Dodgers' Matt Gage: Joins 40-man roster
The Dodgers added Gage to their 40-man roster Wednesday, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Gage exercised an opt-out clause in his minor-league contract Wednesday, but he'll instead remain with the organization now that he owns a spot on the 40-man. The 31-year-old southpaw will remain in Triple-A, however, where he's posted a 2.79 ERA and 1.31 WHIP in 19.1 innings this season. J.P. Feyereisen was outrighted to Oklahoma City in a corresponding move.

Gage had been designated for assignment and the Dodgers have decided to cut him loose after he cleared waivers. The left-handed reliever holds a 1.83 ERA and 20:9 K:BB across 19.2 innings in the majors, so he shouldn't have trouble latching on in another organization.

Dodgers' Matt Gage: Designated for assignment
Gage was designated for assignment by the Dodgers on Tuesday, Bill Plunkett of The Orange County Register reports.
The move frees up a spot on the 40-man roster for waiver claim Taylor Trammell. Gage was acquired via trade from the Yankees in February but did not make the Opening Day roster. He holds a 1.83 ERA and 20:9 K:BB across 19.2 innings in the majors, so there could be some interest via trade or waivers.

Dodgers' Matt Gage: Optioned to Triple-A
Gage was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City on Sunday, Kirsten Watson of SportsNet LA reports.
Gage appeared in four games with the Dodgers this spring, allowing two runs on three hits while striking out four batters over four innings. The southpaw pitched in five games with the Astros in 2023, producing a 2.70 ERA with eight strikeouts over 6.2 innings, and he'll look to earn a call-up to the major-league roster with Los Angeles down the road.

Dodgers' Matt Gage: Shipped to Dodgers
The Dodgers acquired Gage and right-hander Christian Zazueta from the Yankees on Monday in exchange for left-hander Caleb Ferguson, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports.
Though Ferguson is a more established left-handed reliever at the big-league level, he's bound for free agency in 2025 and has no minor-league options remaining, while Gage is a pre-arbitration pitcher who still has an option. Gage isn't expected to be a vital part of the Los Angeles bullpen in 2024, but he'll at least help restore some left-handed depth to the relief ranks while also offering more maneuverability between the majors and Triple-A Oklahoma City. Over his 16 career big-league appearances over the past two seasons between Toronto and Houston, the 30-year-old Gage owns a 1.83 ERA (3.74 SIERA) over 19.2 innings.

Astros' Matt Gage: Optioned to Triple-A
The Astros optioned Gage to Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports.
He was called up Sunday to take the place of Ryne Stanek as he went on the bereavement list. Gage made two appearances during his brief stint, throwing 2.2 scoreless innings while striking out three batters and walking one. His solid, if brief, MLB track record isn't consistent with his performance in the minors this season (6.59 ERA, 2.05 WHIP), but Gage still figures to be on the short list of potential bullpen reinforcements for Houston later this season.

With Luis Garcia (elbow) landing on the 15-day injured list Tuesday, Gage will be brought up to the majors to fill Garcia's roster spot. Gage had quite a bit of success in the majors last season with Toronto, posting a 1.38 ERA and 0.92 WHIP across 13 innings. Astros' Matt Gage: Moves to Triple-A
The Astros optioned Gage to Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday, Chandler Rome of the Houston Chronicle reports.
The southpaw pitched well this spring, allowing just one run with a 6:1 K:BB over six innings, but he nonetheless finds himself on the outside looking in for a roster spot. With Gage headed to the minors, that means the Astros will open the regular season with no left-handers in their bullpen.

Astros' Matt Gage: Headed for bullpen role
Gage will likely start the regular season as a member of the Astros' bullpen, Matt Young of The Houston Chronicle reports.
Gage was picked up by the Astros in mid-February, and he'll benefit from the absences of Parker Mushinski (back) and Blake Taylor (elbow) -- both of whom have yet to enter game action this spring. Without that duo, the Astros will be without a lefty in their bullpen, thus opening the door for Gage to claim a roster spot. He made his big-league debut with Toronto in 2022 and maintained a 1.38 ERA and 0.92 WHIP across 13 innings.
