Player Outlook
Xzavion Curry served as a long man and occasional spot starter for the Guardians last season, covering 95 innings in 41 appearances (nine starts). The results were a mixed bag as Curry thrived at home (2.98 ERA) but struggled away from Progressive Field (5.53 ERA). He had major issues with same-side pitching. While the right-hander showed some promise in relief, he does not possess the stuff to project as a back-of-the-bullpen arm. His breaking pitches are OK, but Curry averaged just 92.5 mph on his fastball last season, with a 16.6 K%. Chances are, the 25-year-old will do a lot of mopping up until he shows he's worthy of more important innings.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Stays in rotation

Curry is scheduled to start Sunday's game against the Phillies at Citizens Bank Park. Curry will make his second straight turn through the rotation after he previously picked up his fourth start of the season with the Guardians -- and his first since May 27 -- on Tuesday against the Tigers. Since he had been building up as a starter at Triple-A Columbus prior to getting plugged into the big-league rotation coming out of the All-Star break, Curry had light workload limitations in place Tuesday, when he took a no-decision after giving up two earned runs over 4.1 innings and 62 pitches. Curry should be capable of working deeper into Sunday's contest, though it will be contingent on him keeping a potent Phillies lineup at bay.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Goes 4.1 innings in start

Curry didn't factor into the decision in Tuesday's 5-4 win over the Tigers, allowing two runs on four hits and one walk over 4.1 innings. He struck out one batter. Curry held Detroit off the board through his first three innings before surrendering a two-run homer to Wenceel Perez in the fourth. The 25-year-old Curry's logged a mediocre 4.98 ERA over 21.2 innings in the majors this season with a 1.25 WHIP and 13:4 K:BB, though he was impressive with Triple-A Columbus while posting a 2.21 ERA in his last four minor-league outings. Curry could remain in the Guardians rotation until Matthew Boyd (elbow) is ready to to be activated from the injured list. Curry currently lines up for a tough road matchup with the Phillies this weekend.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Joining rotation Tuesday

Curry is slated to start Tuesday's game against the Tigers in Cleveland. Curry will enter the rotation as a replacement for Spencer Howard, who took the hill the last time the Guardians required a fifth starter July 11. Howard has since been designated for assignment, but Curry may prove to be just a stopgap in the rotation until Matthew Boyd (elbow) returns from the injured list, or until the Guardians see enough improvement at Triple-A Columbus from struggling starters Triston McKenzie or Logan Allen to bring either back to the big leagues. Curry has previously made three starts for Cleveland this season, turning in a 5.68 ERA and 8:3 K:BB in 12.2 innings over those outings.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Back in bigs

The Guardians recalled Curry from Triple-A Columbus on Friday. Curry will join the active roster in place of Sam Hentges (shoulder), who's been placed on the injured list. Curry has logged a 5.74 ERA across 15.2 innings with the Guardians this season.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Optioned to Triple-A

The Guardians optioned Curry to Triple-A Columbus on Thursday. Curry took the loss out of the bullpen for the Guardians on Wednesday versus the Orioles and finds himself back in the minors a day later. He'll be replaced by a fresh bullpen arm in Darren McCaughan.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Joins big-league bullpen

The Guardians recalled Curry from Triple-A Columbus on Monday. Curry will provide Cleveland's bullpen with some length. The right-hander holds a 5.68 ERA and 8:3 K:BB over 12.2 frames covering three starts for the Guardians this season.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Sent to Triple-A

The Guardians optioned Curry to Triple-A Columbus on Tuesday, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Curry was shelled for six earned runs in 3.1 innings during his last outing Monday, and the return of Eli Morgan (shoulder) from the injured list will leave the former as the odd man out of Cleveland's pitching staff. The 25-year-old Curry owns a 5.68 ERA through three starts in the majors and has performed even worse in Triple-A (8.79 ERA), though he still could return to Cleveland this year if a spot opens up in the big-league rotation.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Drawing another start

Curry is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Rockies at Coors Field. With Carlos Carrasco (neck) recently joining the likes of Gavin Williams (elbow) and Shane Bieber (elbow) on the injured list, Curry will end up getting at least one more turn through the rotation. After being called up from Triple-A Columbus last Tuesday, Curry started later that day against the Mets and gave up two runs on seven hits and zero walks over 4.1 innings in a no-decision. He'll tentatively line up for two starts this week, with his second turn expected to come next Sunday versus the Nationals.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Allows zero runs in season debut

Curry allowed two hits and one walk over five scoreless innings but did not factor into the decision during Monday's 6-0 win over the Red Sox. He struck out three. Curry was sharp during his first appearance of the season, matching Boston starter Kutter Crawford by piling up zeroes on the board, but the run support didn't come in time to allow him to walk away with the victory. Curry was activated prior to Monday's start after beginning the season dealing with a viral illness and is expected to take on a long-relief role moving forward. However, if he can string together more effective performances like his effort on Monday, Curry could see an opportunity in Cleveland's rotation.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: In line to start Monday

The Guardians will activate Curry (illness) from the 15-day injured list to start Monday's game against the Red Sox, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. Cleveland will be welcoming two new additions to its rotation this week, as Ben Lively (illness) is in line to return from the IL to start Wednesday's game in Boston. The Guardians are expected to have room for only one of the two pitchers in the rotation after the four-game series with the Red Sox, however, as a doubleheader with the Yankees on Saturday created a temporary need for a sixth starter. Curry, who stretched out to 4.1 innings in his latest rehab start with Triple-A Columbus this past Wednesday, would likely serve in a long-relief role if he's moved to the bullpen following Monday's start.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Completes second rehab start

Curry (illness) struck out one and allowed one earned run on five hits and three walks over 4.1 innings in his second rehab start with Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday. Curry threw 59 pitches during the outing and looks poised to return from the 15-day injured list during the Guardians' upcoming series in Boston that begins Monday. Though Curry looked poised to begin the season in the Cleveland bullpen before falling victim to a viral illness, he could get a chance to slot in the rotation if he returns from the IL during the upcoming week. A doubleheader Saturday with the Yankees creates a temporary need for a sixth starter, and Curry could be called upon to fill the void either Tuesday or Wednesday in Boston.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Goes on IL with illness

The Guardians placed Curry on the 15-day injured list Thursday with a viral illness. Curry and Ben Lively are opening the season on the shelf due to a respiratory virus that made its way around the Cleveland clubhouse during spring training, according to MLB.com. Curry will be eligible for activation April 9 and could serve as a multi-inning option out of the bullpen once he's healthy.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Mixed results in spring

Curry has allowed four runs on eight hits while striking out four and walking none over eight innings across three Cactus League appearances. Curry has started two of his three outings. The 25-year-old appears set for a swingman role in 2024, though a lot could hinge on the status of Gavin Williams (elbow) and his availability to begin the campaign. Curry started nine of his 41 appearances last season and stayed in the majors for the whole season since the Guardians' rotation was plagued by injuries. He was solid with a 4.07 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 67:30 K:BB over 95 innings. Curry won't be much of a fantasy option out of the bullpen given his low strikeout numbers, but there's no clear path to the rotation for now.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Takes extra-inning loss

Curry (3-4) allowed an unearned run and walked two batters over one-third of an inning, taking the extra-inning loss versus the Giants on Wednesday. Curry's two walks loaded the bases, and LaMonte Wade's sacrifice fly was enough for the Giants to walk it off in the 10th inning. This was Curry's second consecutive relief appearance. The right-hander has pitched to a 4.10 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 61:26 K:BB through 85.2 innings over 36 appearances (nine starts) this season. There's currently no room for him in Cleveland's rotation, and with Shane Bieber (elbow) still a possibility to return before the end of the year, Curry will likely remain in the bullpen.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Heads back to bullpen

Curry made a relief appearance in Saturday's 6-2 loss to the Angels, giving up two earned runs on three hits and one walk over one inning while failing to strike out a batter. Curry had started in nine of his previous 11 appearances, but it looks like he'll shift back into a bullpen role moving forward after Cleveland recently bolstered its rotation with the waiver-wire pickup of Lucas Giolito, who drew the start Saturday. The Guardians are expected to get Triston McKenzie (elbow) and Shane Bieber (elbow) back from the 60-day injured list later this month, so Curry may not have a path back to the rotation even if Cleveland loses another starting pitcher to an injury at some point in September.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Fans six in no-decision

Curry allowed two runs (one earned) on six hits and a walk over 5.1 innings in Sunday's loss to the Rays. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision. Aside from Rene Pinto's two-run homer in the third inning, Curry turned in a sharp performance. It was a nice rebound for Curry after he was tagged with six runs in just two innings during his last start. He owns a 3.95 ERA this season but has registered a 4.85 ERA over 52 innings since his last win June 9. Curry's next start is currently lined up to be on the road against the Angels.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Coughs up six runs

Curry (3-3) allowed six runs on six hits and a walk over two innings Monday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Twins. Curry gave up all six runs during a brutal second inning highlighted by Royce Lewis' grand slam. Over his last four appearances, Curry has been tagged with 15 runs in 15 innings, driving his season ERA to 4.10 through 79 frames. He's lost three consecutive decisions and hasn't earned a win since June 9. Curry is currently projected to face the Rays at home this weekend.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Struggles in Tampa Bay

Curry was charged with five runs on six hits and two walks over five-plus innings Friday, taking a no-decision in a 9-8 loss to the Rays. He struck out one. Curry retired the side in order each of the first two innings but then labored in the third as the Rays sent eight men to the plate and scored three runs. He bounced back with a scoreless fourth and fifth, but a double ahead of an Isaac Paredes two-run homer in the sixth ended his night. In addition to just one strikeout, Curry managed only two whiffs among 70 pitches. He could get another start as the Guardians continue to patch together their rotation around numerous injuries, but fantasy managers can probably do better.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Pitches well in no-decision

Curry didn't factor into the decision in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the White Sox after allowing two runs on four hits over five innings. He struck out four. Curry turned in an efficient effort, worked through five innings on just 65 pitches (45 strikes). He allowed a pair of runs in the opening inning before dealing four scoreless frames and exiting with a 3-2 lead before the White Sox rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth. A reliever for most of the season, Curry has now made four starts and appears likely to stick in the rotation while Cal Quantrill (shoulder), Triston McKenzie (elbow) and Shane Bieber (elbow) are all sidelined for the foreseeable future. Overall, Curry is 3-1 with an impressive 2.95 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 45:17 K:BB across 64 innings this season. His next start is expected to come in a tough road matchup with the Rays next weekend.

  • Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Staying in rotation

Curry will start Sunday's game against the White Sox and remain in the Guardians' rotation going forward, Mandy Bell of MLB.com reports. He will start getting stretched out to remain in the rotation indefinitely, but Curry may not be ready Sunday to go deep enough to qualify for the win. He has not logged more than three innings in any of his last 10 appearances and has a 2.86 ERA, 1.09 WHIP and 17 strikeouts in 22 innings over that stretch.
