The Phillies reassigned Machin to minor-league camp Thursday.
Machin logged 253 plate appearances at the big-league level with an 102-loss Oakland squad in 2022, but he'll have a tougher time earning reps in the majors with a Phillies team that fancies itself as World Series contenders. Phillies' Vimael Machin: Reaches deal with Phils
Machin and the Phillies agreed Wednesday on a minor-league contract, Melissa Lockard of The Athletic reports.
Machin's deal presumably includes an invitation to big-league spring training that will enable him to compete for a bench spot on the Phillies' Opening Day roster. The 29-year-old played almost exclusively at third base for Oakland in 2022, logging 253 plate appearances and slashing .220/.300/.287 with a 10.1 percent walk rate and an 18.6 percent strikeout rate.

Machin elected free agency on Tuesday after being designated for assignment by the Athletics.
After being booted off Oakland's 40-man roster following the trade that sent Sean Murphy to Atlanta, Machin decided to test his luck in the open market rather than attempt to re-earn his spot. After the A's executed a trade on Monday in which they received a total of five players from Atlanta and Milwaukee, Machin had to be DFA'd in order to make room on the club's 40-man roster. The 29-year-old infielder slashed .328/.404/.461 in Triple-A Las Vegas last season. Repeated success in the minors could earn him a spot on the 40-man roster once again.
