  • Angels' Miguel Sano: Starting at DH in opener

Sano will start at designated hitter and bat seventh in Thursday's season opener versus the Orioles.

Not only did Sano make the team after going to camp as a non-roster invitee, but he will be part of the batting order for Opening Day. The Angels could still ultimately rotate through multiple players in the DH spot, but Sano's power gives him some deep-league relevancy should he find regular playing time.

  • Angels' Miguel Sano: Added to 40-man roster

The Angels selected Sano's contract from Triple-A Salt Lake on Wednesday.

Just as manager Ron Washington indicated would be the case Tuesday, Sano was added to the Angels' 40-man and 26-man rosters ahead of Thursday's season opener versus the Orioles. Sano, who has four seasons of 25-plus home runs on his resume, didn't play at all in affiliated ball during the 2023 season but joined the Halos for spring training and popped four long balls over 54 at-bats in Cactus League play. However, Sano also struck out 20 times, and his boom-or-bust tendencies will likely result in him being limited to a bench role unless injuries open up an opportunity for regular playing time.

  • Angels' Miguel Sano: Makes Opening Day roster

Manager Ron Washington confirmed Tuesday that Sano has made the Angels' Opening Day roster, Greg Beacham of The Associated Press reports.

Sano signed a minor-league contract with the Angels in January and was reported to have lost 58 pounds entering spring training. He did not play professional baseball last season but did suit up for Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League before spring training. Sano posted a .778 OPS with 30 home runs across 532 plate appearances in 135 games for the Twins during his last full season in 2021, and he'll break camp with the Angels despite mustering a .200/.298/.400 slash line, albeit with three home runs, this spring. Sano is expected to see most of his playing time at designated hitter as the Angels attempt to address the void created by the departure of Shohei Ohtani.

  • Angels' Miguel Sano: Significantly slimmer this spring

Sano said Sunday that he's lost 58 pounds in an effort to stay healthy, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports.

Sano had some visa issues that delayed his arrival at camp, but he reported Sunday and turned heads with his weight loss. The veteran is trying to get his career back on track after not catching on with any team last season and playing in just 20 big-league games in 2022. The Angels signed Sano to a minor-league deal in January with the hope that he can return to the level of production that led to 30-plus homers in both 2019 and 2021 while he was with the Twins.

  • Angels' Miguel Sano: Receives NRI from Angels

Sano signed a minor-league contract with the Angels on Tuesday that includes an invitation to spring training, Enrique Rojas of ESPN Deportes reports.

Sano never caught on with another team after the Twins declined his option last offseason, but he's been playing with Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League this offseason. The 30-year-old went just 5-for-60 at the plate for Minnesota in 2022 and battled knee issues, but he has a couple 30-homer seasons under his belt, one as recently as 2021. Sano could be an option to fill the massive void created at designated hitter by Shohei Ohtani's departure.

  • Miguel Sano: Playing winter ball

Sano is hitting .182 with two home runs and a .750 OPS in 27 games for Estrellas Orientales in the Dominican Winter League

Sano worked out for MLB teams last winter but didn't find an offer that worked amid concerns about his health in coming back from a 2022 knee injury. It looks like Sano could try to sign with a MLB team this winter, but he'll likely need to prove himself in the minors or another league before receiving another big-league opportunity.

  • Miguel Sano: Plans to play winter ball

Sano (knee) plans to play winter ball in an effort to continue his career, the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. He worked out for several teams this spring but didn't find a contract and returned to the Dominican Republic.

Sano entered free agency in November after the Twins declined his option for the 2023 season. He managed only 71 plate appearances due to a lingering knee issue in 2022, and the knee was likely still a concern in the spring. It sounds like Sano hasn't given up on his major-league career, but he'll likely need to prove himself in the minors or another league before receiving another opportunity.

  • Miguel Sano: Hosting workout

Sano (knee) will host a workout for scouts Feb. 7, Darren Wolfson of Channel 5 Saint Paul reports.

Sano entered free agency in November after the Twins declined his option for the 2023 season. That decision came as little surprise after he managed only 71 plate appearances due to a lingering knee issue in 2022. However, he had posted an OPS of at least .750 in three consecutive prior campaigns, so it's possible he could get a small deal and earn some plate appearances at designated hitter for a club if he proves healthy.

  • Miguel Sano: Enters open market

The Twins declined Sano's 2023 option Monday, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.

Declining the $14 million option was likely a no-brainer for the Twins, as Sano posted a .344 OPS in 71 big-league plate appearances in 2021 before struggling with injuries for the rest of the season. A minor-league or one-year MLB contract seems like the best-case scenario this offseason for Sano, who when healthy could still provide some home run power but nothing more.

  • Twins' Miguel Sano: Transferred to 60-day IL

Sano (knee) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Betsy Helfand of the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports.

It's not exactly clear why Sano was moved to the longer of the two injured lists just a few days after landing on the 10-day IL, but according to the report, "the Twins found something on his MRI." Sano will not be eligible to be activated until Sept. 28, so his season may very well be over.

  • Twins' Miguel Sano: Back on IL

The Twins will place Sano on the 10-day injured list Saturday with left knee inflammation, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports.

He was just activated from the 60-day injured list earlier this week, so Sano obviously aggravated the left knee after putting some weight on it for full games. He went 0-for-6 with four strikeouts and zero walks in three games since getting activated. Alex Kirilloff should get extended playing time. Sano had surgery for a torn left meniscus in May.

  • Twins' Miguel Sano: Activated from IL

Sano (knee) was activated from the 60-day injured list Monday, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports.

Sano needed to be activated Monday to avoid an extension of his rehab assignment, and the team made the move official Monday evening. He was batting .093 with a home run, three RBI and one stolen base through 17 games before undergoing surgery in mid-May to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee. It's unclear as to the type of role Sano will play on the active roster.

  • Twins' Miguel Sano: Looming roster decision

Sano (knee) needs to be activated from the injured list by Monday or have his rehab assignment extended, which would require his permission, the St. Paul Pioneer Press reports. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli declined to indicate what the team plans to do Monday.

Sano is hitting .348 with three home runs in seven games for Triple-A St. Paul during his rehab assignment. After hitting just .093/.231/.148 in 17 games before undergoing surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee in May, it's not clear the Twins have a spot for him on the major league roster. If they don't activate him from the injured list, the Twins could designate him for assignment and hope he goes unclaimed and agrees to remain in the minors. The Twins have a $3 million opt-out in the last year of his contract after the season, so it's possible they could let him go. However, he's shown enough during his rehab assignment to at least be on the bench the rest of the season in the majors.
