Once Drake Baldwin got out of Mississippi (the worst Double-A park to hit in), his season took off. He slashed .298/.407/.484 with 12 homers and almost as many walks (52) as strikeouts (54) in 72 games at Triple-A. Baldwin followed that up with a .377/.452/.491 triple-slash and a 9:8 K:BB in 13 Arizona Fall League games. Baldwin showed last year that his command of the zone and bat-to-ball ability (79.7 Contact%) are pretty elite relative to most upper-level catchers. This helped lead to a 32.6 percent hard-hit rate and a 16.3 percent soft-hit rate, which are excellent marks for any minor-league hitter. With Travis d'Arnaud moving on, Baldwin is a clear top-two catcher on Atlanta's organizational depth chart from a talent standpoint, as of late November. Chadwick Tromp is still on the 40-man roster and is out of options, but Baldwin is a better overall player and should spend most or all of 2025 in the big leagues. Sean Murphy is coming off his worst full big-league season, and whether he can bounce back and handle 100-plus games will greatly impact Baldwin's output.

  • Braves' Drake Baldwin: Cracks Opening Day roster

Atlanta selected Baldwin's contract from Triple-A Gwinnett on Friday. The news does not come as a surprise, as it's been pretty clear Atlanta was planning for Baldwin to be its primary catcher while Sean Murphy (rib) is sidelined. Murphy is expected to miss at least the first couple weeks of the season, although there's no clear target date for his return yet. Baldwin has batted .313 (10-for-32) with a 2:7 K:BB this spring after posting a .276/.370/.423 slash line with 18 home runs between Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett in 2024. He could be optioned to Gwinnett once Murphy is ready but will have an opportunity to show he deserves to stick around.

  • Braves' Drake Baldwin: Recovered from allergic reaction

Baldwin is fine Friday after being scratched from Wednesday's Grapefruit League lineup due to an allergic reaction, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. The 23-year-old had an accidental exposure to walnuts but has since recovered from the allergic reaction. Baldwin is Atlanta's top prospect and has yet to make his MLB debut, but that could change soon with No. 1 backstop Sean Murphy (rib) set to begin the season on the injured list. Justin Toscano of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution projects Baldwin to be the team's Opening Day starter behind the plate.

  • Braves' Drake Baldwin: Scratched due to allergies

Baldwin was scratched from Atlanta's lineup for Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Orioles due to an allergic reaction. Atlanta describes Baldwin's removal from the lineup as precautionary, so the young backstop can be considered day-to-day moving forward. With Sean Murphy (rib) set to begin the season on the injured list, Baldwin remains the leading candidate to serve as Atlanta's Opening Day catcher.

  • Braves' Drake Baldwin: Nets invite to spring training

Atlanta has extended Baldwin an invitation to big-league camp during spring training. Baldwin slashed .276/.370/.423 with 18 home runs between Double-A Mississippi and Triple-A Gwinnett in 2024 and is viewed by most as the club's top prospect. While Sean Murphy should have a clear placement at the top of the catcher depth chart in Atlanta heading into the 2025 season, the absence of Travis d'Arnaud gives Baldwin a clearer path to debut sooner rather than later.

  • Braves' Drake Baldwin: In control at Triple-A

Baldwin is slashing .297/.412/.479 with 11 home runs and more walks (47) than strikeouts (45) in 62 games for Triple-A Gwinnett. Baldwin's 31.2 percent hard-hit rate, 80 percent contact rate and 15.6 percent strikeout rate are all high-end marks for an upper-level catching prospect. Atlanta has an $8 million club option on Travis d'Arnaud for 2025, while Sean Murphy is locked up long term, so it's unclear how large Baldwin's role will be in 2025.

  • Braves' Drake Baldwin: Shifted to minors camp

Baldwin was reassigned to Atlanta's minor-league camp Tuesday. The 2022 third-round draft selection slashed .247/.396/.284 across 101 plate appearances last season. The 21-year-old backstop will likely remain in Single-A to begin 2023.
