  Megill gave up two hits and a walk over four scoreless innings in Tuesday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out five. The 29-year-old right-hander was essentially gifted a rotation spot to begin the season when Sean Manaea (oblique) and Frankie Montas (lat) went down with injuries, but Megill has earned the assignment so far this spring with a 1.35 ERA and 7:2 K:BB over 6.2 innings. He's always had intriguing stuff, highlighted by a 27.0 percent strikeout rate over 78 regular-season innings in the majors last year, but to this point in his career a true breakout has eluded him.

• Mets' Tylor Megill: Will stretch out this spring

  Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said Tuesday that Megill will be stretched out as a starting pitcher this spring, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. The Mets' current plan is to open the season with a six-man rotation, and Megill will be in the mix for one of those last two spots along with David Peterson, Griffin Canning and Paul Blackburn (back). Megill could eventually shift to a relief role, although he does have minor-league options left; therefore, the righty could also open the season in the Triple-A Syracuse rotation.

The New York right-hander posted his second consecutive quality start and third overall with this 94-pitch performance. Megill allowed just one extra-base hit -- a double by Dylan Crews in the second -- working around an unearned run in third en route to his 21st career win. The hard-throwing 29-year-old averaged 96.3 mph on his fastball, up 0.7 mph from his normal, and has now pitched to a 2.76 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 28:9 K:BB across 29.1 innings in the second half. • Mets' Tylor Megill: Next start coming Tuesday

  Megill is expected to make his next start Tuesday against the Nationals at Citi Field, Tim Britton of The Athletic reports. Though Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said that Megill would stick in the rotation after striking out nine over six shutout innings Monday against the Blue Jays, the right-hander will have to wait more than a week to make his next turn. While Megill would be on normal rest for Saturday's game in Philadelphia or five days' rest for Sunday's series finale, the Mets are instead realigning their rotation to have Luis Severino and David Peterson start those respective games. The shuffling will allow the team's top pitcher, Sean Manaea, to start every five days down the stretch, as the Mets push for a wild-card spot. Manaea will take the hill for Monday's series opener versus the Nationals and will be followed by Megill and Jose Quintana, on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively. Manaea and Megill will both be on track for two-start weeks, with the two lining up for starts in next weekend's home series versus the Phillies.

With Kodai Senga (calf) lost for the season and Christian Scott (elbow) lacking a clear return date, Megill will likely get an extended run in the rotation unless the Mets bring in help at the trade deadline. According to Puma, Megill said the injury was caused by the lower arm slot he used on his curveball, but the right-hander reported no issues with throwing his breaking pitches during his four-start minor-league rehab assignment. Megill most recently tossed 5.1 shutout innings and 74 pitches in his final rehab start for Triple-A Syracuse on May 12, so he's not expected to be under any major workload restrictions as he steps back into the big-league rotation.

In what could be the right-hander's final rehab start, Megill built up to 74 pitches (55 strikes) as he dominated Lehigh Valley. Over four rehab appearances, Megill has an eye-popping 23:1 K:BB over 14 innings while allowing just one run. There's no clear vacancy in the big-league rotation at the moment with Christian Scott getting promoted from Triple-A earlier this month, but the Mets could go with a six-man rotation in the short term, as they don't get a day off until May 23. If he stays on turn, Megill would get activated from the 15-day injured list Friday for a road start against the Marlins.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza had indicated previously that Tuesday could represent Megill's final rehab start, and he certainly looks to have passed the test. However, whether he'll go back into the Mets rotation or remain at Syracuse hasn't yet been determined. The Mets could use a six-man rotation for a while, or Megill could replace Jose Butto, who is starting Tuesday for the big club.
