• Miami freshman LB Raphael Kirby injured his knee. It won’t need surgery, but “He will be out awhile,” coach Al Golden told the Miami Herald’s Manny Navarro. “Hopefully he’ll have a chance to get back by midseason.”  
  • DE Shaq Lawson was expected to be part of Clemson’s freshmen class, but he fell short of the school’s academic requirements and will enroll in Hargrave Military Academy for the fall. Lawson hopes to enroll at Clemson in January, Kerry Capps of OrangeAndWhite.com reported.
  • Maryland will petition the NCAA for a sixth year of eligibility for QB C.J. Brown. He broke his collarbone four snaps into the 2010 season and will miss all of this season with an ACL injury. Patrick Stevens of the Washington Times had the story. Maryland got more bad news on the injury front: Safety Matt Robinson’s injured left shoulder will keep him out three weeks, including the Sept. 1 season opener against William and Mary.
  • After 12 straight days of practice, the Tar Heels had Tuesday off. They celebrated with “skit night”, which gave TE Eric Ebron the chance to imitate head coach Larry Fedora. “They got me pretty good,” Fedora told the News and Observer’s Andrew Carter.
