  • Pau Gasol: Storied career comes to close

Gasol announced his retirement from professional basketball Tuesday, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

Gasol hasn't seen any NBA action since the 2018-19 campaign, but he had been hopeful to make a comeback in the pandemic-shortened 2019-20 season until the Trail Blazers waived him amid his slow recovery from left foot surgery. The 41-year-old big man ended up taking an extended break from basketball before rebooting his career overseas with FC Barcelona in February, and he then suited up for the Spanish national team for the final time during the Summer Olympics in Tokyo in August. Though Gasol likely could have continued his playing career in Europe if desired, he'll ultimately call an end to an excellent career that spanned 19 NBA seasons and included six All-Star nods and two championships across stops with the Grizzlies, Lakers, Bulls, Spurs and Bucks.

  • Pau Gasol: Joining Barcelona

Gasol announced Tuesday that he has signed with FC Barcelona of the EuroLeague, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports.

The six-time NBA All-Star is headed overseas after not playing in the NBA since the 2018-19 season due to a foot injury. Considering Gasol is 40 years old, his NBA career is likely over at this point, but he will look to take a on veteran role with FC Barcelona and make a run at playing in the Summer Olympics in Tokyo.

  • Pau Gasol: Will decide on future in fall

Gasol said Tuesday that he's "feeling good" about the rehab process for his surgically repaired left foot and indicated that he'll likely make a decision on whether to continue his playing career in September or October, Tales Azzoni of the Associated Press reports.

Gasol hasn't played in a competitive NBA game since March 2019, when he was a member of the Bucks. He signed with Portland last summer but never appeared for the club before being released in November after he was a slow to bounce back from the foot procedure he required last May. The 39-year-old center seems to have turned a corner over the past few months, though he noted that he has yet to resume running or jumping. If his foot cooperates well once he's cleared for full on-court activities, Gasol said he'll attempt to play one final season in the NBA or in his native Spain. With the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo having been postponed until 2021, Gasol is hopeful to get through the 2020-21 season healthy enough to give himself "a chance" at representing his home country one last time on the international stage.

  • Pau Gasol: Wants to play in 2020 Olympics

Gasol said he hopes to have made a full recovery from his surgically repaired left foot in time to suit up for Spain in the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo, Ramona Shelbourne of ESPN.com reports.

Gasol has already ruled out a return to the NBA in 2019-20, as he's instead planning to take a more extended break after first requiring the procedure on his foot last May. The veteran big man initially hoped to have recovered from surgery early this season, but he was released by Portland in late November after it became apparent he wasn't close to a return. Depending on how his run with the Spanish national team goes this summer, Gasol is leaving the door open to return to the NBA in 2020-21 in the event teams are interested in signing the 39-year-old.

  • Pau Gasol: Will join Portland's staff

Trail Blazers coach Terry Stotts said Tuesday that Gasol will join Portland's coaching staff later this season after concluding rehab for his surgically repaired left foot, Casey Holdahl of the Trail Blazers' official site reports.

Gasol's slow recovery from the procedure he required last May prevented him from ever appearing in a game for the Trail Blazers before he was waived Nov. 20. Though Gasol hasn't formally closed the door on his playing career while he continues to recover in his native Spain, the fact that he's accepting a coaching job suggests he won't suit up again in 2019-20. Gasol will turn 40 years old during the upcoming summer, so it's difficult to imagine him landing another contact from an NBA team in any case.
