College football scores, rankings, highlights: No. 8 TCU rallies past No. 17 Kansas State, remains unbeaten

No. 8 TCU appeared to be in danger of dropping its first game this season on Saturday, but the Horned Frogs staged a second epic rally in as many weeks for a 38-28 Big 12 win over No. 17 Kansas State. TCU entered the game already battled tested, having come from 17 points down to beat No. 11 Oklahoma State 43-40 in two overtimes in Week 7. Down 18 points to the Wildcats in the second quarter, the Horned Frogs scored critical touchdowns on back-to-back possessions going into, and coming out of, halftime.

Finding ways to win is paying off. TCU remains undefeated and in command of the Big 12 Championship Game race under first-year coach Sonny Dykes.

Behind the strong running of Kendre Miller and veteran quarterback play of Max Duggan, the Horned Frogs scored 28 unanswered points to close the game. Miller ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns on 29 carries, and Duggan threw for 280 yards and three touchdowns as the Horned Frogs improved to 7-0 (4-0 Big 12). Without the rally, TCU would have joined No. 7 Ole Miss, No. 9 UCLA  and No. 14 Syracuse as previously unbeaten teams that suffered their first defeats during Week 8.

Some injury luck has contributed to TCU's success, too. Kansas State played nearly the entire game without star quarterback Adrian Martinez, who left the game due to injury in the first quarter. Martinez was quietly having a stellar season, and his status will loom large for the Wildcats (5-2, 3-1) as they try to remain firmly in the hunt for the Big 12 title.

Here is the full rundown of how ranked teams fared.

Clemson's defense

Late 4Q: Clemson 27, Syracuse 21

The switch from DJ Uiagalelei to Cade Klubnik will be the biggest storyline from this game, should Clemson hold on. But the Tigers' defense is the MVP today. Syracuse has punted on all six of its possessions in the second half, and the Tigers are on the cusp of completing a rally back from 21-7. Syracuse has just two first downs in the second half. Tigers need one more defensive stand for the win.

Tigers on top

Mid 4Q: Clemson 24, Syracuse 21

Cade Klubnik just went 2 for 2 on leading touchdown drives in this game for Clemson after coming on in relief of DJU. The true freshman has still thrown just two passes on non-two point conversion plays, but the Tigers have found some juice with him nonetheless. Syracuse now near midfield trying to reclaim some momentum in this crucial ACC battle of the unbeaten.

Cincinnati pulling away

4Q: Cincinnati 29, SMU 14

Cincinnati is using a strong defensive effort to lead SMU by two touchdowns in Dallas. The Bearcats hit a pair of touchdowns in the first half, but have had to settle for five field goals despite more than doubling up SMU in yardage through three quarters. After three quarters of struggles, SMU benched quarterback Tanner Mordecai and inserted highly-touted underclassman Preston Stone. However, the Mustangs still have not put points on the board in the second half.

Clemson cuts the deficit

Early 4Q: Syracuse 21, Clemson 16

Phil Mafah punches it one from a yard out to cap a 15-play scoring drive for Clemson with true freshman quarterback Cade Klubnik in for the ineffective DJ Uiagalelei. A Syracuse penalty kept that drive alive, and the Tigers threw it only twice. But it won't help DJU's case that it was Klubnik who was under center. Big finish coming at Death Valley.

Tennessee is just filthy

6:55 Q3: No. 3 Tennessee 58, UT-Martin 7

Just how good is Tennessee? This offense is shattering records.

Granted, it's been more than a decade since Tennessee was relevant on a national scale. But through seven games, Josh Heupel's crew has proven that it might be the best Tennessee offense of all time.

Ohio State dominating

Late 3Q: Ohio State 40, Iowa 10

Ohio State just now surpassed 200 total yards here late in the third quarter as C.J. Stroud finds Emeka Egbuka for 27, Marvin Harrison Jr. for 18 and then Egbuka again for a 13-yard score. That's as explosive as the Buckeyes have been -- or really needed to be -- at any point today as Iowa has continued to gift them great field position with five turnovers.

Clemson QB change

Late 3Q: Syracuse 21, Clemson 10

After DJU's third turnover of the day — two interceptions and a fumble — Dabo Swinney turns to true freshman Cade Klubnik as his Tigers try and claw back from an 11-point deficit at home against unbeaten Syracuse. DJU is just 13 of 21 for 138 yards. We'll see what Klubnik can do here as the Tigers look for a spark in a game with major ACC and national implications.

Bearcats clawing

Early 3Q: Cincinnati 23, SMU 14

After jumping ahead 17-0 early, Cincinnati is clawing to stay ahead of SMU. Bearcats just got a 52-yarder from Ryan Coe to make it a two-score game. Ben Bryant is just 9 of 21 through the air. Aside from a couple of big runs by Charles McClelland and Corey Kiner, Cincinnati's offense has been only OK on a down-to-down basis.

Upset watch

Start 3Q: Syracuse 21, Clemson 10

Clemson is trailing by 11 points starting the third quarter, but the Tigers have moved the ball well. All five of their possessions in the first half were nine plays or longer and covered at least 30 yards. Two of them ended in turnovers and a third resulted in a turnover on downs. This team is moving the football. It just needs to finish drives.

Sad half

Half: Ohio State 26, Iowa 10

If you'd said that Ohio State would have just 133 yards at halftime, you might think Iowa would be closer than 26-10. But three turnovers and a failed fake punt from the Hawkeyes have merely gifted the Buckeyes great field position. The Hawkeyes' only touchdown came on a scoop-and-score from the defense as their offense continues to sputter — putting it kindly. Spencer Petras is 6 of 14 for 49 yards and two interceptions. Clemson in trouble

Half: Syracuse 21, Clemson 10

The No. 5 Tigers are in deep trouble at home against No. 14 Syracuse in a battle of unbeaten ACC teams. The Tigers  got a 44-yard field goal from B.T. Potter just before half, but that'll be little consolation entering the locker room. The Tigers lead the Orange 257-174 in total yards and 17-11 in first downs but trail by two possessions largely because of a catastrophic turnover in the second quarter. DJU's fumble led to a 90-yard scoop and score for Syracuse and effectively a 14-point swing. Clemson gets the football to begin the third quarter.

Tennessee cruising

Late 2Q: Tennessee 45, UT-Martin 7

Since allowing a touchdown on UT-Martin's second drive, the Volunteers have amped things up defensively. Hendon Hooker is 18 of 24 through the air for 276 yards and three TDs. Jalin Hyatt already has six catches for 108 yards and a TD following his legendary game vs. Alabama last week. Vols appear to be in full command against a Skyhawks squad that is ranked at the FCS level.

Disaster for Clemson

Early 2Q: Syracuse 14, Clemson 7

Clemson was on the cusp of scoring to go ahead, but a DJ Uiagalelei fumble just entirely flipped the tone of this game. Ja'Had Carter adds to his earlier interception by scooping up the fumble and running 90 yards to put Syracuse ahead 14-7. Tigers are in a battle at home vs. an unbeaten ACC foe. Those are the types of game-changing plays that can turn a two-touchdown underdog into a serious upset threat.

Tennessee's offense is cooking

End Q1: No. 3 Tennessee 21, UT-Martin 7

The Volunteers' offense picked up right where it left off against UT-Martin. They racked up 203 yards and are averaging 6.8 yards per play after the first frame, and the Skyhawks haven't done anything to slow them down. Ramel Kenyton hauled in a short touchdown pass from Hendon Hooker to make it a 14-point game on the last play of the quarter. However, The Skyhawks marched right down the field on their second possession against a defense that looks like it's very hungover.

Cincinnati cruising

2Q: Cincinnati 10, SMU 0

The Bearcats are playing well early against SMU on the road. Cincinnati picked off quarterback Tanner Mordecai on the edge of the red zone and strung together an 11-play drive for the first touchdown of the game. Quarterback Ben Bryant is only 3 of 8 for 24 yards, but Bearcats running backs have rushed for 50 yards and a touchdown. Mustangs quarterback Tanner Mordecai is just 4 of 9 for 24 yards.

Deadlocked

End 1Q: Clemson 7, Syracuse 7

Clemson struck first with a 7-play, 71-yard scoring drive, but the Orange have proven they are here to play in a top-15 battle of unbeaten ACC teams. Garrett Shrader hit Sean Tucker for a 12-yard TD score with 5:30 left in the first quarter. Tigers were driving at the end of the first quarter when Ja'Had Carter intercepted DJ Uiagalelei. So it's Syracuse football to begin the second quarter. Shrader is 8 of 9 through the air.

Look out, Buckeyes

Mid 1Q: Iowa 7, Ohio State 3

Iowa quarterback Spencer Petras threw a horrendous interception on the game's first possession, but the Hawkeyes have an early lead on the road at No. 2 Ohio State. Why, you ask? Because of a defensive touchdown. After holding Ohio State to a field goal following the INT, Iowa punted and scored a defensive touchdown when Joe Evans sacked C.J. Stroud, scooped the football and scored. For full live blog coverage of the game, click here.

CFP picks

Seven weeks into the 2022 college football season, let's just say it has not played out as expected. One of the most chaotic seasons of the last 15 years enters the halfway point with Tennessee, USC, Ole Miss and perhaps even Texas in the College Football Playoff conversation while programs like Alabama and reigning national champion Georgia are not looking as consistently impressive as they have in the recent past. That's why we're back at the halfway point of the season with a handful of second-chance expert picks. Here's how we believe the rest of the 2022 college football season will play out.

Six Pack

From Tom Fornelli: "It has been a rough couple of weeks for The Six Pack. We followed up a 1-5 performance in Week 6 with a 2-4 performance last week. While one of our wins was LSU's upset over Florida, which helped offset some of the losses, we've still dug ourselves quite a hole on the season -- a hole I'm ready to start digging out of. You'll never see a picks column pick harder than this picks column will the rest of the season. Trust the Process."

Big Ten picks

With Week 8 of the college football season approaching, sole possession of first place in the Big Ten West is once again up for grabs as a wonky year in one of the sport's quirkiest divisions continues. If Purdue (5-2, 3-1 Big Ten) wins as a slight underdog at Wisconsin (3-4, 1-3), the Boilermakers will sit alone atop the standings ahead of Illinois (6-1, 3-1) since the Illini are off this week. Here are the Big Ten picks for this week.

SEC picks

It's going to be very difficult for the Week 8 slate in the SEC to match the drama and intensity we witnessed in Week 7. Still, the penultimate weekend of October is headlined by an underrated rivalry game that has very quietly become one of the most important games in the race to win the SEC West. Let's take a spin around the SEC and make picks against the spread for all of Saturday's action.

Upset Alert

A crazy Week 7 led to big gains as six more undefeated teams fell. After a rough few weeks, Upset Alerts delivered a pair of high-value money line picks to keep us alive for another week. Tennessee's victory over Alabama delivered a +228 return as the Vols beat the Tide for the first time in 15 years. This week, more undefeated teams put their records on the line.

Viewer's Guide

Conference landscapes will be shifting again on Saturday as the Week 8 college football schedule brings us some intriguing matchups from around the country. Passing the midway point in the season, all eyes are on conference title races and the sprint toward the College Football Playoff, and the picture will become a little clearer this weekend. It'll be a busy Saturday across the country, so here's a handy viewer's guide to help you navigate the action.

College football expert picks

We have passed the halfway point of the 2022 college football season and the time for attrition is here. With at least five games between ranked opponents on the slate for the third straight week, there is no doubt that College Football Playoff dreams will be crushed a couple weeks ahead of the first CFP Rankings being released. Be sure to stick with CBS Sports throughout the day for college football coverage from the opening kickoff onward. Let's take a look at our expert picks for the best games in Week 8.

Good news for Ohio State

As the Buckeyes prepare to take on an Iowa defense that ranks among the nation's best in many statistical categories, they will be close to full strength offensively. According to multiple reports, star receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba and running backs TreVeyon Henderson and Miyan Williams are expected to play. Ohio State has been without various skill players every week, which is frightening considering how effective that offense has been even while routinely missing stars.
