Diamondbacks' Jose Castillo: Dropped from 40-man roster
The Diamondbacks designated Castillo for assignment Monday.
Castillo will lose his spot in the Arizona bullpen with the Diamondbacks activating right-hander Kendall Graveman (back) from the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. After getting called up from Triple-A Reno on May 1, Castillo filled a low-leverage relief role and gave up eight earned runs on 10 hits and three walks in 6.1 innings across five appearances. The 29-year-old lefty is likely to clear waivers and will have the option of either accepting an outright assignment to Reno or electing free agency.

Diamondbacks' Jose Castillo: Added to roster
The Diamondbacks selected Castillo's contract from Triple-A Reno on Thursday.
Castillo got a late start to the season with Reno due to an adductor injury, but he made five appearances there and allowed just one run with a 7:0 K:BB over 5.1 innings. The left-hander missed much of 2024 with a hand injury, and when he makes an appearance, it will be his first in the majors since 2023.

Diamondbacks' Jose Castillo: Debuts for Triple-A club
Castillo (hand) has given up three earned runs on five hits and no walks while striking out two batters over 2.2 innings in three appearances since being reinstated from Triple-A Reno's 7-day injured list July 19.
Castillo opened the season on Reno's IL after suffering a hand injury in spring training. He began a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League in late May, but he was pulled off the assignment after just one appearance. It's unclear if Castillo experienced a setback with the hand injury or was contending with a new injury, but he was cleared to resume the rehab assignment six weeks later before he finally got the green light to join the Triple-A club. Castillo has previously made 40 relief appearances at the big-league level from 2018 through 2023, but he looks to be a long ways away from getting a look in the Arizona bullpen.

Castillo was struck in the hand by a comebacker during a Cactus League appearance Saturday, but he's managed to escape with just a contusion.
