Tigers' Jermaine Palacios: Moves to minors camp
The Tigers reassigned Palacios to minor-league camp Monday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports.
The slick-fielding Palacios reached the majors with the Twins in his age-25 season in 2022, but after slashing just .143/.184/.229 in 77 plate appearances, Minnesota wasn't compelled to keep him on the 40-man roster heading into the upcoming season. Detroit put in a waiver claim on Palacios in October before designating him for assignment a month later and then outrighting him to Triple-A Toledo. Palacios still received the opportunity to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster in big-league camp, but after falling short in his bid for a utility role, he'll presumably stick around in the organization as infield depth at Toledo.

Tigers' Jermaine Palacios: Sticks with Detroit
Palacios re-signed with the Tigers on a minor-league contract Nov. 14, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports.
Palacios spent the 2022 campaign in the Twins organization, hitting .143/.184/.229 over 77 plate appearances in the majors and slashing .283/.341/.462 in 428 plate appearances at the Triple-A level. The Tigers scooped him up off waivers in October, only to outright him to Triple-A Toledo a month later. Palacios then elected free agency, but he quickly agreed to a new deal to stick around in the Detroit organization. The 26-year-old boasts a solid glove in the middle infield, but he's unlikely to hit well enough to emerge as anything more than a bench player in the big leagues.

Palacios was claimed off waivers by the Tigers on Tuesday, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports.
Palacios was placed on waivers by the Twins as part of a cleanup of their 40-man roster, and he is now tentatively slated to begin the 2023 campaign in Detroit. Palacios put up just a .413 OPS over 77 major-league plate appearances in 2022, but he fared a lot better in Triple-A with an .803 OPS. The Tigers designated Drew Hutchison for assignment in a corresponding move.

Twins' Jermaine Palacios: Homers again to close season
Palacios went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Wednesday's victory over the White Sox.
After smacking his first career home run Tuesday, Palacios went yard again Wednesday with a two-run shot in the first inning. While his season-long MLB line is not pretty, the two home runs improved his slugging percentage from .127 to .229. Additionally, he posted in .803 OPS over 102 games in Triple-A this season, so it's possible a longer sample would have seen his numbers approach league average.

Twins' Jermaine Palacios: Clubs first homer
Palacios went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the White Sox.
Palacios has seen his playing time remain inconsistent since he was called up Sept. 3. He had a three-hit effort Sept. 30 versus the Tigers, and those were his only hits across 39 at-bats before his ninth-inning solo shot Tuesday. The infielder didn't do much in the majors this season, logging a .136/.181/.182 slash line with a homer, four RBI and seven runs scored through 73 plate appearances.

After getting called up from Triple-A St. Paul earlier Tuesday, Palacios went 0-for-3 with a walk and a run scored in the Twins' 8-2 win in his MLB debut in Game 1. With a .701 OPS and six stolen bases over 163 plate appearances at St. Paul, the 25-year-old didn't display an especially eye-popping fantasy profile, but he could end up settling in as the Twins' everyday shortstop while both Carlos Correa (COVID-19) and Royce Lewis (knee) are on the injured list. Jorge Polanco has some experience at shortstop, but since he's recently been dealing with a right ankle injury that might limit his range in the field, the Twins may be inclined to keep him at the keystone and instead give Palacios a fair shake at shortstop.

The Twins selected Palacios' contract from Triple-A St. Paul ahead of Tuesday's doubleheader with the Tigers. He'll start at shortstop and bat ninth in Game 1 of the twin bill.
Though Minnesota will immediately plug Palacios into the lineup as a replacement for Carlos Correa -- who landed on the COVID-19-related injured list after testing positive for the virus -- it's uncertain if the 25-year-old will get a look in an everyday role while Correa is sidelined. Palacios brings good speed at the position after he went 6-for-8 in stolen-base attempts at Triple-A this season, but he was still a below-average hitter for the level (.701 OPS, 92 wRC+). If the Twins elect not to lean on Palacios as a lineup regular, the team could go with a committee of Palacios, Jorge Polanco and Nick Gordon to fill in at shortstop while Correa and Royce Lewis (knee) are on the shelf.

Palacios showed an intriguing combination of power and speed last year, boasting an impressive slash line of .320/.362/.544 at Low-A Cedar Rapids. He struggled a bit at High-A with a .662 OPS after a promotion, but he was just 20 years old. He may have an easier path to the majors with Tampa Bay since Minnesota had started to accumulate prospect depth at the middle infield spots.

Palacios, 21, is hitting .304/.327/.416 with two home runs, 18 RBI and eight steals in 39 games since being promoted to High-A Fort Myers.
The 145-pound Palacios has shown an intriguing combination of power and speed, boasting an impressive slash line of .320/.362/.544 at Low-A Cedar Rapids before being promoted. Palacios also had 11 home runs and nine steals in 62 games prior to the promotion. Palacios is a bit of a free swinger, though it hasn't hurt his average thus far during the 2017 campaign. He could be a player to watch in the Minnesota system.
