Notre Dame vs. Clemson score: Irish defense destroys No. 4 Tigers in signature win for Marcus Freeman

Notre Dame delivered a crushing blow to No. 4 Clemson by upsetting the Tigers 35-14 in a banner victory for first-year coach Marcus Freeman. The Fighting Irish used a suffocating defense and elite special teams to frustrate Clemson, limiting the visitors to just 281 yards of total offense and holding the Tigers without a touchdown until the fourth quarter when the game was essentially out of reach.

The Fighting Irish's offense faced struggles of its own, but Logan Diggs and Audric Estime both surpassed 100 yards on the ground as Notre Dame imposed its will in key situations while averaging 5.6 yards per rush. Initially, however, it was a punt blocked by Jordan Botelho that Prince Kollie returned for a touchdown in the first quarter that gave the home team an early edge.

The defense took over from there as Clemson quarterback DJ Uiagalelei struggled to jumpstart the Tigers offensively. Eventually, he was replaced by five-start true freshman Cade Klubnik late in the third quarter but to no avail. Klubnik's second pass was intercepted, leading to an Estime touchdown that made it 21-0 with 14:37 remaining.

Marcus Freeman's signature victory

After embarrassing home losses to Marshall and Stanford earlier in the season, Freeman needed a signature win. This one certainly qualifies. Clemson has consistently been among the sport's top programs for the past decade, and the Tigers came into the week as one of just six undefeated teams in the sport.

His recruiting work has been stellar; the Fighting Irish currently own the No. 3-ranked class in the 2023 cycle, per 247Sports. But in his first season as a head coach, Freeman needed some on-field accolades to pair with his work on the recruiting trail. He's got them now, and the Fighting Irish may not be done yet. They figure to be heavy favorites the next two weeks against Navy and Boston College before a big season finale at No. 9 USC. Depending on where the Trojans are in the national landscape at that point, Notre Dame could have yet another chance to play the spoiler role on the national stage.

Clemson CFP implications

The loss does not altogether eliminate Clemson from CFP contention, but it does make the Tigers' path to the playoff more challenging. With a win over a well-regarded North Carolina team in the ACC Championship Game, Clemson could still make the CFP field as a one-loss team, according CBS Sports expert Jerry Palm. But they may need to win that game convincingly over the No. 17 Tar Heels, who improved to 8-1 with a 31-28 win over Virginia on Saturday.

Clemson still has three must-win regular season games ahead as well, though the Tigers should be heavy favorites in all three contests. Up first is Louisville next week, followed by Miami and South Carolina to close the season. All three are home games.

Clemson quarterback situation

Clemson's quarterback situation remains unsettled, as evidenced by the fact that coach Dabo Swinney turned to Klubnik for a spark in the second half yet again. But unlike in a 27-21 win over Syracuse two weeks ago, the move backfired. Swinney quickly pulled Klubnik and put Uiagalelei back in the game after Klubnik's first pass was intercepted.

Where Swinney goes from here will be fascinating to see. Though Uiagalelei has obviously improved since last season, the Tigers do not inspire fear in opponents offensively and Klubnik appears to be the program's quarterback of the future. With Clemson's CFP hopes on shaky footing, Swinney's insistence on sticking with Uiagalelei figures to be tested again in the season's remaining weeks.

Running wild

Final: Notre Dame 35, Clemson 14

Notre Dame's defense will get much of the credit for this outcome, and rightfully so. But don't overlook how solid Notre Dame was running the football against one of the nation's better defensive fronts. Audric Estime and Logan Diggs each surpassed 100 yards as the Fighting Irish averaged 5.6 yards per pop on the ground.

Touchdown Notre Dame

Drew Pyne scores on a 5-yard QB keeper with 38 seconds left in the half to cap an 11-play, 78-yard drive. Impressive drive for the Fighting Irish against a stingy Clemson defense. Tigers have three timeouts and enough time to make something happen, but their offense has been ineffective to say the least.

Another punt

Yet another punt as Clemson fails to muster much offense yet again. The Tigers failed to convert on fourth down at the end of their only consequential series so far. It's been all punts otherwise as this Notre Dame defense flexes. It's been all special teams and defense for both sides so far.

Missed field goal

Blake Grupe misses a 42-yarder amid some serious wind in South Bend, and the Tigers dodge a bullet after a promising Clemson drive. Still 7-0 Fighting Irish. Estime and Diggs got Notre Dame rolling there.

Big sack

Howard Cross III sacks DJU for a loss of 8. He's 9 of 11 through the air but for just 41 yards and hasn't been much of a playmaker. It's 7-0 early in the second quarter, and you've gotta wonder how long the leash is for DJ. We've seen Klubnik give this team a spark before, and it's going to be tough sledding against this Notre Dame defense tonight.

Good start for Notre Dame

As expected, it's been a defensive struggle so far. Notre Dame has the ball near midfield to start the second quarter after taking a lead off a blocked punt in the first quarter.

Notre Dame gets it back

Great bounce on the punt Aidan Swanson that travels 67 yards. Brandon Joseph scooped it up and ran it 5 yards, but a field-position changer nonetheless. Special teams playing a big part in this game so far.

Batted down

Clemson brought pressure on third-and-4 and Pyne's pass was batted down by Trenton Simpson at the line of scrimmage. Irish punt and it's a pretty good one downed at the 13. The special teams TD looms particularly large when you realize the Irish have just one first down through two possessions.

Fourth down fail

Clemson opts to go for it on fourth-and-4 from the Notre Dame 38 and failed to convert. DJU misfired on a deep shot too Beaux Collins. Fighting Irish take over leading 7-0. Great start for Notre Dame.

Game-changing play

Prince Kollie scoops up a punt blocked by Jordan Botelho and runs it back 19 yards for a touchdown. Huge play early in the first quarter. Clemson picked up a first down but stalled out from there. Another huge special teams play from the Fighting Irish.

Off and running

Drew Pyne hit Michael Mayer over the middle for a first down, but the Fighting Irish stalled from there. Clemson gets the football at its own 25 after a 31-yard punt.

Clemson-Notre Dame has become a modern rivalry

This will be the fourth time in the last five seasons that Clemson and Notre Dame have played, and though the rivalry does not have a long history with only six prior meetings the fact that so many of these games have had College Football Playoff implications has added to the intrigue for Saturday night. Clemson leads the series 4-2, with wins in the 2018 College Football Playoff semifinals and 2020 ACC Championship Game, and the Tigers also won a rain-soaked 24-22 epic in 2015 en route to the program's first CFP appearance.

Notre Dame has hit its offensive stride

The Fighting Irish suffered preseason injuries at wide receiver and then lost starting quarterback Tyler Buchner to a season-ending injury in the second game of the season. While Michael Mayer remains one of the top tight ends in the country, this is an offense that has pivoted to leaning on the run game for success. Since Sept. 24, when the Fighting Irish defeated No. 17 North Carolina in Chapel Hill, Notre Dame has run the ball the ball 233 times and is averaging 228 rushing yards per game. According to Notre Dame, those figures rank tied for seventh nationally in attempts and 13th in rushing average in that span. The Fighting Irish boast a deep backfield with Audric EstimeLogan Diggs and Chris Tyree all capable of putting up big numbers with quarterback Drew Pyne playing a role in the ground game as well.
