• Guardians' Xzavion Curry: Demoted to Triple-A

  The Guardians optioned Curry to Triple-A Columbus on Wednesday, Joe Noga of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports. Despite tossing five innings of two-hit, shutout ball in his return from the 15-day injured list in Monday's 6-0 win over the Red Sox, Curry will end up moving back to Triple-A just two days later. With injuries having already tested the Guardians' rotation depth early on this season, Curry could end up staying on a regular starting schedule in Columbus. Curry doesn't look like he'll be the top choice to take Gavin Williams' (elbow) spot in the rotation, however, as Ben Lively (illness) will come off the 15-day IL to start Wednesday and could continue to make regular starts until Williams is ready to make his season debut.

Curry was sharp during his first appearance of the season, matching Boston starter Kutter Crawford by piling up zeroes on the board, but the run support didn't come in time to allow him to walk away with the victory. Curry was activated prior to Monday's start after beginning the season dealing with a viral illness and is expected to take on a long-relief role moving forward. However, if he can string together more effective performances like his effort on Monday, Curry could see an opportunity in Cleveland's rotation.

Cleveland will be welcoming two new additions to its rotation this week, as Ben Lively (illness) is in line to return from the IL to start Wednesday's game in Boston. The Guardians are expected to have room for only one of the two pitchers in the rotation after the four-game series with the Red Sox, however, as a doubleheader with the Yankees on Saturday created a temporary need for a sixth starter. Curry, who stretched out to 4.1 innings in his latest rehab start with Triple-A Columbus this past Wednesday, would likely serve in a long-relief role if he's moved to the bullpen following Monday's start.

Curry threw 59 pitches during the outing and looks poised to return from the 15-day injured list during the Guardians' upcoming series in Boston that begins Monday. Though Curry looked poised to begin the season in the Cleveland bullpen before falling victim to a viral illness, he could get a chance to slot in the rotation if he returns from the IL during the upcoming week. A doubleheader Saturday with the Yankees creates a temporary need for a sixth starter, and Curry could be called upon to fill the void either Tuesday or Wednesday in Boston.

The 25-year-old appears set for a swingman role in 2024, though a lot could hinge on the status of Gavin Williams (elbow) and his availability to begin the campaign. Curry started nine of his 41 appearances last season and stayed in the majors for the whole season since the Guardians' rotation was plagued by injuries. He was solid with a 4.07 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 67:30 K:BB over 95 innings. Curry won't be much of a fantasy option out of the bullpen given his low strikeout numbers, but there's no clear path to the rotation for now.

  Curry (3-4) allowed an unearned run and walked two batters over one-third of an inning, taking the extra-inning loss versus the Giants on Wednesday. Curry's two walks loaded the bases, and LaMonte Wade's sacrifice fly was enough for the Giants to walk it off in the 10th inning. This was Curry's second consecutive relief appearance. The right-hander has pitched to a 4.10 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 61:26 K:BB through 85.2 innings over 36 appearances (nine starts) this season. There's currently no room for him in Cleveland's rotation, and with Shane Bieber (elbow) still a possibility to return before the end of the year, Curry will likely remain in the bullpen.

Curry had started in nine of his previous 11 appearances, but it looks like he'll shift back into a bullpen role moving forward after Cleveland recently bolstered its rotation with the waiver-wire pickup of Lucas Giolito, who drew the start Saturday. The Guardians are expected to get Triston McKenzie (elbow) and Shane Bieber (elbow) back from the 60-day injured list later this month, so Curry may not have a path back to the rotation even if Cleveland loses another starting pitcher to an injury at some point in September.

He owns a 3.95 ERA this season but has registered a 4.85 ERA over 52 innings since his last win June 9. Curry's next start is currently lined up to be on the road against the Angels.

Curry gave up all six runs during a brutal second inning highlighted by Royce Lewis' grand slam. He's lost three consecutive decisions and hasn't earned a win since June 9. Curry is currently projected to face the Rays at home this weekend.

  Curry was charged with five runs on six hits and two walks over five-plus innings Friday, taking a no-decision in a 9-8 loss to the Rays. He struck out one. Curry retired the side in order each of the first two innings but then labored in the third as the Rays sent eight men to the plate and scored three runs. He bounced back with a scoreless fourth and fifth, but a double ahead of an Isaac Paredes two-run homer in the sixth ended his night. In addition to just one strikeout, Curry managed only two whiffs among 70 pitches. He could get another start as the Guardians continue to patch together their rotation around numerous injuries, but fantasy managers can probably do better.

  Curry didn't factor into the decision in Sunday's 5-3 loss to the White Sox after allowing two runs on four hits over five innings. He struck out four. Curry turned in an efficient effort, worked through five innings on just 65 pitches (45 strikes). He allowed a pair of runs in the opening inning before dealing four scoreless frames and exiting with a 3-2 lead before the White Sox rallied for three runs in the top of the ninth. A reliever for most of the season, Curry has now made four starts and appears likely to stick in the rotation while Cal Quantrill (shoulder), Triston McKenzie (elbow) and Shane Bieber (elbow) are all sidelined for the foreseeable future. Overall, Curry is 3-1 with an impressive 2.95 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 45:17 K:BB across 64 innings this season. His next start is expected to come in a tough road matchup with the Rays next weekend.

Curry should be able to push into the 50-pitch and 4-to-5-inning range Sunday, and if he fares well again, the Guardians could opt to keep him in the rotation on a more permanent basis. If Curry struggles, however, the Guardians could reinstate Peyton Battenfield (shoulder) from the 60-day injured list the next time a fifth starter is required.

Curry has earned all three of his wins this season over his last four appearances despite allowing three runs (two earned) over seven innings in that span. He's at a 2.51 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 21:7 K:BB over 32.1 innings overall as a long-relief option.

Instead, Peyton Battenfield will get the first crack at replacing Civale in Wednesday's series finale versus the Yankees, while Curry and/or Triple-A Columbus starter Konnor Pilkington are likely next in line to join the rotation if Battenfield falters or if another Cleveland starter should join Civale on the IL.

Zach Plesac was chased from the game after giving up six runs in one-plus innings. Curry stepped in for a long-relief assignment and limited the damage to a two-run home run by Ramon Laureano in the fifth inning. This was Curry's first appearance of the season, and while he's currently occupying a relief role, it's good to see him staying stretched out in case he's needed to step into the rotation. He threw 35 of 55 pitches for strikes and dialed up five swinging strikes. Barring injuries to any of the Guardians' starters, Curry's best chance of getting into the rotation could be if Hunter Gaddis continues to struggle.
