Tigers' Andrew Sears: Struggles in spot start Saturday

Sears allowed four runs on seven hits and one walk while striking out five batters over 4.1 innings in a no-decision against Colorado on Saturday.
Sears was recalled from Triple-A early in the day to make his fourth career MLB appearance (and second start). The southpaw got through two scoreless frames but then allowed two runs in each of the third and fourth innings. Sears did show good command with 51 of his 77 pitches going for strikes, but the seven hits he allowed were his most in a big-league appearance so far. Sears may return to the minors soon, as Jack Flaherty (forearm) could return from the injured list next week.

After making his first two big-league appearances out of the bullpen, Sears was called upon to start the second game of Friday's doubleheader with the Guardians. He ended up taking a no-decision put pitched effectively in a 4-3 loss, striking out four batters while yielding one earned run on four hits and two walks across 5.2 innings. Since he likely wouldn't have been available out of the bullpen for another two or three days, the Tigers sent Sears back to Triple-A to clear a spot on the active roster for lefty Brant Hurter (back), who was reinstated from the 60-day injured list.

The rookie southpaw came up just short of a quality start in his first MLB start, tossing 54 of 93 pitches for strikes and exiting the mound in line for his first victory, only to see the Detroit bullpen stumble in a 10-inning loss. Sears got tagged for five runs in four innings during his first appearance in late August, but over his last two outings he's delivered a 1.08 ERA and 5:2 K:BB in 8.1 frames. Sears, who worked in bulk relief for his major-league debut, didn't leave an encouraging first impression Sunday. The left-hander was the third pitcher to enter the game for the Tigers and threw just 45 of his 74 pitches for strikes, surrendering three extra-base hits on the afternoon and four of his five runs in the fifth inning. Manager A.J. Hinch said Sunday that Sears will get an extended look for the rest of the season, per Jackson Stone of MLB.com, but whether he'll serve as a starter or long reliever will be contingent upon Detroit's bullpen usage.

While working his way back from a left elbow osteophyte fracture, Sears had resided on Erie's IL all season before being cleared to begin a rehab assignment in mid-May. Over five starts between the rookie-level Florida Complex League and West Michigan, Sears compiled a 2.63 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 18:5 K:BB in 13.2 innings. He'll get some more time to knock off rust and build up his pitch count in the Midwest League before likely joining the Erie rotation at some point later this summer.

Sears enjoyed a breakout 2025 season, logging a 3.49 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 123 strikeouts in 111 innings across High-A and Double-A. He only made six starts at Double-A last year, and it's unclear how lengthy Sears' recovery will be.
