Abbott was recalled from Triple-A Rochester on Sunday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Abbott was sent to Rochester on Aug. 20 but will rejoin the Nationals after spending the past few weeks in the minors. The right-hander has a 7.48 ERA across 27.2 frames in the big leagues this season, so he's likely to fill a low-leverage role out of the bullpen.... See More ... See Less

Nationals' Cory Abbott: Sent to Triple-A
The Nationals optioned Abbott to Triple-A Rochester on Sunday. Abbott was sent back to Triple-A to make room on the 26-man active roster for right-hander Mason Thompson (knee), who was reinstated from the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. During his latest stint with the Nationals, Abbott made 14 appearances out of the bullpen and compiled an 8.37 ERA and 1.94 WHIP over 23.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Collects win in relief
Abbott (1-1) recorded the win in Friday's 8-2 victory over the A's, allowing a hit and a walk over 1.1 scoreless relief innings. He struck out one. Joan Adon (leg) left the game after three innings due to cramps, and after Abbott worked the top of the fourth, the Nats took the lead for good in the bottom of the frame. The 27-year-old right-hander has done little to earn a high-leverage role this season, and over 14.1 innings since the beginning of July he's been saddled with a 5.65 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 13:9 K:BB. With Washington more focused on the workloads of its young rotation arms than on winning, however, there could be plenty of long-relief innings available for Abbott down the stretch.... See More ... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Beginning Game 1 on mound
Abbott will begin Game 1 of Saturday's doubleheader against the Cardinals on the mound, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. Abbott will start the game with a 3-2 count against Paul Goldschmidt after Friday's game was suspended during the third inning. The 27-year-old righty holds a 4.24 ERA and 1.53 WHIP through 17 innings this season and figures to pitch two or three frames Saturday.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Returns to minors
The Nationals optioned Abbott to Triple-A Rochester on Monday. Abbott will return to the minors after he served as the Nationals' 27th man for Sunday's doubleheader with the Mets. He appeared out of the bullpen in the Nationals' 8-2 loss in the second game, striking out a batter over two scoreless innings while allowing one hit and one walk.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Up for doubleheader
The Nationals recalled Abbott from Triple-A Rochester and designated him as the 27th man ahead of the second game of Sunday's doubleheader with the Mets, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Abbott has been a full-time starter at Rochester this season and will be available on four days' rest, so he'll be able to provide the Nationals with plenty of length out of the bullpen if the team's starter for the second game of the twin bill -- Jake Irvin -- isn't able to work deep into the contest. Expect Abbott to return to Rochester immediately after the game concludes.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Moved to Triple-A
Washington optioned Abbott to Triple-A Rochester on Tuesday, Andrew Golden of The Washington Post reports. Abbott was only up with the Nationals for two days before being demoted back to Rochester. The right-hander heads back to Triple-A to make room for Jake Irvin, who will be called up to fill the opening in the big-league league rotation Wednesday versus the Cubs.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Moves up from Triple-A
The Nationals recalled Abbott from Triple-A Syracuse on Monday. Abbott posted a 5.25 ERA over 16 appearances (nine starts) with the Nationals last season, and though he maintained a 6.46 ERA in his first five starts with Syracuse in 2023, he struck out 12 over 5.2 innings his last time out Friday. In a corresponding move, the Nationals placed Chad Kuhl (foot) on the 15-day injured list. Kuhl's spot in the rotation is due to come up Wednesday against the Cubs, and manager Dave Martinez acknowledged that Abbott could be called upon to make the start if he isn't needed in relief in the first two games of the series with Chicago, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com.... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Stuck with fifth loss
Abbott (0-5) took the loss in the first game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Mets, giving up four runs (three earned) on five hits and four walks over four innings. He struck out six. The 27-year-old will head into the offseason still looking for his first career win in the majors. Abbott tossed 48 of 88 pitches for strikes, and he finishes the season having served up 12 homers in 48 innings for the Nationals (2.25 HR/9) to drive his 5.25 ERA. He's unlikely to seriously compete for a rotation spot in 2023 unless Washington deals with another rash of pitcher injuries.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Start rained out
Abbott won't make his scheduled start Monday against the Mets as the game has been postponed due to inclement weather, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The two teams are now set to play a doubleheader Tuesday, with Abbott slated to start Game 1, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com. Paolo Espino is in line to take the mound for the nightcap.... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Fans seven in fourth loss
Abbott (0-4) took the loss Monday, giving up five runs (four earned) on three hits and three walks over five innings as the Nationals were routed 8-0 by Atlanta. He struck out seven. The rookie right-hander got little help from his offense or defense, but Abbott also did himself no favors by serving up homers to Matt Olson in the fourth inning and Marcell Ozuna in the fifth. Abbott has a 5.59 ERA, 1.55 WHIP and 16:9 K:BB through 19.1 innings in September, and he'll likely make one more appearance this season against the Phillies over the weekend.... See More ... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Lasts three innings in start
Abbott did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing two runs on five hits and three walks over three innings in a 4-3 loss against the Orioles. He struck out three. Abbott got the start Tuesday but could not capitalize as he needed 72 pitches to get through three innings, surrendering two runs in the process. He has been much more effective working out of the bullpen this season, posting a 2.00 ERA over nine innings in relief compared to a 5.19 ERA through 26 innings in six starts. He owns a 4.37 ERA and 1.31 WHIP through 35 innings in total this season.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Strikes out five Wednesday
Abbott allowed a run on five hits and no walks while striking out five over 4.1 innings in a no-decision versus the Cardinals on Wednesday. Abbott was solid, but Paul Goldschmidt hit a solo home run to account for the lone run on the right-hander's line. Abbott pitched two scoreless innings of relief over two appearances since the start of the month, most recently Sept. 4; therefore, he was likely to face at least some restrictions. He still threw 88 pitches (56 strikes) and fared well against a division-leading club. Abbott carries a 4.06 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 29:13 K:BB through 31 innings into his next outing, which tentatively projects as a home start versus the Orioles next week if he remains in the rotation.... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Makes return to majors
The Nationals recalled Abbott from Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday. Abbott was demoted to Triple-A last week to clear a spot in the rotation for Cade Cavalli, but Abbott will end up reclaiming a starting role after Cavalli was placed on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with right shoulder inflammation. Since the Nationals plan to shut Cavalli down for the next two weeks before he's even cleared to resume throwing, Abbott could be in line for multiple turns through the rotation. Abbott, who owns a 4.74 ERA and 1.22 WHIP over 24.2 innings with the big club this season, will be available out of the bullpen Wednesday against the Athletics, but he's expected to slot into the rotation at some point during this weekend's series with the Mets, per Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com.... Nationals' Cory Abbott: Sent to minors
Abbott was optioned to Triple-A Rochester after Wednesday's 3-1 win over the Mariners, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. The 26-year-old was shifted from the rotation to the bullpen over the weekend and fired two scoreless frames Tuesday against the Mariners, but he's now headed back to Triple-A. Abbott was demoted to make room on the big-league roster for prospect Cade Cavalli, who is scheduled to make his MLB debut Friday versus the Reds.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Crushed for seven runs
Abbott (0-1) allowed seven runs on seven hits and five walks over 3.2 innings Sunday, striking out two and taking a loss against the Phillies. Abbott never really found a groove Sunday as he gave up four homers in the short start, including three in the fourth frame. It was his second MLB start of the season, and he'd allowed just one run in nine frames with the big-league club before the rough outing. The 26-year-old righty saw his ERA climb to 5.68 with an 11:8 K:BB on the year. Assuming he stays in the rotation, Abbott is projected to face the Padres at home next week.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Pitches well in first start
Abbott did not factor into the decision Tuesday against the Mets, allowing no runs on two hits while striking out three and walking two over five innings. Abbott was called upon to start for a thin Nationals rotation and rose to the occasion, throwing 51 of 76 pitches for strikes across five frames. It was his fourth appearance of the season and his first as a starter. He pitched sporadically in relief twice in July and once in June. The righty has allowed just one earned run across nine innings this season for the Nats, and will take a 1.00 ERA into his next appearance.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Still in line to start Tuesday
Abbott remains in line to start Tuesday's home game against the Mets, even though he appeared out of the bullpen in Sunday's 5-0 win over the Cardinals, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. Even though he was named a starter for the series against the Mets in advance of Sunday's contest, Abbott surprisingly entered the game in the ninth inning with the Cardinals holding a five-run lead. Abbott struck out two over the 21-pitch scoreless inning, which manager Dave Martinez clarified afterward was something that the right-hander asked to do in lieu of throwing a traditional between-starts bullpen session. The impromptu relief appearance shouldn't affect Abbott's workload Tuesday, but the fact that he hasn't pitched more than 4.1 innings in any of his outings for the big club or Triple-A Rochester this season means he likely won't work deep into his upcoming start.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Recalled by Washington
Abbott was recalled by the Nationals on Saturday. He has given up one run while striking out four in three innings over two MLB appearances this season. Abbott will presumably pitch in low-leverage situations out of the bullpen, but he could also be an option to serve as a spot starter. He's started eight of his 12 appearances at the Triple-A level between the Nationals' and Cubs' affiliates this year.... See More ... See Less -
Nationals' Cory Abbott: Back with big club Sunday
The Nationals recalled Abbott from Triple-A Rochester ahead of Sunday's game against Atlanta, Jessica Camerato of MLB.com reports. Abbott is back with the Nationals three days after he was returned to the minors upon being designated as the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader with the Mariners. He covered two frames in relief in the first game of the twin bill that day and should be available as a multi-inning option Sunday behind starter Erasmo Ramirez, who won't work deep into the contest in what will be a bullpen day for Washington....
