The San Diego Padres, under new ownership, will have between $25 and $30 million to spend this winter after the club signed Carlos Quentin and Huston Street to contract extensions, tweeted San Diego sports radio XX1090's Jordan Carruth. The Padres are interested in outfielders, Carruth said.
The Padres, 49-64 and fourth in the NL West, ahead of only the Rockies, were thought to be sellers in the weeks and days leading to the July 31 nonwaiver trade deadline. Instead, they locked up Quentin and Street, and held on to Chase Headley.
The Padres came into this season with a payroll of $55,621,900, according to Baseball Prospectus. Since 2000, the Padres' highest payroll was $73,677,616, in 2008.
Notable outfielders available this winter in free agency are Michael Bourn, Melky Cabrera, Josh Hamilton, Torii Hunter, and B.J. Upton.
