The Mets are considering free-agent reliever Brian Wilson to fill their need at closer, according to CBSSports.com baseball insider Jon Heyman.

Mets general manager Sandy Alderson was on hand Saturday morning for a private workout by Wilson, according to USA Today's Bob Nightengale and confirmed by Heyman.

CBSSports.com senior baseball columnist Scott Miller reports that six to eight teams still are pursuing Wilson, who is deciding whether to close for a non-contender or fill a set-up role for a contender.

Incumbent Mets closer Frank Francisco posted a 5.53 ERA and 1.61 WHIP while picking up 23 saves in 42 1/3 innings last season. If Wilson were signed, he would presumably take over the closer role.

Wilson, who turns 31 in March, missed most of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in April, but he appears on track to be ready by opening day. He recorded 171 career saves as a member of the Giants, with 163 of those saves coming during a four-season stretch from 2008 to 2011.
