Player Outlook
Craig Kimbrel signed a 1-year deal with Philadelphia last off-season and maintained his standing among the active saves leaders by converting a team-leading 23 saves. The veteran closer now has 417 saves for his career - 2nd among active pitchers. Kimbrel had trouble adjusting to the pitch clock - his 13 violations were most by a reliever - but he was outstanding in his age-35 season, pitching 69 innings across 71 games with a 3.26 ERA, 1.04 WHIP and 94:28 K:BB ratio. He was 7th among qualified relievers in strikeouts and 15th with a 23.7% K-BB percentage despite a 10.1% walk rate. When Kimbrel allowed contact, balls were often hit hard. His 46.7% hard-hit rate (4th percentile) was poor and he gave up a career-worst 10 home runs. However, Kimbrel had dominant stretches last year, including a 13-inning scoreless streak before the All-Star break with a 20:1 K:BB. Kimbrel should have no problem finding work in 2024 given his recent success and experience in high-leverage.

  • Orioles' Craig Kimbrel: Ready for spring debut

Kimbrel (quadriceps) expects to make his Grapefruit League debut Thursday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. The veteran closer had to cut a live batting practice session short over the weekend due to quad soreness, but he faced hitters Monday and reported feeling "great" Tuesday morning. With that, he appears to be in the clear for his debut in an Orioles uniform. Kimbrel signed a one-year, $13 million deal in December to replace the injured Felix Bautista (elbow) in the ninth inning.

Kimbrel cut his session of live batting practice short Saturday due to quadriceps soreness, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. • Orioles' Craig Kimbrel: Officially signs with Baltimore

The Orioles signed Kimbrel to a one-year, $13 million contract Wednesday with a $13 million club option for 2025, Joel Sherman of the New York Post reports. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic was first to pass along word that a deal was close, and now it's all official after Kimbrel passed his pre-signing physical. The veteran reliever registered a steady 3.26 ERA with 94 strikeouts across 69 regular-season innings for the Phillies in 2023, also racking up 23 saves. He will now step into the closer role in Baltimore as a replacement for Felix Bautista, who is slated to miss the entire 2024 campaign as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

It's unclear at this point what the details of the contract could look like. Kimbrel would presumably take over as closer for the Orioles with Felix Bautista (elbow) set to miss 2024 while recovering from Tommy John surgery. The 35-year-old Kimbrel posted a 3.26 ERA and 94:28 K:BB over 69 innings for the Phillies in 2023, collecting 23 saves along the way.

Kimbrel blew the save in the 10th inning Wednesday during the Phillies' 9-8 loss to the Marlins, giving up two runs (one earned) on two hits. Both of Kimbrel's blown saves on the season have come since the All-Star break, and over his last 10 innings he has a tepid 8:4 K:BB despite a superficially strong 2.70 ERA and 1.00 WHIP. Gregory Soto got the nod in the ninth inning Wednesday and was also charged with a blown save, and he could keep working his way into the closer mix as long as Kimbrel continues to show signs of fading.

Kimbrel recorded his 15th save of the season in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader sweep of the Padres, walking two and striking out one in a scoreless ninth inning. Kimbrel hasn't been scored upon in 14 straight appearances dating back to June 8, posting a 21:3 K:BB through 14 innings over that stretch and converting all six of his save chances, so Saturday's wobble doesn't seem to be cause for concern.
