  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Won't be on Opening Day roster

The Mets informed Nido on Saturday that he won't be included on the team's Opening Day roster, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Nido struggled in his limited time in the majors last season, posting a .125 batting average across 61 plate appearances. He was moved off the 40-man roster last June and was attending big-league camp as a non-roster invitee, so it's not too surprising that the Mets elected to keep Omar Narvaez as their No. 2 catcher ahead of Nido.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Outrighted to Triple-A

Nido was outrighted Friday to Triple-A Syracuse, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Nido appears willing to accept the outright assignment if he is not traded. The 29-year-old catcher passed through waivers unclaimed after being designated for assignment by the Mets this past Monday. He's a career .213/.249/.308 hitter in 805 plate appearances at the MLB level.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Pushed off 40-man roster

The Mets designated Nido for assignment Monday. The transaction frees up a spot on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster for fellow catcher Omar Narvaez (calf), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list prior to Tuesday's series opener in Atlanta. According to Mike Puma of the New York Post, the Mets are expected to find a taker for Nido via trade, but if a deal can't be finalized within the next few days, the veteran backstop will be exposed to waivers. The 29-year-old was hitting just .125 over 61 plate appearances on the season but was valued by the Mets for his defensive acumen.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: DFA expected

Nido is expected to be designated for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man and 26-man rosters for Omar Narvaez (calf), Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports. The Mets will go with Francisco Alvarez and Narvaez as their catching combination as Nido gets squeezed out of a job. Nido is regarded as a terrific defender, but that part of his game has taken a step back this season and he's been worse than ever as a hitter with a lowly .278 OPS. Mike Puma of the New York Post hears that the Mets are expected to trade Nido.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Activated from injured list

Nido (eye) was activated from the 10-day injured list Thursday. Having solved his vision issues via punctal plugs and medicated eye drops, Nido is back on the Mets' active roster ahead of Thursday night's series finale at Wrigley Field. Gary Sanchez has been designated for assignment in a corresponding roster move, which pits Nido as the backup to hot-hitting catcher Francisco Alvarez.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Cleared for rehab assignment

Nido (eye) was cleared to begin a rehab assignment Friday with Single-A St. Lucie. Nido was placed on the injured list May 10 due to lingering issues with dryness in both of his eyes, but that has been solved via punctal plugs and medicated eye drops. It's unclear how he'll eventually fit back into the mix at catcher with the Mets, who promoted Gary Sanchez on Friday to back up Francisco Alvarez.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Gets plugs for dry eyes

Nido recently had punctal plugs inserted into each of his eyes to help with his vision issues, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The plugs open his tear ducts and keep his eyes more naturally lubricated. Nido has also been prescribed medicated eye drops to aid in solving the dry eye syndrome that sent him to the injured list last week. He could be ready to return to the Mets relatively soon, though they might want to run with Francisco Alvarez and Michael Perez as their catching tandem for a while longer. Omar Narvaez (calf) will eventually be back in the mix too.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Headed to IL with vision issue

Nido is expected to be placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a vision issue, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Officially, Nido is dealing with "dry eye syndrome" and is expected to be OK in 3-to-4 days, per Tim Healey of Newsday. Michael Perez will replace him on the roster. Francisco Alvarez will be the Mets' primary catcher.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: On bench in second straight

Nido is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Nationals. Even though the Mets were off Monday, Nido will take a seat for the second straight game, as rookie Francisco Alvarez draws another turn behind the dish. Since Alvarez was called up from Triple-A Syracuse on April 7, Nido has taken on the bulk of the starts by virtue of his defensive acumen, but the veteran's anemic .281 OPS on the season could make it difficult for him to justify hanging on to the No. 1 role. Alvarez (.148/.148/.259 slash line in 27 plate appearances) hasn't stood out at the plate since being called up, either, but he'll be rewarded with another start after slugging a home run in Sunday's 5-4 loss to the Giants.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Sitting against Giants

Nido is not in the starting lineup for Friday's game against the Giants, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Nido will get the night off after going 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts against the Giants on Thursday to drop his average to .105. Francisco Alvarez is hitting eighth and handling backstop duties against Anthony DeSclafani.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Gets rest Wednesday

Nido is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. Nido will duck out of the starting nine after he was behind the plate both Monday and Tuesday. Rookie Francisco Alvarez will catch for starting pitcher Max Scherzer in the series finale in Los Angeles.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: On bench Sunday

Nido is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Athletics, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. It's the second straight day on the bench for Nido after he started the previous two contests. Francisco Alvarez is starting behind the plate and catching ninth Sunday, and it appears the pair will split playing time relatively evenly with Omar Narvaez (calf) on the injured list.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Playing ahead of Alvarez

Nido will start at catcher and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Padres. Though the Mets called up top prospect Francisco Alvarez from Triple-A Syracuse over the weekend, Nido still looks poised to serve as the team's top option at catcher while Omar Narvaez (calf) is on the shelf. While he brings far less offensive upside to the table than Alvarez, Nido's pitch-framing and game-calling skills are valued by the organization. Nido will be making his third start in four contests Monday.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Starting at catcher

Nido is starting at catcher and batting ninth for the Mets in Friday's game versus the Marlins. The Mets are going with Nido over youngster Francisco Alvarez in their home opener. Nido's strong defense will ensure he still gets plenty of playing time even with the talented Alvarez on the roster.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Clubs third spring homer

Nido went 1-for-2 with a solo home run in Wednesday's Grapefruit League game against the Cardinals. Getting the start behind the plate and hitting sixth, Nido took Drew VerHagen deep in the fifth inning. It's the backstop's third homer this spring, and he's gone 10-for-26 (.385) in Grapefruit League action while adding a couple doubles as well. The 28-year-old will split time behind the plate with Omar Narvaez this season, likely filling the short side of a platoon, but Nido's career .220/.257/.323 slash line in 744 plate appearances doesn't suggest an offensive breakout is imminent.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Agrees to two-year extension

Nido agreed to a two-year, $3.7 million contract extension with the Mets on Wednesday, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. The contract covers Nido's remaining arbitration years and pays him $1.6 million in 2023 and $2.1 million in 2024. The 28-year-old is expected to serve as a backup backstop again after registering a .239/.276/.324 slash line over 313 plate appearances for the Mets in 2022.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Crushes solo homer

Nido went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's loss against Atlanta. Nido's eighth-inning shot was too little and too late, as the Mets were behind by four and it would turn out to be the final run of the game as Atlanta took the win. It was Nido's third homer of the season, all of which have come this month. The catcher has been heating up in September, slashing .333/.340/.608 and raising his season batting average from .224 to .243 over that span.

  • Mets' Tomas Nido: Poaching work from McCann

Nido will start at catcher and bat ninth in Monday's game against the Brewers. The hot-hitting Nido seems to have temporarily settled in ahead of James McCann on the depth chart at catcher. He'll stick in the lineup for the third time in four games after going 11-for-22 with five extra-base hits (two home runs, three doubles) and a walk over his last six starts.

Nido went 2-for-3 with a solo home run in Wednesday's 6-3 loss against the Cubs. Nido homered off lefty starter Drew Smyly for the Mets' first hit of the game with one out in the third inning. The catcher has recorded an extra-base hit in four straight games and a home run in two straight. In addition, the 28-year-old has tallied six RBI over 21 at-bats in his last seven contests.
