  • Steelers' Cameron Heyward: Should be 100 percent by camp

Coach Mike Tomlin said Monday that he expects Heyward (groin) to be a full participant by the start of training camp, Nick Farabaugh of Steelers Now reports. Heyward currently is recovering from a cleanup procedure undergone to address a groin/core injury, but Tomlin said he's "not anticipating it to be a factor by the time we get to training camp." The veteran defensive end managed to finish 2023 with 33 tackles (25 solo), two sacks and one pass breakup in 11 games, despite playing through a core-muscle injury for much of the season, so he could bounce back this year if he's simply healthier. Heyward tallied a combined 20.5 sacks across his previous two seasons.

  • Commanders' James Pierre: Signs with Washington

Pierre signed a contract with the Commanders on Thursday. Pierre spent the last four seasons in Pittsburgh, where he suited up for 16 regular-season games in 2023 while mostly contributing on special teams (267 snaps). He now gets an opportunity to compete for a depth role in the Commanders' cornerback corps this offseason.

  • Steelers' Montravius Adams: Returns to Pittsburgh

Adams re-signed with the Steelers on a two-year deal Thursday, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Adams turns 29 in July and is coming off a 2023 in which he played a career-high 416 defensive snaps across 13 regular-season games for the Steelers. The veteran lineman finished with 24 tackles (11 solo) and one forced fumble.

  • Steelers' Miles Killebrew: Staying in Pittsburgh

The Steelers re-signed Killebrew to a two-year deal Wednesday, Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston reports. Killebrew will stay in Pittsburgh for the next two campaigns after first joining the team in 2021. While the 30-year-old can contribute as a reserve defender, most of his value comes from his work on special teams, which earned Killebrew his first Pro Bowl appearance a season ago.

  • Patriots' Armon Watts: Joining new squad

Watts is signing a contract with the Patriots on Wednesday, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Watts' contract details are unclear, but the 27-year-old will spend the 2024 campaign in New England after playing the 2023 season with the Steelers. The Arkansas product played 260 snaps on defense across 15 contests last season, recording 15 combined tackles, including 0.5 sacks.

  • Steelers' Cole Holcomb: Could be done

Holcomb's knee injury suffered last season could be career-threatening, Chris Mueller of 93.7 The Fan reports. Holcomb suffered a significant knee injury in Week 9 last season that saw him carted off the field and taken to the hospital. Mueller's speculation seems to arise from previous comments made by Steelers executive Omar Khan, as well as the addition of Patrick Queen in free agency. Ray Fittipaldo of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Feb. 29 that according to Khan, Holcomb was working hard but didn't have a timeline for a return.

  • Patrick Peterson: Released by Steelers

Pittsburgh is set to release Peterson, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports. Peterson played adequately for the Steelers last season, handling 1,045 defensive snaps across 17 regular-season games, but at 34 years old, the eight-time Pro Bowler isn't quite the player he once was. His release leaves Pittsburgh with $2.9 million in dead cap, but clears up almost $7 million in cap space for the team.

  • Steelers' Minkah Fitzpatrick: Makes 10 appearances in 2023

Fitzpatrick made 64 tackles (43 solo) and three pass breakups across 10 regular-season games in 2023. Fitzpatrick missed seven total games in 2023 due to a combination of knee and hand injuries, but he managed to return to health in time for Pittsburgh's wild-card playoff loss to the Bills, a game in which he logged 10 tackles (five solo). In just 10 regular-season appearances, five of Fitzpatrick's games saw him achieve double-digit tackle totals. The 27-year-old remains one of the league's true standout safeties, with big-play potential to lend him serious fantasy upside as well. Fitzpatrick has three years remaining on his contract with the Steelers.

  • Steelers' T.J. Watt: Just short of DPOY

Watt (knee) tallied 68 tackles (48 solo), 19.0 sacks, eight pass breakups, one interception, four forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and one defensive touchdown across 17 regular-season games in 2023. Watt missed Pittsburgh's wild-card loss to the Bills due to a Grade 2 MCL sprain suffered during the team's regular-season finale, but the typical recovery timetable of such an injury shouldn't impact his availability for the start of training camp. The star pass rusher narrowly lost out to Cleveland edge rusher Myles Garrett for Defensive Player of the Year honors, with voting split 165-140. There are no questions about Watt's impact for the Steelers defense and for fantasy, as he remains one of the few NFL players truly capable of achieving a 20.0-sack campaign. With two years remaining on his deal and just $18.7 million in dead cap for 2024, it's also worth noting that Watt is a worthwhile candidate for a restructure this offseason.

  • Steelers' Cameron Heyward: Recovering from surgery

Heyward underwent a cleanup surgery Tuesday to address a groin/core muscle injury, Tom Pelissero of NFL Network reports. Heyward missed six consecutive games due to a groin injury this past season, but he was able to return to action Week 9 and played the rest of Pittsburgh's slate. However, the veteran pass rusher still seemed to be hampered by injury even while back in the lineup, as he finished with just two sacks across 11 appearances, after having previously logged back-to-back seasons with at least 10 sacks. He could be more effective when back to full health in 2024, the final season of his four-year deal with the Steelers.

Porter suffered a concussion during Monday's wild-card contest against Buffalo and has been ruled out from returning, Steelers senior director of communications Burt Lauten reports. Porter was hurt during the third quarter and was initially deemed questionable to return but has since been ruled out. He finished the wild-card game with two tackles (both solo).

  • Steelers' Joey Porter: Questionable to return

Porter was evaluated for a concussion during Monday's wild card game against the Bills and is questionable to return, Burt Lauten of the Steelers' official site reports. The starting cornerback exited after making two tackles. Porter came into the game with 43 tackles, 10 passes defensed and an interception in his rookie season. Chandon Sullivan is his backup.

  • Steelers' Eric Rowe: Back on active roster

The Steelers elevated Rowe to the active roster Sunday. Rowe will join Pittsburgh's active roster for the fourth game in a row ahead of Monday's playoff opener against Buffalo. The 31-year-old was signed with the Steelers' practice squad in late November, and he's played a significant role while starting safety Minkah Fitzpatrick has been sidelined over the past three weeks. Rowe has played at least 86 percent of defensive snaps in each of these contests, tallying 29 tackles and two passes defended over that span. But, with Fitzpatrick set to return, it's unclear how much playing time Rowe will see Monday.

  • Myles Jack: Elevated to active roster again

The Steelers elevated Jack to the active roster Sunday. Jack will join Pittsburgh's 53-man roster for the fourth week in a row. The 28-year-old linebacker temporarily retired ahead of the season, but he's taken on a notable role since rejoining the Steelers' practice squad in November. Jack has played at least 60 percent of defensive snaps in each of the past three games, tallying 17 tackles and one sack over that span. He figures to once again play as many, if not more, snaps than fellow inside linebackers Mykal Walker and Elandon Roberts during Monday's wild-card matchup versus Buffalo.

  • Steelers' Alex Highsmith: Racks up seven sacks in 2023

Highsmith tallied 57 tackles (34 solo), including 7.0 sacks, along with two interceptions, three pass defenses, two forced fumbles and a touchdown over 17 games during the 2023 season. Highsmith recorded a career-high 14.5 sacks in 2022 and was unable to come close to that mark in 2023, but he still put together a decent stat line during his fourth professional season. The 26-year-old had some inconsistent performances but was on the field for 80 percent of the team's defensive snaps. He signed a four-year, $68 million contract extension with Pittsburgh ahead of the 2023 campaign, so he should continue to play a prominent role on the team's defense next year.

  • Steelers' Elandon Roberts: Tops 100 tackles in 2023

Roberts logged 101 tackles (68 solo), including 2.5 sacks, while recording two pass defenses over 16 games during the 2023 season. Roberts joined the Steelers on a two-year deal ahead of the 2023 campaign, and he topped 100 tackles for a second consecutive season. He led the team in tackles by a significant margin, as no other Steeler had over 68 tackles. Roberts will presumably remain in Pittsburgh in 2024 and should have a chance to play a prominent role once again.

  • Steelers' Elandon Roberts: Practices in full

Roberts (pectoral) was a full participant in Thursday's practice, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports. Roberts has been battling a pectoral injury over the last week or so, but after a full practice session Thursday, it seems as if he's been able to move past the issue. The eighth-year linebacker has recorded 101 total tackles, including 10 tackles for loss, in 16 appearances this season, and he'll look to add to those totals in Sunday's wild-card outing in Buffalo while helping make up for the absence of T.J. Watt (knee).

  • Steelers' Minkah Fitzpatrick: Ready for playoff opener

Fitzpatrick (knee) said Thursday he will suit up for Sunday's wild-card playoff game against the Bills, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports. Fitzpatrick missed three consecutive games to end the regular season, but he's recovered from his knee injury in time to return for playoff action. The standout safety's return will certainly boost Pittsburgh's prospects of containing Josh Allen and Buffalo's offense, though the loss of T.J. Watt (knee) will still be difficult to make up for.

  • Steelers' Elandon Roberts: Records limited practice Wednesday

Roberts (pectoral) was a limited participant in practice Wednesday, Teresa Varley of the team's official site reports. Roberts suffered a pectoral injury Week 16 versus Cincinnati, and the issue appears to still be lingering. The eight-year vet sat out Week 17 due to the injury but was able to return for the Steelers' season finale against Baltimore, though he was limited to just 39 percent of the team's defensive snaps. Pittsburgh coach Mike Tomlin said Tuesday that Roberts is expected to play in Sunday's wild-card game versus Buffalo, per Dale Lolley of the Steelers' official site.

  • Steelers' Minkah Fitzpatrick: Looking good for Sunday

Fitzpatrick (knee) was a full participant at practice Wednesday, Teresa Varley of the Steelers' official site reports. Fitzpatrick sat out of the Steelers' last three regular-season games due to a knee injury, but it now looks like he'll be ready to play in the wild-card round. He projects to start Sunday, and his presence dampens expectations for Josh Allen and Buffalo's offense somewhat.
