  • Matt Garza has been shut down indefinitely by the Cubs and is expected to be placed on the disabled list to make room for left-handed pitcher Brooks Raley, Carrie Muskat of MLB.com reported. Raley owns a 3.62 ERA with 69 strikeouts against 28 walks in 14 starts covering 82 innings at Triple-A Iowa this season.
  • The Astros placed Jordan Schafer on the disabled list with a shoulder separation and will call up outfielder Brandon Barnes from Triple-A Oklahoma City, Zachary Levine of the Houston Chronicle reported. Schafer played in 96 games, recording just a .606 OPS as the Astros' center fielder. Barnes owns a .323/.383/.477 line for Oklahoma City. Juan Abreu was designated for assignment to make room on the 40-man roster, the club announced via Twitter
  • The Athletics reinstated Cliff Pennington from the disabled list and optioned Pedro Figueroa to Triple-A Sacramento, the club announced via Twitter. Pennington lastp layed July 20 due to left elbow tendinitis. The shortstop is mired in the worst season of his career, with a .541 OPS compounding his injury issues. Figueroa threw 15 innings for the Athletics, recording a 1.20 ERA but walking 11 against eight strikeouts.
