Reds' Rhett Lowder: Confirmed for start Sunday
Reds manager Terry Francona confirmed Wednesday that Lowder (shoulder) will be reinstated from the injured list to start Sunday's game in St. Louis, Charlie Clifford of NBC 5 Cincinnati reports.
Francona indicated previously that Lowder would rejoin the Reds' rotation for Sunday's series finale as long as he got through Tuesday's rehab start at Triple-A Louisville without any hiccups. That happened, as the righty had an 8:0 K:BB over five innings while yielding three runs. Lowder threw 70 pitches on Tuesday, so he will not be fully stretched out against the Cardinals. The right-hander has been sidelined since early May due to right shoulder discomfort.

Reds' Rhett Lowder: Throws 70 pitches in rehab start
Lowder (shoulder) allowed three runs on six hits while striking out eight with no walks over five innings in a rehab start for Triple-A Louisville on Tuesday.
After appearing in a simulated game last week, Lowder kicked off a rehab assignment in impressive fashion, throwing 70 pitches (50 strikes). It's unclear what the right-hander's next step is, but the innings and the pitch count set him up for a possible return to Cincinnati's rotation in five days.

Lowder threw a successful live batting practice session Wednesday, clearing the way for him to pitch in an official game. Lowder was forced to exit his start last Thursday with right shoulder trouble and was subsequently given an injection in the AC joint. He does not have any structural damage, so Lowder has a chance to return soon, but it will depend on how he does after he's cleared to ramp up throwing again. Chris Paddack was signed to take Lowder's roster spot and should also hold down a slot in the rotation while Lowder is out.

Lowder was removed in the fourth inning of Thursday's game with right shoulder discomfort. Lowder was able to make it through three innings Thursday, giving up one earned run on a solo homer from Michael Conforto. Reds' Rhett Lowder: Sunk by Bucs
Lowder (3-2) took the loss Saturday, surrendering eight runs on five hits and four walks over just 1.1 innings in a 17-7 rout at the hands of the Pirates. He struck out one.
In the shortest outing of his brief career, Lowder threw only 25 of 52 pitches for strikes and got the hook after walking three straight batters in the second inning, only to see Connor Phillips then issue free passes to the next four Pittsburgh hitters. Lowder had lasted at least five innings in each of his first six starts this season, but the disastrous outing ballooned his ERA from 3.18 to 5.09. The 24-year-old righty will try to rebound in his next trip to the mound, which is scheduled to come on the road next week against the Cubs.

Reds' Rhett Lowder: Overcomes slow start
Lowder did not factor into Sunday's decision against the Tigers. He allowed two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out seven across five innings.
Lowder put the Reds on the back foot early after giving up a two-run double to Kerry Carpenter in the first inning. Lowder managed to settle in thereafter, keeping the Tigers off the board over the next four frames before exiting the game with the Reds up 3-2, but he did not come away with the win after Detroit scored six runs over the seventh and eighth innings. Lowder has given up two earned runs or less in four of his first six starts of the season, and he sits at a 3.18 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 25:10 K:BB across 34 innings. He's lined up to start next week on the road against the Pirates.

Reds' Rhett Lowder: Earns win in quality start
Lowder (2-1) earned the win Wednesday against the Giants, allowing three runs on five hits and one walk while striking out four over 6.2 innings.
Lowder ran into trouble in the second inning, allowing three straight baserunners, capped by a two-run double from Daniel Susac, but Lowder settled in well after that, tossing four straight scoreless frames. The 24-year-old found himself running into traffic again in the seventh, when he exited with runners at the corners, and one inherited runner later came around to score. Despite the late blemish, Lowder delivered another strong outing and has now posted quality starts in two of his last three appearances. Through 23 innings, the right-hander owns a 3.52 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and a 15:7 K:BB, with a road matchup against Tampa Bay on deck.
