  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Hits walkoff homer vs. ATL

Casas hit a walkoff homer in the bottom of the ninth to give the Red Sox a 9-8 win over Atlanta in Friday's Grapefruit League game. Casas smoked a two-run homer off Joe Harvey to give the Red Sox the victory. The 23-year-old has blasted three homers so far in the Grapefruit League, and he's also hitting .360 to show he's more than just a power threat at the plate. Casas is expected to have an everyday role for Boston, and while there may be some ups and downs in his first full season, he offers significant offensive upside.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Will get starts at leadoff vs. RHP

Casas and Alex Verdugo will be the preferred options in the leadoff spot against right-handed pitching, Red Sox manager Alex Cora told Ian Browne of MLB.com on Friday. Cora will use Enrique Hernandez and Christian Arroyo at leadoff versus left-handers as he mixes and matches at the top of the batting order. Casas would have more pop than most leadoff hitters, but his excellent batting eye makes him a fit. He's reached base at a .400 clip this spring while slugging a couple dingers.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Back in lineup Thursday

Casas (finger) is in the lineup for Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Pirates, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. As expected, Casas will return Thursday after missing a couple days with left fifth finger pain. The swing-and-miss in Casas' game has been prevalent this spring (11 strikeouts in 41 at-bats), but he's done damage when he's put bat to ball with five extra-base hits in exhibition play. The 23-year-old is primed to begin the season as Boston's primary first baseman.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Poised to return Thursday

Casas (finger) is slated to return to the Red Sox' Grapefruit League lineup Thursday versus the Pirates, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Casas had to be scratched from Tuesday's lineup and will remain out Wednesday due to a left pinkie injury he suffered while catching a medicine ball in the weight room, but he'll be back in there Thursday. The young first baseman has clubbed a pair of home runs this spring while putting up a .952 OPS.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Scratched from Tuesday's lineup

Casas was scratched from the Red Sox's Grapefruit League lineup Tuesday due to unspecified reasons, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. It's unclear whether Casas is dealing with an injury, but that should be revealed soon. Daniel Palka took his place in the lineup.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Big night in Florida

Casas went 2-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in Tuesday's spring game against the Marlins. The lefty-hitting Casas did all of his damage against left-handed pitching. The Red Sox's top-ranked prospect, per RotoWire, will be Boston's primary first baseman in 2023 against pitchers of either hand. He may sit against tough lefties, but Casas should get plenty of at-bats and is a potential Rookie of the Year candidate.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Will cede starts to Turner

Casas will share first base with the right-handed hitting Justin Turner, but it will not be a strict platoon, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. "We'll protect Triston from certain lefties. We'll protect him from the workload," Cora said when asked about the job share. Cora also noted last season's ankle injury that forced Casas to miss more than two months of development time as a factor in giving the prospect some days off. Casas would have struggle to mightily -- like Bobby Dalbec did in 2022 -- to be dislodged from the position. Turner hasn't played first base since 2015 and has just 25 starts (14 complete games) worth of experience at the position. Turner's primary role will be the designated hitter.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Won't return to winter ball

Casas' knee injury will prevent him from returning to play for Tigres del Licey in the Dominican winter league, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Casas had only played three games for the Tigres before developing knee soreness in mid-October. The Red Sox are reportedly unconcerned about long-term issues but didn't want him risking anything in winter ball. He was down in the Dominican to make up for lost development time after missing nearly two months with a high ankle sprain. Casas is expected to head into 2023 as the Red Sox's primary first baseman or designated hitter without the benefit of those extra at-batas.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Managing sore knee

Casas is dealing with knee soreness but could be back in the lineup for Tigres del Licey in the Dominican League on Friday. The 22-year-old received an MRI which showed no structural damage, so he may be able to retake the field after a couple days of rest. Casas made his big-league debut for Boston this year and had a .197/.358/.408 slash line with five home runs and 12 RBI in 27 games, and any injury is likely to be treated with caution since he's the organization's top prospect.

Casas went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run, a walk and three runs scored in Tuesday's 13-9 victory over the Orioles. Casas launched a two-run homer off Kyle Bradish in the bottom of the second frame before he walked and came around to score in the following frame. He added two more base knocks while coming around to score again later in the contest. The home run was his fifth of the season and third in his last six games. Over that stretch, Casas has batted .389 with three home runs, six RBI and seven runs. The 22-year-old is now batting .179 with five homers, 10 RBI, 10 runs and a stolen base over his fist 56 career at-bats in 20 games.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Homers in loss

Casas went 1-for-2 with three walks, a home run and three RBI in Saturday's 7-5 loss to the Yankees. Casas hit a two-run homer in the second inning then walked with the bases loaded in the sixth to produce a third run. The rookie has shown good defense at first base, but he hasn't hit much. He had just three hits over the first 38 at-bats (.079) in the majors but has hit safely in the first three games of the series against the Yankees, including two home runs. The Red Sox aren't worried and are confident Casas will hit in the majors.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Blasts third homer

Casas went 1-for-4 with one homer, one RBI and one run scored in Thursday's loss to the Yankees. Casas led off the seventh inning with a homer off righty reliever Clarke Schmidt to get the Red Sox on the board and cut the deficit to two. The 22-year-old rookie has had a particularly difficult time recently as he was 0-for-14 during his last six games prior to this contest. The first baseman now has three extra-base hits in the majors, all of which are home runs.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Not in Tuesday's lineup

Casas is not in the lineup for Tuesday's game against the Reds. Casas has not recorded a hit in 12 at-bats against left-handers at the big-league level, so he will be held out Tuesday with southpaw Nick Lodolo starting for Cincinnati. Yu Chang will man first base in Casas' place.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: On bench Wednesday

Casas isn't starting Wednesday against the Yankees, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Casas started the last two games and went 1-for-6 with a two-run homer, a stolen base, a walk and a strikeout. However, he'll get a breather while Christian Arroyo starts at first base and bats seventh.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Two-run shot in loss

Casas went 1-for-3 with a two-run homer and one steal in Tuesday's 7-6 extra-inning loss to the Yankees. Casas got Boston on the board with a two-run homer to score Rafael Devers in the second inning. Boston would go on to lose the game in extras, but the showing was a good sign for Casas, who was just 2-for-21 in the big leagues entering Tuesday. The home run gives manager Alex Cora good reason to continue to roll with the rookie, as the Red Sox are out of the playoff race.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Not starting Saturday

Casas isn't in the lineup Saturday against the Orioles. Casas started the last five games and went 2-for-18 with a two-run home run, two walks and seven strikeouts. He'll get a day off while Christian Arroyo starts at first base and bats seventh.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Swats first MLB homer

Casas went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Tuesday's 8-4 loss to Tampa Bay. Casas swatted his first of what's expected to be many home runs in the majors. With both Franchy Cordero (ankle) and Eric Hosmer (back) sidelined and unlikely to play again in 2022, the Red Sox will give Casas plenty of at-bats over the final weeks of the season in preparation for what should be a full-time gig in 2023.

  • Red Sox's Triston Casas: Possible waiver wire pickups

An ankle injury cost Casas a big chunk of the season, keeping him from putting up the kind of numbers we were hoping to see at Triple-A Worcester. But a late surge -- namely, a .352 (25 for 71) batting average, three home runs and as many walks as strikeouts (15) over his final 19 games -- preceded his promotion to the big leagues. He was in the lineup Sunday, going 1 for 4, and apparently, that's going to be the norm. "We're going to use him the right way," said manager Alex Cora. "He's going to play almost every day. He did an outstanding job the last few weeks." First base is a deep position, but Casas has been compared to everyone from Cody Bellinger to Freddie Freeman and could make an immediate impact.
