Bieber (elbow) will be shut down from throwing until the middle of next week before being re-evaluated after being scratched from his rehab start Friday, Zack Meisel of The Athletic reports.

  • Guardians' Shane Bieber: Scratched from rehab start

Bieber (elbow) was scratched from Friday's scheduled rehab start for Double-A Akron due to soreness, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

Bieber experienced soreness after throwing a bullpen session with the RubberDucks on Tuesday. A consultation with Dr. Keith Meister, the physician who performed his Tommy John surgery last year, led to the recommendation that the right-hander pause his rehab for one week. "Obviously a little bit of the setback with shutting him down for a week, but it seems to be all normal -- normal rehab from Tommy John," Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said. "These things happen. So we'll reassess where we are in a week."

Bieber made the first of what's expected to be several rehab starts while he works his way back from April 2024 Tommy John surgery. The right-hander will be evaluated following Saturday's outing and could move up to a higher-level minor league affiliate. Bieber will likely need close to the full 30-day rehab window to get ramped up and isn't expected to be ready to make his 2025 debut for the Guardians until late June or early July.

  • Guardians' Shane Bieber: Throws live BP session

Bieber (elbow) threw a live batting practice session Friday, MLB.com reports.

Bieber came out of the session without issue, but manager Stephen Vogt said the right-hander still "has a ways to go" before getting into game action. • Guardians' Shane Bieber: Live BP session Friday

Bieber (elbow) will throw a live batting practice session at the Guardians' training complex in Arizona on Friday, MLB.com reports.

Bieber was recently transferred to the 60-day injured list, which is not a concern. It allows for more flexibility with the 40-man roster, and the right-hander is still on schedule for a mid-summer return.

  • Guardians' Shane Bieber: Shifts to 60-day IL

The Guardians transferred Bieber (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports.

The right-hander continues to rehab from Tommy John surgery and isn't expected to be fully ramped up until the middle of summer, so the IL move won't affect his return timeline. Bieber is expected to begin pitching in simulated games at the Guardians' spring training complex at some point in May, after which a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment is likely to follow.

  • Guardians' Shane Bieber: Close to pitching in sim games

Bieber (elbow) is expected to begin pitching in simulated games at the Guardians' spring training complex in Arizona at some point in May, SI.com reports.

Though the Guardians haven't officially confirmed as much, Bieber appears to have reached the point in his rehab that he's facing hitters, after he had been limited to throwing bullpen sessions by the end of spring training. The right-hander is working his way back from April 12, 2024 Tommy John surgery and will require an extensive ramp-up period once he's deemed ready for game action in the minors. If he avoids any setbacks, Bieber could be ready to make his 2025 debut for the Guardians around midseason.

  • Guardians' Shane Bieber: Moved to IL

The Guardians placed Bieber (elbow) on the 15-day injured list Thursday.
