College football scores, rankings, highlights: Oklahoma falls, USC survives as top-10 teams show vulnerability

Week 4 of the college football season brought more fireworks as the last Saturday of September saw a pair of top-10 teams fall in what could lead to a shakeup in the rankings. Though the top five teams all got by unscathed, No. 6 Oklahoma lost to Kansas State for the third time in four years and No. 10 Arkansas lost to No. 23 Texas A&M in heartbreaking fashion.

With No. 4 Michigan tested in a win over Maryland, No. 5 Clemson needing double overtime to beat No. 21 Wake Forest and No. 7 USC narrowly surviving Oregon State, the upper crust of the sport looked vulnerable this week. Things were no different for No. 8 Kentucky, which needed to recover a late onside kick to ensure a 31-23 win over Northern Illinois. Even No. 1 Georgia appeared sloppy in a win over Kent State.

While No. 2 Alabama and No. 3 Ohio State took care of business with resounding victories over Vanderbilt and Wisconsin, respectively, Week 4 may have left of us with more questions than answers about how things will play out as conference schedules to heat up and temperatures begin to drop around the country.

Here's the recap of everything that went down with college football's ranked teams in Week 4.

Brock Bowers is having a DAY

Half: No. 1 Georgia 26, Kent State 13

Georgia hasn't been crisp today. Well, except for tight end Brock Bowers. The sophomore sensation has two carries, 77 ruching yards, two rushing touchdowns, four catches and 54 yards. Essentially, Bowers has been the lone bright spot for a Bulldogs' offense that has turned the ball over three times including quarterback Stetson Bennett IV's first interception of the year.

Quarterbacks dueling in Ames

Half: Baylor 17, Iowa State 14

Baylor holds a narrow lead over a feisty Iowa State squad at the half in Ames. Quarterbacks Blake Shapen and Hunter Dekkers have combined to complete 23 of 29 passes for 224 yards and four touchdowns combined to produce nearly all of the offense in this one. The rush defense has been on full display as both teams are averaging fewer than three yards per carry.

Penn State?

Late 2Q: Penn State 14, Central Michigan 14

Central Michigan has scored 14 unanswered at Penn State to tie it up late in the first half. Daniel Richardson just found Joel Wilson for a 14-yard score to Capt a 9-play, 67-yard drive. The Chippewas went punt, INT, punt to begin the game but have marched down the field for TDs on their last two possessions. No. 14 Nittany Lions appear to have fallen asleep at the wheel after gaining an early lead as 28-point favorites.

Kedon Slovis back

Early 2Q: Pitt 21, Rhode Island 7

After missing the second half of Pitt's loss to Tennessee in Week 2 and last week's game at Western Michigan, Kedon Slovis is back today for Pitt. The USC transfer quarterback is 5 of 7 early as the Panthers have jumped out to an early lead thanks to Israel Abanikanda. He's got 104 yards and two TDs on nine carries for the Panthers.

Maryland hanging with Michigan

End 1Q: Michigan 10, Maryland 10

Things are going very well for the Terrapins considering they fumbled the opening kickoff and were down 7-0 only four seconds into the game. When not turning the ball over, the Terps are moving the ball effectively against the Michigan defense. Taulia Tagovailoa has thrown for 74 yards and rushed for 16 to move the chains consistently. Meanwhile, after an impressive start, Michigan's offense fumbled just before the end of the first quarter after driving deep into Maryland territory. We might have a much closer game than anticipated today.

Bears, Cyclones knotted up

2Q: Baylor 7, Iowa State 7

The first quarter was a strange affair in Ames thanks to a few questionable calls, but the score is all knotted up early in the second quarter. The quarterbacks have completed 11 of their first 14 combined passes as the run defenses have showed up early on both sides.

Georgia a little sloppy early

End Q1: No. 1 Georgia 12, Kent State 3

The defending national champs haven't been crisp this afternoon. Quarterback Stetson Bennett IV only has 51 yards and threw his first pick of the year in the first quarter. The bright side for the Bulldogs is that tight end Brock Bowers continued his stellar season with a 75-yard touchdown run on the second play from scrimmage. It'll be interesting to see when Georgia pulls its starters considering the meat of the schedule is coming up.

Penn State's start

Late 1Q: Penn State 14, Central Michigan 0

No hangover effect early for Penn State after a big win at Auburn last week. The Nittany Lions went 59 yards for a TD on their first series and then used an INT to gain a short field, setting up this TD to make it 14-0 early. Sean Clifford is 6 of 6 with two TDs in the early going. Seems like the Nittany Lions may be one of the most underrated teams in the country right now at No. 14 in the AP poll.

Disastrous start

Early 1Q: Michigan 7, Maryland 0

What a terrible start for Maryland, as the Terrapins botch the opening kickoff in humiliating fashion, setting up the No. 3 Wolverines up for a touchdown eight seconds into the game. Maryland already behind as 17-point dogs on the road. Might take something legendary from Taulia Tagovailoa for the Terps to have a shot at the Big House.

Kansas-Duke

This game may sound like a Final Four matchup, but the Jayhawks and Blue Devils are humming on the gridiron. Dennis Dodd goes deep on this matchup to learn about the emergence of Kansas quarterback Jalon Daniels. This is the first 3-0 start for KU in 13 years.

Full top 25 picks

Five of our seven experts are above .500 against the spread picking every single game involving a top-25 team so far this season. We don't get to fish for the best spreads or opt out of any game. If a top-25 team is playing, we're picking it. So our cumulative record so far this season is pretty solid. Check out our panel's Week 4 picks at this link.

SEC picks

The final Saturday in September includes some scintillating matchups in the SEC that are bound to have conference and division title ramifications down the road. Barrett Sallee takes you on a spin around the conference and makes some picks for the games featuring SEC teams in Week 4.

Big Ten picks

As the Week 4 action approaches, let's take a deeper dive into the Big Ten slate and make some picks. I'll be particularly interested in Michigan playing its first quality opponent of the season. Maryland's defense isn't great by any stretch, but it's much better than anything the Wolverines have faced so far this season. Will be interesting to see if Jim Harbaugh feels compelled rack up some style points to stand out amid a schedule that may only provide rare moments of adversity.

Value Plays

Conference play is finally upon us as the vast majority of leagues deliver quality matchups in Week 4. Instead of searching through the dregs of mismatched nonconference games, this week finally gives us some battles between programs that know each other intimately. That's where real value can be found. Shehan is already 1-0 this week on these. Check out the rest here.

Tom Fornelli's Picks

Tom Fornelli got hot last week and is back with more picks. "What's even better than last week's performance is that I feel more confident in this week's picks -- and I felt pretty good about last week. There was a lot of value to be found, and it's still there as we head into the weekend. The market still hasn't entirely caught on to some teams and Week 1 overreactions are still course correcting. So let's get to it."

Conference play around the college football landscape is picking up with the arrival of the final weekend in September. Saturday's Week 4 action is full of top-25 teams making their conference game debuts for the 2022 season. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports throughout the day for college football coverage from the opening kickoff onward. Let's take a look at our expert picks for the best games in Week 4.

Tillman out vs. Florida

Tennessee wide receiver Cedric Tillman will not play in the Vols' SEC opener against Florida with a lower body injury, according to the Knoxville News. Tillman has been one of the Volunteers' best overall players with 17 catches for 248 yards and a touchdown. He posted 1,081 yards and 12 touchdowns in a breakout season for Tennessee in 2021 under Josh Heupel.

Travis expected to play

Florida State quarterback Jordan Travis is expected to start against Boston College on Saturday, according to ESPN. Travis suffered a leg injury against Louisville after completed 13-of-17 passes for 157 yards and two touchdowns in a 35-31 victory. However, he left the stadium on crutches. Backup Tate Rodemaker threw another two touchdowns to cap off the victory. Florida State is 3-0 for the first time since 2015.
