Player Outlook
The Guardians' big-league outfield is light on offensive impact potential, but that will change when Chase DeLauter gets the call. The No. 16 overall pick in 2022, DeLauter broke his left foot midway through his junior year with James Madison and then broke a toe on that same foot during his rehab, so he didn't make his pro debut until June of 2023. He quickly made up for lost time, slashing .355/.417/.528 with five home runs, 22 doubles and six steals in 57 games across rookie ball, High-A and Double-A, with the bulk of those at-bats coming at High-A. A hulking 6-foot-4, 235-pound outfielder who can currently handle all three spots, DeLauter added to his 2023 ledger with a .299/.385/.529 line, five home runs and more walks than strikeouts in 23 Arizona Fall League games. Given his size and the physical nature of his game, it's a bit concerning that he has suffered multiple fractures on the same foot at this stage of his career, but DeLauter has looked like the best player on the field in most of the games he's played in over the past few years. He had 11 steals on 15 attempts in his 80 games last year, so while his speed should trend down in the coming years, DeLauter could be a five-category contributor in his early-20s. Despite the fact he only played six games at Double-A, DeLauter will likely look big-league ready early in 2024, so he's a viable high-upside flyer in draft-and-hold leagues.

  • Guardians' Chase DeLauter: Opening year at Double-A

DeLauter will open the year with Double-A Akron, Jim Callis of MLB.com reports. Despite logging a 1.640 OPS in 25 spring at-bats and a .914 OPS in 87 at-bats in the Arizona Fall League, DeLauter will be given a soft assignment to Akron, which is where he finished the 2023 season. Injuries have limited DeLauter to 80 pro games (including the AFL) since getting drafted in 2022, but he could force a quick promotion to Triple-A Columbus if he meets expectations.

  • Guardians' Chase DeLauter: Done playing in big-league ST games

DeLauter will not play in any more big-league spring training games this season, manager Stephen Vogt told Christopher Dellacese of 19 News. DeLauter was in minor-league camp but was able to make 30 plate appearances with the big club this spring, slashing .520/.600/1.040 with four home runs and more walks (five) than strikeouts (four). He will likely head to Double-A or Triple-A as a 22-year-old and could be up playing on an everyday basis for the big club sometime in the first half.

  • Guardians' Chase DeLauter: Making impact in spring

DeLauter has gone 4-for-8 with a solo home run and two runs scored over five Cactus League games. DeLauter is smashing the ball in spring, but it's unlikely he completely skips Triple-A, especially since he has just six games at Double-A under his belt. It seems likely the outfielder will begin the year with Double-A Akron, and he's a good bet to advance to Triple-A Columbus in the summer.

  • Guardians' Chase DeLauter: Promoted to Double-A

DeLauter has been promoted from High-A Lake County to Double-A Akron, Guardians Prospective reports. The No. 16 overall pick in the 2022 Draft, DeLauter recovered from an ankle injury to hit a blistering .366/.403/.549 for Lake County over 42 games. Akron has just one series remaining this season, but the Guardians wanted to give the top prospect a quick look at a higher level before the schedule runs out.

  • Guardians' Chase DeLauter: Returns to action for Lake County

DeLauter (ankle) started in right field and went 1-for-4 with a double and two RBI in his return to the lineup for High-A Lake County in Friday's 5-4 win over Beloit. DeLauter was sidelined for about a week and a half with a left ankle sprain but was never placed on the 7-day injured list. The 21-year-old opened the season on Lake County's 60-day IL, but he's produced an outstanding 1.201 OPS in 12 games for the affiliate since he was activated June 29 after completing a rehab assignment in the rookie-level Arizona Complex League.
