 innings and is lined up to face Baltimore on the road in his next outing.

It was somewhat surprising to see Alvarez, who threw a season-high 90 pitches his last time out, get pulled after tossing just 58 pitches (40 strikes) Monday, but the hurler was nonetheless highly effective. The 27-year-old southpaw has yet to pitch at least five innings in 2026, though he's still managed to fan at least five in five of his eight outings. Alvarez is next set to bring a 3.49 ERA, 1.45 WHIP and 31:12 K:BB over 28.1 frames into a tough road matchup in Tampa Bay.

Alvarez allowed two runs on five hits and five walks while striking out four over four-plus innings in a no-decision versus the Giants on Tuesday.
Alvarez had displayed fairly good control in his first six appearances this season, but he didn't deliver in that area Tuesday. Luckily for him, the Giants' offense didn't capitalize much against him -- the two runs on his line came when Brad Lord allowed both inherited runners to score in the fifth inning. Alvarez is now at a 3.70 ERA, 1.44 WHIP and 26:11 K:BB across 24.1 innings over seven appearances (two starts) in the majors this season. Maintaining his control will be critical for Alvarez to keep a spot in the rotation. His next start is tentatively projected to be at home versus the Royals.
