  • Nick Spaling: Agrees to contract with Swiss League club

Spaling signed a one-year deal with Geneve-Servette HC of the Swiss League on Wednesday, Stephen Whyno of AP Sports reports.

Spaling has become something of a journeyman, playing for four teams since the start of the 2013-14 campaign. The veteran's 2015-16 season can, at best, be called disappointing as he notched a paltry 13 points in 58 contests split between San Jose and Toronto. The center is just 27 years old and could reinvent his game while playing in Europe, which gives him an outside chance of returning to NHL action in the future.

  • Sharks' Nick Spaling: Will play Wednesday

Spaling will make his Sharks debut Wednesday, skating on the fourth line, reports Kevin Kurz of CSN Bay Area.

Spaling was acquired in a trade Monday and will be skating alongside Dainius Zubrus and Chris Tierney. While that's not a promising spot for his production, coach Peter DeBoer mentioned Wednesday that he believes Spaling can play up the lineup when he gets comfortable. He may not be a great play right now, but he could be worth keeping an eye on if he climbs the depth chart.

  • Sharks' Nick Spaling: Heading to San Jose

Spaling was traded to the Sharks on Monday in addition to Roman Polak for Raffi Torres and second round draft picks in 2017 and 2018.

After being part of the Phil Kessel trade during the offseason, Spaling will now head out west. It has been a rough season for the 27-year-old, as he's tallied a meager seven points in 35 games. The winger leaves Toronto on a high note, however, after netting a goal and an assist against the Flyers in his final game with the Leafs. Due to the travel time, Spaling will not suit up against the Blues on Monday.

  • Maple Leafs' Nick Spaling: Will return Tuesday

Spaling (upper body) will return to the lineup Tuesday against the Panthers, Paul Hendricks of Leafs TV reports.

Spaling's injury-riddled 2016 campaign has allowed him to play in just 24 games thus far, but he'll finally get a chance to add another to it Tuesday. It's unclear where exactly the team plans to slot him in the lineup, but that should reveal itself either at morning skate Tuesday or during warmups in the evening.

  • Maple Leafs' Nick Spaling: Practices for first time since injury

Spaling practiced Monday for the first time since suffering an upper-body injury in mid-December, Jonas Siegel of TSN 1050 reports.

Given the fact that he hasn't played since mid-December, the center will likely need multiple practices before he'll be able to dress again. The team should continue to update his status as he nears a return to the lineup.

  • Maple Leafs' Nick Spaling: Resumes skating Tuesday

Spaling (upper body) resumed skating Tuesday, Terry Koshan of the Toronto Sun reports.

Spaling has been sidelined since he suffered an upper-body injury on Dec. 17 against the Sharks, so his return to the ice Tuesday is certainly a step in the right direction in his recovery. A more definitive timetable for his return to the Leafs' lineup should be established once the 27-year-old forward is able to return to practice with his teammates.

  • Maple Leafs' Nick Spaling: Set to miss extended amount of time

Spaling (upper body) is expected to miss an extended period of time due to the injury he suffered in Thursday's game against the Sharks.

It remains unclear exactly how Spaling suffered the injury, but coach Mike Babcock confirmed after the game that he will be out long-term. It's a tough blow for the Maple Leafs, although considering he's not really on the ice for his offense, he wasn't providing much fantasy value for fantasy owners anyway. We'll have to wait to find out a concrete timetable for his recovery.

  • Maple Leafs' Nick Spaling: Exits Thursday's game with injury

Spaling has been ruled out of the remainder of Thursday's game against the Sharks with an upper-body injury.

It isn't clear when or how Spaling suffered the injury, but it's apparently serious enough to hold the 27-year-old forward out of the remainder of Thursday's tilt. The Maple Leafs should provide an update on Spaling's status following Thursday's contest.

  • Maple Leafs' Nick Spaling: Gets first point after return from injury

Spaling picked up his first point since his return from injury in Wednesday's loss to Winnipeg. He set up Toronto's only goal in a 6-1 loss.

Spaling has never delivered more than 32 points in a season, but he's not really on the ice for offence. He's a hard-working lunch-bucket type who will drive opponents crazy with his dogged style. But it won't deliver him much fantasy value. This was Spaling's third point -- all assists -- this season.

  • Maple Leafs' Nick Spaling: Will return Monday

Spaling (upper body) will rejoin the lineup Monday against the Bruins, Paul Hendrick of Leafs TV reports.

Spaling missed the last three contests due to the upper-body injury, but it appears that streak will come to an end Monday. Spaling has just two points (both assists) through 15 games this season, but will return to a good matchup against a Bruins club allowing the seventh-most goals per game this season (2.95).

  • Maple Leafs' Nick Spaling: Out again Saturday

Spaling (upper body) won't play Saturday against the Bruins, Jonas Siegel of TSN Radio 1050 reports.

Saturday marks the third straight contest Spaling will miss with an upper-body injury. He practiced with the team earlier this week, but apparently still isn't healthy enough to return to game action. The 27-year-old forward's next chance to draw back into the Leafs' lineup will come Monday against Boston.

  • Maple Leafs' Nick Spaling: Returns to practice Wednesday

Spaling (upper body) returned to practice Wednesday, TSN's Mark Masters reports.

Spaling missed Tuesday's game against Colorado with an upper-body injury, but returned to practice Wednesday, indicating he should be good to go for Friday's tilt against the Hurricanes. The 27-year-old forward has tallied two assists in 15 games this season.

  • Maple Leafs' Nick Spaling: Out of lineup Tuesday night

Toronto head coach Mike Babcock said Spaling will not be in the lineup Tuesday night when the Leafs host the Avalanche, James Mirtle of The Globe and Mail reports, citing the center's various injuries and faceoff troubles.

Despite Spaling reportedly having dealt with three different injuries this season, he's made his way into all but three games thus far. Unfortunately, he has only recorded two assists and 10 PIM this campaign and his faceoff percentage has only been above 50 percent once in the past five games. You're likely to find plenty of skaters on the waiver wire that can offer more than Spaling in 2015-16.

  • Maple Leafs' Nick Spaling: Will return Monday

Spaling (undisclosed) will return to the lineup Monday against the Stars, Mark Masters of TSN reports.

Spaling has been sidelined since Oct. 24 because of the undisclosed issue, but was present at practice Monday and centered the third line alongside Daniel Winnik and Joffrey Lupul. He will now return to the lineup, likely working on the same line for Monday's contest against the Stars.
