  • Padres' Alek Jacob: Returns to minors

The Padres optioned Jacob to Triple-A El Paso on Sunday. Jacob has been up with San Diego all season and had been pitching decently with a 3.34 ERA through 20 appearances, but he surrendered 10 earned runs over his past two outings, including four runs Saturday in Atlanta. The right-hander will head to the minors in favor of Omar Cruz, who will bolster the Padres' bullpen depth.

  • Padres' Alek Jacob: Hit hard in relief outing

Jacob allowed seven runs (six earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out one batter over two-thirds of an inning versus Toronto on Wednesday. When Jacob entered with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning, the Padres were still hanging around despite a 4-0 deficit. The righty reliever allowed two inherited runners plus one of his own to cross the plate before getting the final out in that frame, then allowed six straight hitters to reach (one on an error) without getting an out in the eighth before being pulled with San Diego down 12-0. Jacob held a 2.75 ERA through his first 18 appearances, but he's given up multiple runs in two of his past three outings as his ERA has more than doubled to 5.82. He's a non-factor in fantasy due to a low-leverage role (he has just two holds and no saves across his 21 total appearances) and a low strikeout rate (6.6 K/9).

  • Padres' Alek Jacob: Impressive in relief outing

Jacob struck out two batters in a perfect inning in relief against Colorado on Friday. Jacob closed out the contest for San Diego, pitching the ninth inning in the 8-0 win. He was efficient and effective, throwing 11 of his 15 pitches for strikes. Friday snapped a string of three straight relief outings in which Jacob worked over one inning, though he hasn't gone past two frames in an appearance this year. He's off the fantasy radar since he's not frequently used in high-leverage situations and doesn't have big strikeout stuff, but Jacob has held his own so far this season with a 3.12 ERA, 1.38 WHIP and 5:3 K:BB over 8.2 innings.

  • Padres' Alek Jacob: Added to roster for NLDS

Jacob has a spot on the Padres' roster for the National League Division Series against the Dodgers. Jacob was optioned to Triple-A El Paso in late September, though that came after the minor-league season had concluded. The righty reliever spent most of the campaign with El Paso but logged seven appearances over two stints with San Diego, posting a 2.45 ERA, 0.75 WHIP and 19:2 K:BB over 14.2 innings. Jacob pitched more than one inning in five of the seven outings and topped out at 3.2 frames against Tampa Bay on Aug. 31.

  • Padres' Alek Jacob: Dispatched to Triple-A

The Padres optioned Jacob to Triple-A El Paso on Saturday. After returning to the majors at the end of August, Jacob allowed three earned runs over 8.1 innings across three appearances, though he hadn't pitched in a game since Sept. 14. He'll now head back to the minors as the Padres sacrifice some of their bullpen depth to bring back Randy Vasquez, who will start Saturday's game against the Diamondbacks.

  • Padres' Alek Jacob: Rejoins MLB bullpen

The Padres recalled Jacob from Triple-A El Paso on Saturday. Jacob has allowed one earned run in 6.1 frames with the Padres this season, though he's posted a 5.14 ERA in seven innings since being sent back to the minors Aug. 8. Nonetheless, he'll rejoin the big-league squad to give the bullpen an additional fresh arm, taking the place of Sean Reynolds.

  • Padres' Alek Jacob: Moves back to minors

The Padres optioned Jacob to Triple-A El Paso on Thursday. Jacob struck out three and gave up a hit over a scoreless 22-pitch inning of relief in Wednesday's loss to the Pirates. Though Jacob likely would have been available for Thursday's series finale in Pittsburgh, the San Diego bullpen as a whole had been used heavily of late, so he was the odd man out as the Padres called up a fresh long-relief arm in Carl Edwards from El Paso.

  • Padres' Alek Jacob: Recalled from El Paso

The Padres recalled Jacob from Triple-A El Paso on Saturday. Jacob has spent the entire season with El Paso, putting up a 5.59 ERA and 1.88 WHIP through 46.2 innings. Despite his lackluster performance, he'll be called upon to provide San Diego's bullpen with a fresh arm, replacing Adam Mazur on the active roster.

  • Padres' Alek Jacob: Out with elbow inflammation

Jacob was placed on the 15-day injured list with right elbow inflammation Saturday. The move was backdated to Friday, so Jacob could return as soon as Aug. 12 if his inflammation has subsided by then. In three appearances during his brief time with the team, Jacob struck out five of the 10 batters he faced while not allowing a run or a hit. Jacob's roster spot will go to Jackson Wolf, whose contract was selected ahead of his big-league debut.

  • Padres' Alek Jacob: Arrives in majors

The Padres selected Jacob's contract from Double-A San Antonio on Friday, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Jacob fell to the 16th round of the 2021 MLB Draft following a four-year NCAA career at Gonzaga, but he's done nothing but dominate minor-league hitters to the tune of a 1.82 ERA and 138:25 K:BB in 104 professional innings. The 25-year-old right-hander could prove to be a weapon in relief for the Padres as he completes his swift ascent to the big leagues.

  • Padres' Alek Jacob: Debuts at Double-A

Jacob (shoulder) was assigned to Double-A San Antonio on April 19 and has since made two relief appearances for the affiliate, giving up one earned run on two hits and two walks while striking out three over two innings. Jacob's season debut was slightly delayed while he worked his way back from a right shoulder injury. The 24-year-old right-hander is one of the better relief prospects in the San Diego system and is coming off a 2022 campaign in which he submitted a 2.68 ERA while striking out 77 over 57 innings across stops with three affiliates.

  • Padres' Alek Jacob: Out with shoulder injury

Jacob is out with a right shoulder injury, Sam Dykstra of MLB.com reports. A 24-year-old righty reliever, Jacob had a 2.68 ERA, 1.12 WHIP and 77 strikeouts in 57 innings across stops in the three highest levels of the minors last year. If he is able to get healthy, he would probably be assigned to Double-A or Triple-A.
