Sandoval will start for Mexico in Monday's WBC semifinal game against Japan, Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com reports. Sandoval will get a big spring test against a loaded Japanese lineup that will include Angels teammate Shohei Ohtani. This will be Sandoval's second start in the WBC -- in his first outing, he allowed one run on two hits and two walks while striking out two batters in three innings against Team USA, who Mexico will face in the final if able to advance. The southpaw also got into two Cactus League games with the Angels prior to the WBC, allowing one run on three hits and posting a 6:0 K:BB over five frames.... See More ... See Less

Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Inks one-year deal
Sandoval and the Angels agreed on a one-year, $2.75 million contract Friday to avoid arbitration, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. The 26-year-old started 27 games with Los Angeles in 2022, compiling a 2.91 ERA and 1.34 WHIP with 151 strikeouts over 148.2 innings. Sandoval will head into spring training locked into a mid-rotation role for the Halos.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Ends season on high note
Sandoval allowed five hits and one walk with six strikeouts over six scoreless innings in Monday's extra-inning loss versus the Athletics. He did not factor into the decision. After failing to record a quality start in any of his previous four starts entering Monday, Sandoval turned in one of the better starts of the season. He allowed one or fewer walks for just the seventh time. He finishes the 2022 campaign with a 2.91 ERA in 148.2 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Rough second inning
Sandoval did not factor into the decision Tuesday, allowing three runs on six hits and two walks over 5.1 innings against Oakland. He struck out four. Sandoval was mostly effective Tuesday but had trouble in the second inning, needing 29 pitches to finish the inning and allowing all three runs he would surrender on the night to score. He may have been able to record the quality start but was pulled with 94 pitches in favor of a R/R matchup after recording a strikeout to begin the sixth inning. The southpaw has now failed to record a quality start in each of his last four outings after recording three straight prior. He still owns a strong 3.09 ERA on the season and tentatively next faces Oakland again next week.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Sleeper pitchers for Week 26 (Sept. 26-Oct. 5)
Sandoval has had a weird year, maintaining a low ERA but struggling with efficiency and coming up short in strikeouts. Still, he'll be facing the 29th-ranked Athletics lineup twice.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Strikes out seven in win
Sandoval (6-9) allowed two runs on three hits and four walks while striking out seven over five innings, earning the win Tuesday over the Rangers. Sandoval has been effective lately, as this was his ninth straight start of two or fewer earned runs. The four walks matched his season high, a mark he's reached five times in 25 starts this year. The southpaw is now at a 3.01 ERA, 1.35 WHIP and 141:57 K:BB through 137.1 innings. Sandoval is tentatively projected for a favorable home start versus the Athletics next week.... See More ... Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Solid against Guardians
Sandoval allowed two earned runs on seven hits and no walks while striking out three across 5.1 innings Wednesday against the Guardians. He did not factor into the decision. Sandoval induced nine groundball outs and needed only 81 pitches to record his 16 outs. However, he still got the early hook after allowing five hits across his last 1.1 innings. Nevertheless, Sandoval has allowed two earned runs or fewer in eight consecutive starts, during which he's maintained a 1.86 ERA with a 43:14 K:BB across 48.1 frames. For the season, Sandoval maintains a 2.99 ERA with a 134: K:BB in 132.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Takes no-decision Wednesday
Sandoval allowed one run on six hits and one walk over five innings but did not factor in the decision against Detroit on Wednesday. He struck out four batters. Sandoval was solid in the outing, giving up only one run on a Spencer Torkelson homer. The lefty hurler did labor somewhat with 87 pitches over five innings, but he was in line for the win until the Tigers staged a ninth-inning comeback. Sandoval has allowed two or fewer earned runs in each of his past seven starts, posting a 1.67 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 40:14 K:BB across 43 innings during that stretch.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Sleeper pitchers for Week 23 (Sept. 5-11)
Sandoval has exhibited better control over his past three starts, helping him to get the most out of his whifftastic changeup and slider. It all started with a complete-game shutout against the Tigers, and he's facing them again this week.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Possible waiver wire pickups
If Sandoval's whole season had gone like his past three starts, he would have been universally rostered from start to finish. With his latest gem Wednesday against the Yankees, he's now allowed three earned runs in his past 22 innings, striking out 21 and walking just three. That last number is key. His changeup and slider are both big-time bat-missers, so the main way he loses is by beating himself, which he's done time and time again this year. Is a three-start stretch clear evidence that he's turned the corner? No, but considering he's in line to face the Tigers in his next start, now is an excellent time to bet on him.... See More ... Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Quality versus Yankees
Sandoval (5-9) earned the win Wednesday over the Yankees. He allowed two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out seven over seven innings. Sandoval gave up both runs in the fifth inning, but Shohei Ohtani's three-run home run covered the damage in the sixth. This was Sandoval's third straight quality start, which comes after a stretch of five straight starts in which he didn't complete six frames. The southpaw now has a crisp 3.02 ERA on the year, though his 1.34 WHIP and 127:52 K:BB through 122 innings remain somewhat concerning. He's projected for a favorable home start versus the Tigers next week.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Takes ninth loss
Sandoval (4-9) allowed five runs (one earned) on five hits and one walk while striking out five across six innings to take the loss Thursday against the Rays. Sandoval allowed all five runs in the third inning. Only one run was earned, but Sandoval allowed a triple and a home run in the frame so he was still hit hard. Though it comes with the caveat of Thursday's performance, Sandoval has been charged with two or fewer earned runs in five consecutive starts. That has helped him bring his ERA down to 3.05 on the season while also posting a 120:50 K:BB across 115 frames.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Shuts out opponent
Sandoval (4-8) earned the win against Detroit on Friday, pitching a four-hit shutout while striking out nine and walking none. Sandoval was incredibly efficient and accurate in his complete game shutout Friday. He threw 73 of 97 pitches for strikes, limiting Detroit batters to four hits and no walks. The lefty had not completed six innings since July 9. Sandoval earned a quality start in the contest, his eighth of the year. He has earned a quality start in each game this season that he has gone six or more innings. The impressive outing lowered his ERA to 3.14.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Walk issues persist
Sandoval (3-8) allowed two runs on five hits and four walks while striking out four in five innings, taking the loss Friday versus the Twins. The Angels' offense mustered just seven baserunners, giving Sandoval no run support. He still had his own problems, walking a tied-for-season-high four batters for the second start in a row and the fourth time in 19 outings this year. He also gave up a two-run home run to Gilberto Celestino in the second inning. Sandoval has a decent 3.42 ERA, but his 1.49 WHIP and 106:49 K:BB through 100 innings this year are concerning marks. The lefty has gone 12 straight starts without a win, a streak he'll try to snap in a projected road start in Detroit next week.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Fires 5.1 scoreless frames
Sandoval registered a no-decision during Friday's 4-3 win against Seattle, allowing three hits and four walks with five strikeouts in 5.1 scoreless innings. Sandoval put multiple runners on in four of his six innings but prevented any Mariner from passing second base and ultimately finished without allowing an earned run for the first time since his first three starts of the season. Control remains an issue for the 25-year-old as the four free passes tie a season high and he's now walked multiple batters in 11 straight starts. Sandoval carries a 3.41 ERA and 1.47 WHIP into his next start, scheduled for midweek against Minnesota.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Goes three frames in loss
Sandoval (3-6) took the loss during Saturday's 7-2 defeat to Atlanta, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks with four strikeouts in three innings. Sandoval surrendered two runs on three hits in the first inning and another three runs on five baserunners in the third, tying his shortest outing of the campaign and posting a season worst 25 game score. The 25-year-old has now gone winless in his last nine starts -- his last victory came on May 22 -- with Los Angeles losing eight of the contests. Sandoval carries a 3.43 ERA and 1.50 WHIP into his next start, scheduled for next weekend against Texas.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: No help in Friday's loss
Sandoval (3-5) allowed four runs (two earned) on seven hits and three walks with three strikeouts in 4.2 innings, taking the loss versus the Dodgers on Friday. Sandoval wasn't all that sharp in the contest, but that likely didn't make much of a difference Friday. Dodgers ace Clayton Kershaw took a perfect game through seven innings, giving the Angels' offense nothing to work with, which left Sandoval had no support in his third consecutive loss. The 25-year-old southpaw now has a 3.00 ERA, 1.43 WHIP and 87:37 K:BB through 81 innings in 15 starts overall. He's given up 10 runs (eight earned) in 16 innings in July.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Strikes out 10 batters in loss
Sandoval (3-4) took the loss against the Orioles on Saturday, allowing one run on five hits while striking out 10 and walking two over 6.1 innings. Sandoval did everything he could to keep the Angels in the game, but his offense gave him no support and he took the loss. He did earn a quality start, his seventh of the year. The lefty threw 61 of 95 pitches for strikes in the game. This comes one game after he allowed five runs in five innings, so it appears that Sandoval is back on track. He will take a 2.95 ERA into his next outing.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Fans nine but takes loss
Sandoval (3-3) took the loss against Houston on Saturday, allowing five runs on eight hits and two walks over five innings. He struck out nine batters. Sandoval had his swing-and-miss stuff working in the contest, as he racked up 18 whiffs and tied a season high with nine strikeouts. However, Houston got to him for five runs in the first two innings, creating a deficit that the Los Angeles offense couldn't overcome. To Sandoval's credit, he hung around for five frames and allowed only two hits over his final three innings, but the early damage resulted in his third loss of the campaign. This was the second time that the left-hander has allowed five earned runs in a game this season, but he's been good overall with a 3.09 ERA, 1.41 WHIP and 74 strikeouts over 70 innings. His biggest issue has been walks -- his 4.1 BB/9 ranks in the bottom 10 percent among pitchers who have tossed at least 50 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Angels' Patrick Sandoval: Limits damage in no-decision
Sandoval allowed a run on eight hits and two walks with six strikeouts in five innings, taking a no-decision versus the Mariners on Saturday. Sandoval let the second batter of the game, Julio Rodriguez, hit a solo home run, and that accounted for all of the damage on the southpaw's line. The 25-year-old was able to pitch around the other nine baserunners, throwing 62 of 95 pitches for strikes in a solid outing. Sandoval's submitted four straight starts where he's allowed two or fewer runs, lowering his season ERA to 2.63. He's added a 1.37 WHIP and 65:30 K:BB across 65 innings in 12 starts. He's projected for a tougher road start versus the Astros next weekend.... See More ... See Less
