Some saw Ha-seong Kim having a good year for a loaded San Diego lineup but we are not aware of anyone who projected him to be the third-best fantasy batter on the team over the course of the full season. Kim set a professional career-best with his 38 steals and also surfaced the power and run-scoring abilities the marketplace hoped for from him in 2022. He has increased his ability to accept walks in each of his three seasons with San Diego and his batting average has improved in kind. His batting average has room for improvement, and it must come from him improving his outputs against righties as he has been a below-average producer against righties (95 wRC+ last season) while excelling against southpaws (148 wRC+ last season.) The triple position eligibility is going to further push up his draft day price for fantasy managers whereas he was one of the more incredible fantasy bargains this time last year.

Kim (back) is starting at shortstop and batting fifth in Friday's Cactus League game against the Giants. • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Out until Friday with back spasms

Kim will be held out of action until Friday after experiencing back spasms during drills Tuesday, Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Acee says Kim was virtually pain-free by Tuesday evening, but he's being held out Wednesday as a precaution and the Padres are off Thursday. Xander Bogaerts slid over to his old position at shortstop to cover for Kim on Wednesday. Kim has had a nice start to Cactus League play, going 6-for-15 with a home run and two stolen bases.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Shifting to shortstop full-time

Padres manager Mike Shildt said Friday that Kim will be the team's starting shortstop this season, Dennis Lin of The Athletic reports. Xander Bogaerts will shift to second base to form the Padres' new double-play combo. Bogaerts has never played second base before and his defensive metrics at shortstop recently have been solid. However, Kim is undoubtedly the superior defender at short and the Padres don't seem to have any concern about Bogaerts' ability to adapt to the keystone.

  • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Goes 4-for-5 with two thefts

Kim went 4-for-5 with a double, one run scored and two steals in Saturday's win over the White Sox. Kim snapped an 0-for-17 skid in a big way Saturday, collecting three singles and a double while stealing third base twice. The 27-year-old breakout player has slowed down at the plate in September, hitting just .184 with three doubles, zero home runs, seven RBI, eight runs and nine steals across 99 plate appearances. Despite his relatively lethargic finish, the third-year infielder took a huge step forward in the 2023 campaign, posting a .262/.354/.401 season-long slash line and collecting 140 hits, 75 walks, 17 home runs, 84 runs and 38 stolen bases over 151 games (621 plate appearances) -- all career highs.

Kim "is still experiencing some abdominal discomfort," Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports. • Padres' Ha-Seong Kim: Scratched Sunday

Kim was scratched from Sunday's lineup against the Athletics for unspecified reasons. Kim was penciled in to start at second base and bat leadoff Sunday, per usual, but the Padres released an updated lineup that excludes him. Assuming the 27-year-old is dealing with an injury, the team should provide more information in the near future. Matthew Batten will shift to the keystone while Eguy Rosario starts at third base. Jurickson Profar is now batting atop the order.
