  • Rangers' Codi Heuer: Heads to Texas on MiLB deal

The Rangers signed Heuer to a minor-league contract Thursday.

Heuer has been a free agent since November after being non-tendered by the Cubs. He missed much of the 2023 season after fracturing his right elbow, but he'll return to action with Texas in the minors. Heuer's last appearance in the majors was in 2021 when he split time between the Cubs and White Sox.

  • Codi Heuer: Non-tendered by Cubs

Heuer (elbow) became a free agent Friday after being non-tendered by the Cubs.

Heuer hasn't appeared in a major-league game since 2021 and is on the mend from June surgery to repair a fracture in his right elbow. The 27-year-old will seek out a fresh start on the open market.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Month away from throwing

Heuer (elbow) is slated to begin a throwing program in mid-November, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Heuer had surgery to repair a fractured right elbow in late June and has completed the initial healing and range of motion phase of his recovery. The next step will be throwing, which will begin in about a month. There is no timetable for Heuer's return, but he would seem to have a good shot to be ready for Opening Day in 2024 if he can progress without setbacks.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Out for season

Heuer underwent surgery on his fractured right elbow Friday and is out for the rest of the season, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Heuer was in the process of working his way back from Tommy John surgery when he suffered another injury in his elbow during a rehab assignment. He has not pitched in the majors since 2021, and now he will have to wait until 2024 for his next opportunity.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Suffers arm injury on rehab

Heuer (elbow) was removed from his latest rehab appearance Tuesday with Triple-A Iowa due to an apparent arm injury, Paul Sullivan of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Heuer is working his way back from March 2022 Tommy John surgery, but it's unclear if he suffered an aggravation with his elbow or if he's tending to a new injury. Before his early departure Tuesday, Heuer had largely struggled over a rehab assignment that began at Iowa in early May, posting a 7.82 ERA, 2.05 WHIP and 15:11 K:BB in 12.2 innings over 15 appearances.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Set for another rehab outing

Heuer (elbow) will pitch Tuesday at Triple-A Iowa, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Heuer is set for another rehab appearance as he continues his recovery from Tommy John surgery. It's unclear if this will be his last minor-league action prior to being activated from the 60-day injured list, though the next steps should become more clear after Tuesday's outing.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Another rehab outing Tuesday

Heuer (elbow) will make another rehab appearance Tuesday with Triple-A Iowa, Tony Andracki of Marquee Sports Network reports.

This could be one of the final tests for Heuer, who struggled in the early part of his minor-league rehab stint but tallied two strikeouts over 1.1 hitless innings this past Saturday versus the Triple-A affiliate of the Brewers. He worked 1.2 scoreless frames for Iowa last Wednesday. The 26-year-old reliever is on the long road back from Tommy John surgery.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Another rehab outing this week

Heuer (elbow) is on track for another rehab outing this week with Triple-A Iowa, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Heuer has struggled mightily on the farm so far, yielding seven earned runs on six hits and six walks through 4.2 innings. He's on the 60-day IL, so the Cubs can slow play the final steps of his recovery from Tommy John surgery until they see better results. There's no exact timetable for his activation.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Continuing rehab at Triple-A

Heuer (elbow) is scheduled for a third minor-league rehab appearance Friday with Triple-A Iowa, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports.

Heuer struggled in his rehab debut Saturday with Iowa before striking out two of three batters he faced in his second rehab outing Tuesday. The 26-year-old reliever is on the long road back from Tommy John surgery and should be an option for the Cubs' bullpen at the end of this month. He's on the 60-day IL and isn't eligible for activation until May 29.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Starting rehab assignment

Heuer (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Iowa on Saturday, Jordan Bastian of MLB.com reports.

It will be the first game action for Heuer since he underwent Tommy John surgery last March. Because he's missed so much time, a lengthy rehab assignment figures to be in order. He could eventually work his way into high-leverage relief spots for the Cubs.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Throws simulated game

Heuer (elbow) threw a 25-pitch simulated game Wednesday, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Heuer said he felt good during and after the workout and added that he's lined up for another simulated game in the next few days. Nearing the end of his recovery from Tommy John surgery, which he underwent last March, the 26-year-old reliever should be an option for the Cubs in the early part of the summer.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Throwing simulated game

Heuer (elbow) will throw a one-inning simulated game at the Cubs' spring training complex in Arizona on Saturday, Ryan Herrera of AllCHGO.com reports.

Heuer continues chugging along in his rehab from Tommy John surgery. The beginning of a rehab assignment would seem to be around the corner, although there's no date for that yet.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Scheduled for live BP on Tuesday

Heuer (elbow) will throw a one-inning live batting practice Tuesday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.

After undergoing Tommy John surgery back in March 2022, Heuer continues to progress through the rehab process and has now been cleared to face hitters. He still has a ways to go and will likely require a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment, but he remains on track to return around mid-June.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Shuttled to 60-day IL

The Cubs placed Heuer (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Monday, Sahadev Sharma of The Athletic reports.

Heuer was already expected to be sidelined until around mid-season while he recovers from March 2022 Tommy John surgery, so his move to the 60-day IL is merely a formality that opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for newly signed reliever Michael Fulmer. If Heuer is able to regain velocity and command once he concludes what will likely be an extended rehab assignment in the minors, he could emerge as a key late-inning arm for the big club in the second half of the season. At this stage of Heuer's rehab, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times relays that the right-hander is throwing bullpen sessions, but he's not yet been cleared to face hitters.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Could start year on 60-day IL

Heuer (elbow) might begin the season on the 60-day injured list, Andy Martinez of Marquee Sports Network reports.

Heuer is coming up on the one-year anniversary of his Tommy John surgery, so him getting a late start to the season was expected. The right-hander doesn't figure to be ready to join the Cubs' bullpen until at least June or so, and even after his return the team will likely be careful with his workload.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Avoids arbitration

Heuer (elbow) and the Cubs agreed on a one-year, $785,000 contract Friday to avoid arbitration, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.

The right-hander missed the entirety of the 2022 campaign after undergoing Tommy John surgery in early March and he will look to make his return to the mound in 2023. Heuer last pitched in 2021, producing a 4.28 ERA and 1.31 WHIP with 56 strikeouts over 67.1 innings in 65 appearances between the White Sox and Cubs.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Shuttled to 60-day IL

The Cubs placed Heuer (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday.

In a corresponding move, the Cubs announced the signing of veteran reliever David Robertson, who will take Heuer's spot in the bullpen and on the 40-man roster. Heuer will miss the entire 2022 season and, likely, a large portion of the 2023 campaign after he underwent Tommy John surgery earlier this month.

  • Cubs' Codi Heuer: Undergoes arm surgery

Heuer announced Tuesday via his personal Instagram account that he underwent an unspecified arm surgery this week.

Until it becomes clear exactly what procedure Heuer underwent, it's difficult to say when he'll be back. If he underwent Tommy John surgery, he'll definitely miss all of the upcoming season as well as a substantial portion of 2023, though a lesser procedure could still give him a chance to return this year. Heuer had looked like one of the top alternatives to presumed closer Rowan Wick, but Wick's job now appears to be comparatively safe. Brad Wieck and Manuel Rodriguez look like Wick's main competition for now.
