Manaea has allowed six earned runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out 10 over eight innings through three Cactus League starts. It's encouraging to see Manaea missing bats frequently, but what contact has been made against him has often landed for a hit. The 31-year-old southpaw is coming off his worst season in the majors, in which he posted a 4.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP over 158 innings for the Padres. The Giants have a solid track record of getting the most out of their pitchers, but it'll be on Manaea to pitch well enough to retain his spot in what's shaping up to be a crowded competition for a place in the rotation.... Giants' Sean Manaea: Signs with Giants
Manaea signed a two-year, $25 million contract with the Giants on Monday, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Manaea will remain in the NL West after spending the 2022 campaign with the Padres, going 8-9 while posting a 4.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP with 156 strikeouts over 158 innings in 30 appearances, including 28 starts. The 30-year-old will provide the Giants with another left-handed option in their starting rotation behind ace Logan Webb. In 2023, Manaea will look to bring his pitching numbers back down closer to his career 3.86 ERA and 1.20 WHIP that he had produced over his first five seasons in the MLB prior to 2022.... Padres' Sean Manaea: Submits gem to end losing streak
Manaea (8-9) earned the win during Tuesday's 6-2 victory over San Francisco, allowing one hit and one walk with six strikeouts across six scoreless innings. Manaea put the first two Giants he faced on base before retiring the next 18 batters in order to finish with a 75 game score, his best mark since hist first start of the season April 8. The 29-year-old pounded the zone with 50 of an efficient 66 pitches going for strikes, and he undoubtedly would've worked deeper if a playoff appearance for the team wasn't looming. Prior to Tuesday's victory, Manaea had gone 0-3 with an 8.18 ERA in 22 innings across his last six starts, with San Diego falling in each contest. He concludes 2022 with a 4.96 ERA and 1.30 WHIP -- the worst and second-worst marks of his career, respectively -- with 156 strikeouts in 158 innings across 28 starts and 30 appearances.... Padres' Sean Manaea: Allows one run Thursday
Manaea did not factor into the decision Thursday versus the Dodgers, allowing one run on two hits while striking out three and walking none in four innings. Manaea worked behind an opener Thursday, and the role appeared to suit him well. He'd given up five runs across his previous 8.2 innings entering the contest, but he had better results this time despite throwing only 38 of 62 pitches for strikes. The southpaw has a 5.15 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 150:49 K:BB across 152 innings through 29 outings this year, though his second-half struggles likely mean he'll operate out of the bullpen during the Padres' playoff run. He's tentatively set for one more regular-season outing next week versus the Giants.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Sean Manaea: Likely to work behind opener
Manaea is expected to work in bulk relief behind Steven Wilson, who is scheduled to serve as the Padres' opening pitcher in Thursday's game against the Dodgers, Kevin Acee of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. The Padres gave Manaea just under a two-week break from the rotation earlier this month, but the lefty didn't show major improvement in his subsequent two starts. While pitching on the road in Arizona and Colorado his last two times out, Manaea struck out five over 8.2 innings while allowing five earned runs on nine hits and three walks. Manager Bob Melvin will experiment with Manaea behind an opener Thursday as the southpaw gets some early exposure to the bullpen role he would likely fill for the Friars during a potential postseason run.... Padres' Sean Manaea: Labors in no-decision
Manaea gave up three earned runs on six hits and three walks over 3.2 innings while striking out two in a 4-3 extra-inning loss to the Rockies on Friday. He did not factor into the decision. Manaea couldn't make it out of the fourth inning, and he was pulled from the game after throwing 69 pitches. The 30-year-old left-hander has struggled immensely this season, and 2022 is shaping up to be his worst full season as a starter. Manaea's season-long ERA of 5.23 is the highest of his seven-year career. He is tentatively expected to make his next start in a tough matchup against the Dodgers.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Sean Manaea: Returns to rotation, takes loss
Manaea (7-9) took the loss against Arizona on Thursday, allowing two runs on three hits and no walks while striking out three batters over five innings. Manaea made his first start in nearly two weeks and pitched relatively well. Two of the hits he gave up were solo homers however, and that was more than enough to send the Padres to a loss on a night when they managed just three hits and zero runs. Manaea at least provided a positive takeaway after giving up 14 runs over 8.1 frames across his previous two starts, and he may be a key factor down the stretch as San Diego seeks to hold onto a wild-card spot.... Padres' Sean Manaea: Re-entering rotation Thursday
Manaea is scheduled to start Thursday's series opener in Arizona, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Manaea was temporarily the odd man out of the rotation after the Padres condensed to four starters due to a pair of recent off days, but he'll be back on the mound while the Friars are in the midst of a stretch of six games in six days. During his brief exile from the rotation, Manaea made a one-inning relief appearance last weekend against the Dodgers, striking out two while allowing no runs on one hit and no walks.... See More ... Padres' Sean Manaea: Won't start this weekend
Manaea will have his turn through the rotation skipped during the Padres' weekend series against the Dodgers, Jeff Sanders of The San Diego Union-Tribune reports. Manaea struggled mightily against the Dodgers on Saturday, allowing eight runs on nine hits and a walk while striking out four in 4.1 innings. Since the Padres have a scheduled day off Thursday, the team will elect to skip his turn through the rotation. It's not yet clear whether the southpaw will be available out of the bullpen this weekend or when he'll ultimately make his next start for San Diego.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Sean Manaea: Rocked in Los Angeles
Manaea (7-8) took the loss against the Dodgers on Saturday, surrendering eight runs on nine hits and one walk while striking out four batters over 4.1 innings. Manaea was in trouble from the get-go, falling behind 2-0 after two batters on a home run by Trea Turner. That was one of three long balls the southpaw gave up in the game, the last of which -- a Justin Turner two-run bomb in the fifth inning -- sent him to the showers. Manaea has been hit hard in each of his past two starts, giving up a combined 14 runs and 19 hits over 8.1 frames. His season ERA is up to 5.27, which is on pace to be the worst of his career.... Padres' Sean Manaea: Lit up for six runs
Manaea (7-7) gave up six earned runs on 10 hits and no walks while striking out four over four innings to take the loss in a 15-7 defeat against the Royals on Sunday. Manaea's struggles in the month of August continued with an abysmal appearance that saw him picked apart by hits and chased after 79 pitches. It was Manaea's worst start since Aug. 8, when he was pounded for eight runs by the Dodgers. He has now given up 21 earned runs over five starts this month and his season-long ERA has crept up to 4.90. The left-hander is tentatively expected to make his next start at the Dodgers.... Padres' Sean Manaea: Efficient in win
Manaea (7-6) earned the win Sunday over the Nationals. He allowed a run on five hits and struck out four without walking a batter through seven innings. Manaea was efficient in this win, throwing 51 of 69 pitches for strikes before the Padres went to the bullpen. Nelson Cruz's fourth-inning solo home run accounted for the lone run on Manaea's line. The 30-year-old southpaw had allowed multiple earned runs in 11 straight starts before Sunday's impressive start. He has a 4.64 ERA, 1.29 WHIP and 132:45 K:BB across 130 innings through 23 starts this year. He's projected for a favorable road start in Kansas City next weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Sean Manaea: Lasts four innings in no-decision
Manaea allowed three runs on four hits and a walk, striking six in four innings in a 4-3 loss Tuesday in Miami. He did not factor into the decision. Nick Fortes tagged Manaea with solo homers in the second and fourth innings. The lefty was removed from the game after four innings, having tossed 64 pitches. It was his fifth straight outing of 83 pitches or fewer. Since the All-Star break, he has an 8.06 ERA, 1.75 WHIP and seven homers allowed in 22.1 innings across five outings.... See More ... Padres' Sean Manaea: Throws five innings in no-decision
Manaea allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits and one walk while striking out four across five innings Wednesday against the Giants. He did not factor into the decision. Manaea was hit hard in the second and third innings, though he managed to tack on two scoreless frames to salvage a decent outing. Manaea entered Wednesday's start having maintained a 6.60 ERA, 1.69 WHIP and a 47:19 K:BB across 45 innings and nine starts since June 14. For the season, Manaea now has a 4.76 ERA in 119 frames on the season.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Sean Manaea: Shelled by Dodgers
Manaea (6-6) took the loss during Friday's 8-1 defeat at the hands of the Dodgers, allowing eight runs on 10 hits and one walk with seven strikeouts in four innings. Manaea faced problem innings in the first and third, allowing four runs in each frame along with 10 of his 12 baserunners. The 30-year-old has hit a bit of a rough patch with a 7.14 ERA across 29 innings in six starts since the end of June, with the one bright side being seven strikeouts and at least 13 swinging strikes in each of his last two turns. Manaea now possesses a 4.74 ERA and 1.32 WHIP with 118 strikeouts in 114 innings across 20 starts. He lines up to take the mound again midweek against the Giants.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Sean Manaea: Strikes out seven in win
Manaea (6-5) earned the win during Sunday's 3-2 victory over Minnesota, allowing two runs on four hits and three walks with seven strikeouts in six innings. Manaea navigated the first four frames unscathed but ran into trouble thereafter, surrendering solo home runs in the fifth and sixth innings while stranding the bases loaded in the fifth. The 30-year-old fired 56 of 83 pitches for strikes with an impressive 13 of the swinging variety while the seven strikeouts match his best total across his last nine turns. Manaea now possesses a 4.25 ERA and 1.27 WHIP with 111 strikeouts in 110 innings across 19 starts. He's currently scheduled to take the mound again next weekend against the Dodgers.... See More ... Padres' Sean Manaea: Takes loss in ugly outing
Manaea (5-5) allowed nine runs (four earned) on eight hits and a walk over 3.1 frames Monday, striking out four and taking a loss against the Tigers. Manaea turned in a pair of scoreless frames before coughing up five runs in the third inning, including a grand slam by Eric Haase. The 30-year-old lefty was tagged with four more runs in the fourth, including a leadoff shot by Jeimer Candelario. It was the fourth time this year that Manaea's given up two homers in a start and the first time since June 14. His ERA is up to 4.33 with a 104:39 through 18 appearances. Manaea is lined up to face the Twins at home this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Sean Manaea: Defeats Arizona
Manaea (5-4) earned the win Saturday versus the Diamondbacks. He allowed three runs on seven hits and two walks with three strikeouts in six innings. Manaea gave up five extra-base hits, including an RBI triple to Buddy Kennedy in the fourth inning and a two-run home run to Carson Kelly in the fifth. Despite the hard contact, Manaea limited the damage well and earned his fourth quality start in his last five outings. He heads into the All-Star break with a win in consecutive starts for the first time this year. The southpaw owns a 4.11 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 100:38 K:BB across 100.2 innings in 17 games.... Padres' Sean Manaea: Bounces back for fourth win
Manaea (4-4) earned the win Monday over the Rockies. He allowed two runs on five hits and a walk while striking out five in 6.1 innings. Manaea gave up a sacrifice fly to C.J. Cron and a solo home run to Randal Grichuk. That was all the damage on Manaea's line, making this an encouraging bounce-back effort after he lasted just 3.1 innings in a loss to the Mariners last Monday. The southpaw has 12 quality starts in 16 outings, and he owns a 4.09 ERA, 1.21 WHIP and 97:36 K:BB across 94.2 innings this season. He's projected for one more start before the All-Star break, which would be a home date against the Diamondbacks this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Padres' Sean Manaea: Can't escape fourth inning
Manaea (3-4) took the loss during Monday's 8-2 defeat at the hands of the Mariners, allowing four runs on eight hits and four walks with three strikeouts in 3.1 innings. Manaea surrendered four baserunners and two runs in the first inning then another five and two in the fourth before being pulled with one out and the bases loaded. Reliever Tayler Scott was able to escape the jam; however, Manaea still tied his season low with a 27 game score. The 30-year-old found the zone with 38 of his 71 pitches and induced just four swinging strikes in tying another season worst with three strikeouts. Manaea carries a 4.18 ERA into his next start, projected to come early next week in Colorado.... See More ... See Less
