Mets' Jose Butto: Notches first save of season
Butto earned a save against the Dodgers on Monday, retiring both batters he faced in the 10th inning.
Mets closer Edwin Diaz blew a save in the ninth frame, so New York needed to go to a different reliever after scoring twice in the top of the 10th. Manager Carlos Mendoza initially called upon Jose Castillo, but he retired just one batter while allowing two Dodgers to reach base. Mendoza then turned to Butto, who got pinch hitter Will Smith to fly out before retiring Tommy Edman on a groundout with the tying run on third base. Butto came into Monday having given up four runs over four innings across his previous four outings, and he's not a threat to Diaz's role as closer, especially since the latter has been great this season -- Monday marked Diaz's first blown save of the campaign.

Mets' Jose Butto: Available in relief Monday
Butto (groin) is listed as an available relief option for Monday's Grapefruit League game against the Rays, Manny Gomez of NJ.com reports.
Butto hasn't made any appearances since March 7 while tending to a minor groin injury, but after throwing a bullpen session over the weekend without issue, he looks like he'll be incorporated into the Mets' spring pitching schedule Monday. The 26-year-old right-hander should have an inside track on a spot in New York's Opening Day bullpen after submitting a 2.55 ERA and 1.07 WHIP while striking out 79 batters over 74 innings during the regular season in 2024.

Mets' Jose Butto: Managing groin issue
Butto has been sitting out due to a minor groin injury but is scheduled to throw a bullpen session Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports.
The right-hander made four appearances in spring training prior to the injury and gave up a run on three hits with three strikeouts and two walks over 3.2 innings. Assuming Butto is able to avoid a setback, it doesn't appear the injury will affect his availability for Opening Day.

Mets' Jose Butto: Staying in bullpen
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Butto will remain in the team's bullpen, Tim Healey of Newsday reports.
Butto made seven starts for the Mets in 2024 and has been a starter throughout his time in the minors, but he found his niche in the bullpen down the stretch last season, collecting a 2.00 ERA and 41:17 K:BB over 36 regular-season innings. The righty will be tasked with getting some key outs in a setup role.

Mets' Jose Butto: Notches save Saturday
Butto earned a save against the White Sox on Saturday, allowed one run on three hits in one inning.
The Mets held a three-run lead heading into the bottom of the ninth inning and turned to Butto to close things down. The right-hander didn't cruise, giving up a run on a trio of hits and allowing the tying run to reach first base, but he was ultimately successful in converting his third save of the campaign. Butto isn't a threat to Edwin Diaz's job as closer; Diaz was simply unavailable after pitching on three straight days.

Mets' Jose Butto: Nabs sixth win
Butto (6-3) picked up the win Thursday, walking one batter in a scoreless inning of relief.
The right-hander threw only nine of 20 pitches for strikes but escaped the eighth inning unscathed to protect a 2-2 tie, and Butto became the pitcher of record when the Mets went ahead in the top of the ninth. He's had trouble finding the plate consistently for a couple weeks now, and Butto has walked at least one batter in six straight appearances, posting a 4.32 ERA, 1.92 WHIP and 9:7 K:BB in 8.1 innings over that stretch. Given the injuries in the Mets' bullpen, however, Butto will likely continue to be deployed in high-leverage spots.
