Reigning champions Real Madrid were handed a defeat by Lille on Wednesday, one of several surprise results to close out Matchday 2 of the UEFA Champions League.

Lille's 1-0 win over the Spanish giants came courtesy of a penalty scored by Jonathan David in first-half stoppage time. It was the foundation for an attack-focused second half for Real Madrid, who switched on Kylian Mbappe to find an equalizer and took a flurry of shots at goal in the dying minutes of the game to no avail. The result snaps a 36 game unbeaten run in European play for Real Madrid, as well as an unbeaten run to start the season.

Elsewhere in Europe, Aston Villa's super substitute Jhon Duran ensured they would come out of their first Champions League game at home in four decades with a 1-0 win over Bayern Munich, ending their run of 42 games unbeaten in the Champions League group stage or league phase. A 10-man Juventus also came from behind to beat RB Leipzig 3-2, marking a first statement win for new manager Thiago Motta, while Benfica manager Bruno Lage made a statement of his own with a 4-0 victory over Atletico Madrid.

Monaco pull one back

A third for Benfica

Juventus back on level terms

68' Vlahovic has a brace of his own now, coming up with an impressive finish to equalize for a 10-man Juventus. This has easily been the most entertaining match on Matchday 2, and there's still 20 minutes on the clock.

Make it two for Liverpool

75' Salah makes his way to the edge of the penalty area and with time and space on his side, he shoots with his preferred left foot and gives Liverpool a 2-0 advantage over Bologna. Salah is now the first Liverpool player to score in five successive home games in the Champions League, and the third Premier League player after Arsenal's Thierry Henry and Manchester United's Ruud van Nistelrooy.

Dinamo Zagreb bag a second

66' Dinamo Zagreb now have a 2-0 lead over Monaco, courtesy of a stellar finish from Baturina. Monaco came into this game unbeaten but now run a real risk of losing today, while Dinamo could make a very impressive comeback from the 9-2 loss to Bayern on Matchday 1.

Mbappe comes on

57' Ancelotti goes to his bench and picks Mbappe to replace Endrick as they chase a goal against Lille. Mbappe has six goals to start the season, including in Real Madrid's Matchday 1 win over Stuttgart, so expectations are high that he will continue that form.

Leipzig win a penalty

64' Leipzig earn a freekick after Di Gregorio's red card and Luiz is called for a handball in his first action of the match. A VAR check assists the decision and Sesko steps up to complete a brace and give Leipzig a 2-1 lead over Juventus. For what it's worth -- the call against Luiz is down to the interpretation of the handball rule in UEFA competitions, which is not necessarily the same across Europe's top domestic competitions.

Red card for Juventus

59' Di Gregorio slides toward Openda to commit a foul, but he misses him and while moving his body, touches the ball with his hand outside the box. The referee shows him a red card after a VAR check, and so Juventus are down to 10 and relying on backup 'keeper Perin to close this game out. A penalty check is also underway...

Balogun comes on

Sesko scores for Leipzig

30' Sesko breaks the deadlock in Leipzig through a goal that technically starts with a save from Gulacsi. The hosts look to go forward really quick and Openda does the work of making a run down the left wing and then playing a perfect pass to Sesko, who races closer to goal and finishes off the chance with relative ease against Juventus.

Brugge with a banger

Balogun on Monaco's bench

USMNT forward Folarin Balogun -- himself named to Mauricio Pochettino's first roster -- will start Monaco's clash at Dinamo Zagreb on the bench. Monaco notched the biggest surprise of Matchday 1 by beating a 10-man Barcelona, while Zagreb have much room for improvement after losing 9-2 to Bayern Munich two weeks ago. Zagreb are under new leadership for Matchday 2 -- manager Sergej Jakirovic was fired two days after that lopsided loss, and Nenad Bjelica is now in charge. Here's a look at both teams' lineups.

Dinamo Zagreb starting XI: Nevistic, Ristovski, Bernauer, Theophile-Catherine, Torrente, Ademi, Misic, Baturina, Petkovic, Baturina

Monaco starting XI: Kohn, Vanderson, Kehrer, Salisu, Henrique, Zakaria, Camara, Akliouche, Minamino, Golovin, Embolo

Meanwhile in Spain...

Feyenoord goalkeeper Wellenreuther saved a second half penalty from Mirovski -- the second missed penalty of the day -- but Girona find their equalizer in the 74th minute courtesy of van de Beek. That joy was shortlived, thoguh -- Krejci's own goal five minutes later means Feyenoord now have a 3-2 lead and are a few minutes away from their first Champions League win of the season.
