Player Outlook
Jason Foley relied on his sinker more than ever in 2023 (69.3% pitch usage) after adding a tick of velocity (97.2 mph average) on the pitch. 45 of Foley's 55 total strikeouts came via his sinker, which also yielded a 57.1% groundball percentage that was 14th-highest among qualified relievers. The 28-year-old also set career-best marks in games played (70), innings (69.0), WHIP (1.16) and holds (28) while leading Tigers relievers with a 2.82 WPA. Foley briefly took over closing duties in August and finished the year with 7 saves despite lacking whiffs (17.9%) and strikeouts (19.9%). The right-hander has been one of Detroit's most reliable relief pitchers over the past two seasons and should reprise his high-leverage role again in 2024. Even more save chances could be in his future, especially if Alex Lange's control issues persist.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Nails down seventh save

Foley struck out one in a perfect ninth inning Tuesday to record his seventh save of the season in a 4-2 win over the Rays. He needed only nine pitches (seven strikes) to dispatch the bottom of the Tampa Bay order. Foley has yet to blow a save or even give up an earned run this season, and the Tigers closer sports an 11:6 K:BB through 11 innings.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Picks up fifth save

Foley earned his fifth save of the season Tuesday against the Rangers after he allowed a hit and a walk over a scoreless two-thirds of an inning. Foley entered with a 4-2 advantage and needed just the final two outs, though he made things interesting by giving up a single and a walk to the first two batters he faced. The right-hander battled back quickly and retired the next two hitters on three pitches, and he's now a perfect 5-for-5 in save chances. Foley has surrendered just one unearned run through nine outings this season, and he appears to have a decent hold on the closer role as the only Detroit reliever with multiple saves.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Picks up win

Foley (1-0) allowed one hit in a scoreless inning Monday, striking out two and earning a win over the Mets. The Tigers won in the 10th inning after Foley quickly worked through the ninth. The 28-year-old has already converted two saves and earned a win this season as he's seemingly locked himself into Detroit's ninth-inning role. Foley has four punchouts through 2.1 innings so far.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Earns second save

Foley was perfect in two-thirds of an inning Sunday against the White Sox to earn his second save of the season. Foley appears to have won the closer role in Detroit, closing out his second game of the series sweep over the White Sox. While presumed closer Alex Lange struggled with his command in his first appearance Saturday, allowing three walks while earning one out, Foley has retired all four batters he's faced to seemingly solidify his hold on the job.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Back in action Friday

Foley (undisclosed) struck out three and allowed one hit over a scoreless inning of relief Friday in the Tigers' 6-1 win over Atlanta in Grapefruit League play. Foley was back in action for his fourth appearance of the spring and his first since March 7 after he had been shut down for a brief period with what manager A.J. Hinch termed as "mid-camp fatigue." The right-hander had struggled over his first three outings, but the time off appeared to do him some good, as he looked sharp in his return to the mound Friday. Foley should be positioned to open the upcoming season as one of the top setup options in front of closer Alex Lange.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Held out Sunday

Manager A.J. Hinch said that Foley (undisclosed) wasn't used in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Mets due to "mid-camp fatigue," Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Foley doesn't look to be dealing with a legitimate injury, but he could be dealing with a case of "dead arm" after allowing three runs on three hits and two walks over 2.2 innings in three appearances so far this spring. He presumably isn't in any real danger of opening the season on the injured list but may rest for a few days before making his next Grapefruit League appearance.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Uneven start to spring

Foley tossed a scoreless inning Thursday in Grapefruit League action against the Blue Jays and now has a 10.13 ERA this spring. Foley has allowed three runs across 2.2 innings this spring, so it's a very small sample size. The righty was effective for the Tigers last season, posting a 2.61 ERA and 1.16 WHIP across 69 innings, and he should be able to shake off this relatively slow start. Foley figures to slot in as a setup option ahead of Alex Lange, though he could see save opportunities if Lange struggles with command like he did in 2023.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Records another save Saturday

Foley pitched a scoreless ninth inning with two strikeouts to record the save in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Guardians. Foley now has seven saves this season, with three of them coming in his last four appearances as he's taken over as Detroit's primary closer, displacing Alex Lange. Foley has a strong 2.63 ERA overall, though his ERA in August sits at 4.32, in part due to allowing three earned runs in an outing Wednesday. As long as the righty displays better command than Lange and avoids blowups, he should stick as the team's top option for saves.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Escapes with sixth save

Foley recorded his sixth save of the season in the first game of Friday's doubleheader against the Guardians, giving up a run on two hits while striking out one in the ninth inning. Steven Kwan led off the final frame with a triple, but Foley had a three-run cushion to work with and was able to minimize the damage. Alex Lange continues to deal with control issues, posting an 8:10 K:BB through 4.1 innings in August, but Foley is facing his own struggles as the next man up in the closer role. Foley has been tagged for four runs on six hits, including two homers, in his last two appearances.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Goes two innings for save

Foley picked up the save in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Twins. He allowed one hit while striking out four over two scoreless innings. Foley got the Tigers out of a jam in the eighth inning, then tossed a perfect ninth to pick up his third save of the campaign and his first since April 25. Though Foley has operated in high-leverage situations all year as a setup man for closer Alex Lange, he has struggled when given the opportunity to pick up saves, blowing two of his five chances this season.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Takes second loss

Foley (2-2) blew the save and took the loss in Sunday's 7-5 loss against the Diamondbacks. He allowed four runs on four hits and a walk over one inning. Foley had a chance to earn his first save since April 25 as he was called upon to protect a two-run lead in the ninth inning. After recording the first out, he allowed the next three Diamondbacks to reach safely before Christian Walker roped a two-out double, putting the Tigers behind 6-5 and ultimately handing Foley the loss. The 27-year-old Foley had allowed just one earned run in his last 11.2 innings prior to Sunday's outing. He still sports a solid 2.63 ERA, 1.13 WHIP and 22:6 K:BB through 27.1 innings this season. With Alex Lange struggling, the Tigers may give Foley another shot in the ninth.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Secures second save

Foley fired 1.1 scoreless innings and recorded two strikeouts to earn the save Tuesday in Milwaukee. The 27-year-old recorded the final out of the eighth inning and retired the side in order during the ninth with ease, taking advantage of the fact Alex Lange was apparently unavailable after he pitched each of the previous two days. Foley and Lange now have two saves apiece this season, though Lange should still be considered the favorite to close since he's dominated work in the ninth inning (seven appearances).

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Takes first loss Friday

Foley (0-1) allowed a run on two hits while not retiring a batter to take the loss Friday against the Orioles. Foley worked the bottom of the ninth inning in a 1-1 game and promptly allowed singles to Ryan Mountcastle and Anthony Santander. With runners on first and third, a fielder's choice by Adam Frazier ended the game. Foley has still been solid this year with a 2.25 ERA and a save across nine appearances, though the struggling Detroit offense generally makes the margin of error fairly slim for the pitching staff.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Figures to have prominent role

Foley figures to have a prominent relief role for the Tigers this season with several key members of last year's bullpen departing in the offseason, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Gregory Soto is the most significant departure, as the lefty led the Tigers in saves last year. However, Joe Jimenez, Michael Fulmer and Andrew Chafin are also gone. That leaves the likes of Foley, Alex Lange and Jose Cisnero in a position to take on more prominent roles, though it's unclear who might emerge as the closer. Foley recorded a 3.88 ERA and 1.38 WHIP across 60.1 innings in 2022. However, he only tallied 43 strikeouts in that time, so the righty doesn't profile as an overpowering pitcher, which could make him more of a setup option.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Brought up from Toledo

The Tigers recalled Foley from Triple-A Toledo on Thursday. He'll assume the 26-man active roster spot of Joey Wentz, who was optioned to Toledo following his first MLB start in Wednesday's 9-0 loss to the Athletics. Foley will give the Tigers a fresh arm in the bullpen for Thursday's series finale.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Sent to minors

The Tigers optioned Foley to Triple-A Toledo on Sunday. Foley was moved off the 28-man active roster to clear a spot for shortstop Javier Baez (thumb), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list in a corresponding move. Over his five relief appearances with Detroit spanning 5.2 innings, Foley gave up two earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out zero.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Decent shot at roster spot

With the Tigers sending down a few relievers Monday, Foley now appears more likely to make the Opening Day roster, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Bryan Garcia was optioned to Triple-A Toledo, while Jacob Barnes, Miguel Diaz and Wily Peralta were all optioned to minor-league camp Monday. Foley is on the 40-man roster, which helps his chances of sticking around as the roster is trimmed down further. The 26-year-old would likely slot in as a low-leverage reliever for the Tigers with limited fantasy appeal.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Sent to Toledo

The Tigers optioned Foley to Triple-A Toledo after Sunday's 2-1 loss to the Blue Jays, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Foley tossed a scoreless sixth inning Sunday, but he issued two walks and needed 23 pitches to retire the side. The Tigers' decision to demote Foley likely has less to do with how he looked Sunday than it does the team's desire to add another fresh arm to the bullpen ahead of Monday's game against the Twins.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Recalled from Triple-A

Foley was recalled by the Tigers on Friday. Foley made his first four major-league appearances earlier in the season, allowing two runs in five hits despite striking out just two batters. He didn't walk any opposing batters but hit three of them. Erasmo Ramirez was designated for assignment to clear a bullpen spot.

  • Tigers' Jason Foley: Sent to Triple-A

Foley was optioned to Triple-A Toledo following Monday's game against the Royals, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Foley surrendered one run on two hits in one inning Monday, and he'll head down to the minors after two other Detroit arms suffered injuries in the series opener. The team will likely call up multiple fresh arms Tuesday after deploying nine different pitchers.
