  • Ben Lovejoy: Retires from league

Lovejoy announced his retirement from the NHL on Thursday, Chris Ryan of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

The 11-year veteran most recently played with New Jersey during the 2018-19 campaign before he was traded midseason to Dallas, where he was only utilized as added depth. He ends his career with 20 goals and 81 assists over 544 appearances at the NHL level.

  • Stars' Ben Lovejoy: Generates helper

Lovejoy had an assist and four blocked shots in Wednesday's 3-2 win over the Predators in Game 1.

Lovejoy is primarily a stay-at-home defender, having gone without a point in his last 17 appearances of the regular season, but he chipped in his helper on Mats Zuccarello's game-winning goal. Lovejoy is not likely to make much of an impact in postseason fantasy formats.

  • Stars' Ben Lovejoy: First two points with Stars

Lovejoy supplied a pair of assists in Thursday's 4-3 overtime win against the Kings.

In his third game since a deadline day deal with the Devils, Lovejoy opened his account with the Stars. He has seen his ice time drop by 2:12 since the trade, as he plays a third-pairing role with his new team. Lovejoy has nine points in 54 contests this year, and hasn't done enough in other categories to warrant much fantasy attention.

  • Stars' Ben Lovejoy: Donning Stars jersey for first time

Lovejoy will make his Stars debut Sunday versus the Blackhawks, Mike Heika of the Stars' official site reports.

Lovejoy will be the 14th defenseman to suit up for the Stars this season, as he was just brought in via trade from the Devils on Saturday. He doesn't provide much offensive promise, but Lovejoy is a solid stay-at-home defender. His veteran presence will be important as the Stars look toward the playoffs, as Lovejoy has a Stanley Cup ring from 2016.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Facing another absence

Lovejoy (undisclosed) is expected to miss another game Saturday with the Devils scheduled to face the Rangers, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.

Lovejoy is a candidate to be traded given that he's a veteran defenseman on an expiring contract. He was held out for the same reason against the Senators on Thursday, with the Devils managing to pitch a 4-0 shutout over the Senators in that one.

  • Stars' Ben Lovejoy: Acquired by Dallas

The Devils traded Lovejoy to the Stars on Saturday in exchange for Connor Carrick and a 2019 third-round draft pick, Mark Stepneski of the Stars' official site reports.

The writing was on the wall that Lovejoy was on his way out of New Jersey since he was intentionally held out of Thursday's game against the Senators. As a 35-year-old veteran, he'll set an example for a young cast of blueliners that has naturally experienced growing pains under first-time Stars coach Jim Montgomery. Lovejoy isn't a viable fantasy commodity, however, as he produced only two goals and five helpers over 51 games for the Devils this season. But he's a nice shutdown type, carrying over 59 hits and 77 blocked shots.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Curiously scratched Thursday

Lovejoy (undisclosed) will not play Thursday against the Senators, Rob Carlin of NBC Sports Washington reports.

Lovejoy and Marcus Johansson will both be held out for "precautionary reasons", which begs the question of whether they're actually on the verge of being traded. Time will tell, but it's worth noting that Lovejoy did struggle with an upper-body injury before returning to action Feb. 7.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Eased back into action

Lovejoy logged just 15:49 of ice time against the Islanders on Thursday, his first game back from a six-game stint on IR with an upper-body injury.

Lovejoy is averaging 17:12 of ice time this season, which indicates the team was being cautious about his minutes in his return to the lineup. Barring any setbacks, the blueliner should get back to an increased role moving forward, though his lack of offensive touch -- he hasn't broken the 10-point mark since 2015-16 -- limits his fantasy value.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Will return Thursday

Lovejoy (upper body) will rejoin the lineup Thursday against the Islanders, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.

While he tallied an assist in the game prior to his placement on injured reserve, Lovejoy owns just six total points on the season and a career-high mark of just 18 back in 2013-14. The veteran blueliner's return shouldn't shake up many fantasy leagues, with his biggest asset being his sound defensive play.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Remains sidelined

Lovejoy (upper body) will not suit up Tuesday against the Kings, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.

Lovejoy's presence at practice Monday was an encouraging sign, but it appears he'll take aim at Thursday's game against the Kings, at the earliest, to rejoin the lineup. Even if the veteran defenseman does return in the near future, the waiver wire in most fantasy leagues probably won't reflect it given his six points through 43 games.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Game-time call Tuesday

Lovejoy (upper body) could miss Tuesday's game versus Los Angeles, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.

Lovejoy remains on injured reserve, so the 34-year-old defenseman needs to be taken off IR before he can return to New Jersey's lineup. In 43 appearances this season, the veteran blueliner has only a goal and five assists for six points. Lovejoy should not be owned in the majority of leagues and formats.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Misses game-day skate

Lovejoy (upper body) wasn't able to participate in Thursday's game-day skate, effectively ruling him out against the Rangers, Mike Morreale of NHL.com reports.

Lovejoy will miss his fourth straight outing due to his upper-body issue. The blueliner notched three points in his previous six outings, but shouldn't be expected to be a regular offensive contributor. Once cleared to return, the veteran figures to bump Egor Yakovlev back down to the minors.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Takes twirl Tuesday

Lovejoy (upper body) was able to skate Tuesday, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.

Lovejoy wasn't able to practice, but the defenseman did hit the ice for a solo session as a notable step in his recovery. For now, he remains on injured reserve with a seemingly outside chance of drawing into Thursday's game against the Rangers.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Unable to practice

Lovejoy (upper body) didn't see the ice for practice Sunday, Chris Ryan of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

With news Sunday that Lovejoy was shifted to injured reserve, this news isn't surprising. It seems as though he'll miss at least Monday's contest in Pittsburgh, while there is no set timetable for his return yet.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Shifted to IR

Lovejoy (upper body) was placed on injured reserve Sunday, with the transaction retroactive to Jan. 15.

With Lovejoy's IR move backdated, he won't need to wait an additional seven days to return. However, Egor Yakovlev figures to be on hand with the parent club until Lovejoy proves physically fit to draw back into New Jersey's lineup.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Out again Saturday

Lovejoy (upper body) won't play Saturday against the Ducks, Amanda Stein of the Devils' official site reports.

Lovejoy will crack the scoresheet every now and then -- he's compiled one goal and five helpers over 43 games this season -- but he's mostly in charge of making life easier for New Jersey's goalies. His continued absence is a tough pillow to swallow for a team that's averaging 3.38 goals allowed per game this season -- 26th in the NHL.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Scratched with injury Thursday

Lovejoy will miss Thursday's game against the Islanders due to an upper-body injury, Chris Ryan of The Newark Star-Ledger reports.

It has yet to be determined whether it will be Egor Yakovlev or Steve Santini replacing Lovejoy against the Isles, but judging on offensive upside alone, the former would be the more tempting fantasy option if he gets the call. As for Lovejoy, he's more of a shutdown type, picking up 45 hits and 59 blocked shots through 43 games this season.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Carries offense in loss

Lovejoy scored a goal and an assist in Sunday's 3-2 loss to the Golden Knights.

The outburst snapped a 27-game scoring drought for Lovejoy, who last saw his name on the scoresheet Nov. 6. The veteran blueliner hasn't recorded double-digit points in a season since 2015-16, and with just one goal and five points through 38 games, his fantasy fortunes haven't improved despite Sunday's performance.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Offensive ineptitude continues

Lovejoy didn't factor into the scoring while recording one shot and a minus-1 rating over 17:33 of ice time during Monday's 5-2 loss to the Sharks.

Lovejoy has three assists in 26 games, with the last of those coming back on Nov. 6. His 17:33 of ice time in this one was the most the stay-at-home defenseman has played since Nov. 25, but he's still irrelevant in pretty much all formats.

  • Devils' Ben Lovejoy: Back from injury in blowout loss

Lovejoy was activated from the DL ahead of Tuesday's 8-3 loss to the Lightning, posting a minus-2 rating and blocking three shots in his return.

Lovejoy's 16:17 of ice time was the lowest among New Jersey's defensemen, putting him in line with his usual role as he returned from a lower-body injury. The 34-year-old blueliner came into this one sporting a team-high plus-5 rating, which he credits to working with a skills coach for the first time this offseason. Considering he's never eclipsed 20 points in a season, Lovejoy probably should have started working on his skills decades ago.
