Utah vs. Oregon State score: No. 10 Utes lifeless without QB Cameron Rising in first loss of season

No. 19 Oregon State used a stout defensive effort to pull away from No. 10 Utah 21-7 in a win that keeps the Beavers firmly in the Pac-12 Championship Game hunt. Though the Utes enjoyed a 4-0 start to the season without star quarterback Cameron Rising, middling offensive outputs and mounting injuries created a dangerous conference road trip on a short week.

That turned out to be true against an Oregon State team that won on both sides of the ball. Utah was held to a season-low 198 yards of total offense and allowed three sacks. It was the second consecutive week the Utes have struggled offensively, having previously posted 219 total yards of offense and a single offensive touchdown against UCLA in Week 4.

The Beavers nearly recorded their first shutout in a conference game since 1975, but Utah quarterback Nate Johnson connected with tight end Thomas Yassmin for a 41-yard touchdown with 5:05 remaining. That late score created just enough interest before a turnover on downs with under three minutes remaining allowed the Beavers to run out the clock.

Oregon State quarterback DJ Uiagalelei finished 14 of 25 passing for 204 yards and a touchdown, which came on arguably the most impressive play of the evening: A 45-yard scamper by Silas Bolden on a pitch from DJU on a fourth-and-1 at the start of the fourth quarter. Bolden was the player of the game, finishing with 153 yards of total offense with two touchdowns.

After starting in Rising's absence, Johnson was briefly benched in the second half for veteran backup Bryson Barnes but returned in the fourth quarter after Barnes suffered an injury on a roughing the passer penalty and did not return to the game. Coach Kyle Whittingham said after the game that Barnes was admitted to the hospital with an undisclosed injury.

Oregon State travels to Cal in Week 6, while Utah has a bye week before facing the same Cal team in Salt Lake City, Utah, on Oct. 14.

Utah's defense up to the task

After four weeks of play, Utah is among one of the best defensive units in college football. The Utes rank No. 6 among all teams in scoring defense at 9.5 points per game and tied for No. 9 with UCLA in total yards allowed. Utah has been relying on its defense to win, and so far has been successful doing it. Oregon State's Damien Martinez will be the best running back the Utes have seen so far this season.

Rising out, Johnson in for Utah

Utah will indeed be without Rising for its top-25 matchup with Oregon State on Friday. Rising has been rehabbing the entire offseason since suffering a torn ACL in January's Rose Bowl and has yet to appear in a game this season. Johnson is in line to start for the Utes. Through four games, he's thrown for 398 yards with two touchdowns. Utah's offense revolves around Rising's greatest strength, which is his mobility. Johnson is a great athlete and will certainly help the Utes, but Rising is missed all the same. The Pac-12 schedule doesn't get any easier with matchups against USC and Oregon on the horizon. Utah will be relying on its stout defense, which ranks No. 6 among all FBS teams in scoring defense.

How will DJU respond?

Oregon State is coming off its first loss of the season against Washington State on the road and the schedule doesn't get much easier with a matchup with No. 10 Utah on Friday. Beavers quarterback DJ Uiagalelei will need to find his Week 1 form if Oregon State wants to remain in the thick of the Pac-12 Championship Game hunt. In Oregon State's season opener against San Jose State, Uiagalelei had five total touchdowns with no turnovers, but has regressed ever so slightly. Utah's defense is stacked, this will not be an easy bounce-back effort, but it will be necessary.

Utah vs. Oregon State pick

Rising may truly be a game-time decision this week. If he does play, will the Utes ease him back into the lineup with some designed packages or will he be given the green light to play the full game? Both teams like to run the ball and rely on defense, so the under 44.5 is intriguing. Even though this is a road game for the Utes, they still have the edge because of how good their defense has been through the first month of the season. This will be a close game, and Utah with the points is too good to pass up. Pick: Utah +3

Will Rising play?

Cameron Rising's availability is the biggest question tonight. The Utah quarterback did warm up with a knee brace, but his status is otherwise a mystery 90 minutes before kickoff. Rising has yet to appear in a game this season as he recovers from an ACL tear suffered in January's Rose Bowl. If Rising is a scratch, Nate Johnson will continue to carry the weight of moving the offense. He's been generally effective so far, but he works particularly well within the rushing scheme with Ja'Quinden Jackson and Jaylon Glover. Either way, the two-time reigning Pac-12 champs shouldn't be counted out; they have proven time and time again they can win without Rising.
